A dance party breaks out.

Someone teaches you the game, then you pass it on.

That’s the mantra for most soccer players, one on display Tuesday afternoon on the Coupeville High School practice field.

The current Wolves, most of them wearing snazzy warm-up jackets, took some time out from their own work to impart some bits of wisdom to a group of future CHS booters.

A couple of years ago, sharpshooters like Kalia Littlejohn and Bree Daigneault were on the receiving end of the lessons. Now they’re the ones helping to shape the young women who may one day succeed them.

It’s the soccer version of the circle of life.

The harder Sage Renninger stares at the computer rankings, the more confused she gets. (Sylvia Hurlburt photo)

Some things can not be explained.

Debbie,” the often-evil computer that ranks high school sports teams for http://www.scoreczar.org/ — a site with a fairly impeccable reputation and an owner with a great sense of humor about my frequent needling — is at it again.

Continuing her love/hate relationship with lil’ ol’ Cow Town, the scariest computer to hit the scene since Hal refused to open the pod bay doors in 2001: A Space Odyssey is just messing with us now.

How else to explain Debbie’s hatred of Coupeville High School football, which she currently ranks behind a team the Wolves just beat, which she mixes with her love of CHS girls’ soccer?

Where to start?

It’s easy to get frustrated at first, when you see the Wolf gridiron warriors, while up four slots from last week, are regarded as just the 48th best team in class 1A.

Which just happens to be a full three slots behind Chimacum, the team they beat 28-26 Friday.

So, the computer thinks the Cowboys would beat the Wolves, except the Wolves have actually proved that wrong … ON THE FIELD.

As you grip your head and rock back and forth, while also noticing that this Friday’s foe, Port Townsend, is now the #1-ranked team, take a deep breath.

And then pop over to the site’s soccer rankings, which will put the skip back in your step and restore your faith in computers (sorta.)

There, Debbie is downright delightful, plopping Coupeville at a strong #18, giving the Wolves, who are 1-2-2, the highest slotting of any 1A school with a losing record.

Deer Park is ranked #1, while Coupeville’s Olympic League rival, Klahowya, must be wondering how a defending state champ who’s gone 5-0 so far can only be ranked #5.

Of course, even the soccer rankings have a quirk, though.

Head down to #30 and there’s Bellevue Christian.

You know, that school that beat Coupeville’s booters 6-0, the only game the Wolves have been manhandled in this season.

And yep, the Vikings are a full 12 slots behind the team they bushwhacked.

Man, I’ll bet they could have some fun discussions with Coupeville’s football team…

Somewhere, Debbie’s circuit board is blushing right now.

Kalia Littlejohn

Kalia Littlejohn (right) netted her team-high fourth goal of the season.

Troy Cowan was a wee bit excited.

Having seen his Coupeville High School girls’ soccer team pull off a 1-1 tie Thursday at Sequim, a 2A school that boasts a student body three times the size of the one his Wolves represent, he let fire.

“Played like a bobcat in a phone booth!!!,” Cowan said. “Intense is the word of the match. The Lady Wolves owned the Sequim whomsoever’s tonight and they ought to be grateful to somebody for the 1-1 tie.

“I had to actually call 911 to have the Sequim Fire Department deploy a fire truck to the field because the Coupeville Lady Wolves were on fire!!!”

The tie left Coupeville at 1-2-2 on the season.

The Wolves are now off for a week, before hosting Orcas Island Sept. 25 in a rare Friday night tilt.

Fueling Cowan’s excitement was an especially strong Wolf defense and the one-two attack of the Littlejohn sisters.

Having matched up sophomore Mia and freshman Kalia (“the Littlejohns were just electric tonight; it was a thing of beauty”), Coupeville saw immediate payback.

Kalia Littlejohn pounded home her team’s goal midway through the second half, scoring on “a wicked left-footed shot that I know the Sequim faithful are still upset about!”

It was her team-high fourth goal of the season, as she has tallied a score in four of her team’s five games.

Setting things up was the play of her veteran sister.

Mia was all about business tonight!,” Cowan said. “Mia was on full attack mode, taking on players, switching fields, passing to teammates, playing defense, total team game … awesome to watch!”

