There was a little bit of everything.

Big routs, tense back-and-forth affairs, and a handful of debuts.

When it was all over Wednesday, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team walked away with a 5-0 win over visiting Friday Harbor, and at least a share of a league title.

CHS is 3-0 at the halfway point of this pandemic-shortened season, with all its matches coming against the Wolverines, who rep the only other school in the Northwest 2B/1B League to play tennis.

The two squads face off again March 22, when the Wolves travel to Friday Harbor.

A win there — and Coupeville is 15-0 in varsity matches this season — and you can officially add another league title banner to the collection in the CHS gym.

While Wednesday’s match finished decisively in favor of Coupeville, their arch-rivals put up a spirited fight.

The match of the day came at first singles, with Coupeville ace Abby Mulholland dueling with Friday Harbor’s talented top gun, Allie Fleming.

After a back-and-forth battle, Fleming claimed the first set 6-4, but couldn’t quite hold on to claim the full victory.

Mulholland, utilizing her height advantage, begin to spend more time at the net, dominating by spraying overhead winners to all the nooks and crannies of the court.

Fleming scrambled to the last point, showing a nice touch for keeping rallies going, but was eventually undone by Mulholland, who mixed in some sparkling drop shots as well as she claimed the final sets 6-2 and 6-0.

She wasn’t the only Wolf to bring their A-game, as Jaimee Masters and Emily Fiedler made for a formidable #1 doubles duo.

The two have different playing styles — Fiedler moves like a dancer on the court, while Masters unleashes blistering power off both her serves and her net game — but they mesh together fairly flawlessly.

Wednesday’s match also marked the high school tennis debuts of three younger Wolves, with Helen Strelow, Hayley Thomas, and Nozomi Hagihara taking the court for the first time this season.

All three showed potential, with Strelow a particular standout, teaming with Noelle Daigneault to win at the varsity level.

It’s a strong start.

After a year-plus off because of the pandemic, plus a switch from 1A to 2B and a move to the Northwest League, Coupeville High School athletic teams have come out of the gate hot.

When you look at the three spring sports which tabulate win/loss records, the Wolves have already nabbed seven wins, with runner-ups Friday Harbor (4) and Darrington (3) on their heels.

La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island, and Concrete are all still hunting their first victory.

It’s still early of course, but with COVID shortening each sports season this school year, we’re also already a chunk into the schedule.

After playing entirely at home to start the spring, Coupeville hits the road this coming week.

Baseball plays at Darrington Tuesday and Friday Harbor on Friday, while softball matches those games, then tosses in a trip to Concrete Saturday.

Meanwhile, Wolf girls tennis nabs the only home event of the week, hosting Friday Harbor Wednesday, with CHS track traveling to La Conner Thursday.

Where things stand through March 14:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
Friday Harbor 3-0 3-0
Darrington 1-0 1-0
Coupeville 2-1 2-1
Orcas Island 0-0 0-0
MV Christian 0-2 0-2
La Conner 0-3 0-3

Northwest League girls tennis:

Different island, same result.

Hitting the road for the first time during this pandemic-shortened season, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team swept to