While Sequim managed to eke out an equalizer, the hosts couldn’t get more than that against a stingy Wolf defense.

“My defense was the cream tonight though, they rose up and said NO!!!,” Cowan said.

He praised junior goaltender Lauren Grove (“One of the most intelligent matches I have seen in a long time; she was sensational”) and her defenders.

“For the amount of experience she has, it’s just amazing what Lauren has accomplished,” Cowan said. “She is her hardest critic though; I have nothing but praise and prizes for her and she is upset???

“Relax Lauren, your stock is on the rise, please trust your coach on this one!!!”

Senior captain Jenn Spark “orchestrated another magnificent performance” in leading the defense, while youngsters Lindsey Roberts and Lauren Bayne “played GREAT!”

“I would have to say that match was easily Bayne’s best match of her life!!!,” Cowan said. “She just wasn’t having any of it tonight. I was just so proud of Lauren, she was tough, fast, defensive minded and refused to be beaten.

“I can’t leave out my most diverse player, Mckenzie Meyer!!!,” he added. “Kid can just flat out play ball. Tonight Mckenzie played the top defensive position and it was on lock down!!!

“I mean the store is CLOSED!!! Nuff said, thanks for playing, it’s over!”

The goals dried up in a hurry.

Coming off a game in which it scored eight times, and could have doubled that if it hadn’t spent the final 30 minutes playing keep-away, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad hit a road bump Tuesday.

Facing a tough-nosed Bellevue Christian team, the Wolves fell 6-0 in a non-conference game.

The loss dropped CHS to 1-2-1 on the season, with another non-conference road game just around the corner.

That one is Thursday at 2A Sequim, against a team that has split its first two contests against Coupeville’s fellow 1A Olympic League teams.

Sequim beat Chimacum 2-0, then lost to defending 1A state champ Klahowya 2-0.

Coupeville had racked up 13 goals in its first three games, with freshmen Kalia Littlejohn finding the back of the net in each of the contests, but that run came to an end at the hands of Vikings goalkeepers Emilie Groeschel and Julia Gottlieb.

Bellevue punched home three goals in each half, with Bella Boscolo leading the way with a two-goal night.

Lucy Rash led BC with a pair of assists.

"League? Non-league? Now you're just hurting my brain." (Sylvia Hurlburt photo)

Kalia Littlejohn: “League game? Non-league game? I’ll just score in all of them and you can figure out the rest later.” (Sylvia Hurlburt photo)

Some games matter more than others.

And this is where it’s going to get kind of confusing.

Coupeville High School, which has only three foes in the 1A Olympic League (Port Townsend, Klahowya, Chimacum), has been looking to pad out the schedule for both its girls’ soccer and volleyball squads.

Mission accomplished.

The Wolves have added two more home volleyball matches and one road trip for the booters, bringing those teams totals to 14 (with seven at home) and 15, respectively.

Now we get wacky.

The Wolf spikers have added Chimacum (Oct. 1) and Port Townsend (Oct. 8) while the soccer squad has picked up Port Townsend (Sept. 29), but — now, pay attention — even though those schools are league foes, the matches WON’T count in the league standings.

So, while you certainly want to win, doing so won’t help Coupeville’s chances of earning playoff berths, just as losses wouldn’t derail any hopes.

For both squads only the originally scheduled six matches against those schools (and Klahowya) will matter when figuring out which three teams earn postseason berths in each sport.

So, for volleyball that’s:

10/13 Klahowya
10/15 @ Chimacum
10/20 @ Port Townsend
10/22 Chimacum
10/26 @ Klahowya
10/29 Port Townsend

And the “counters” for soccer:

10/15 @ Chimacum
10/17 Klahowya
10/20 @ Port Townsend
10/22 Chimacum
10/26 @ Klahowya
10/29 Port Townsend

Six league games is the magic number for fall, as Wolf football and boys’ tennis each have that number on their schedule as well, and all of those WILL count in the conference standings.

And, in slightly less confusing scheduling news, the Wolf JV football team has picked up a home game to fill an open slot on Monday, Sept. 21.

The Wolves will now tee it up with 2A Anacortes at 5 PM that night.
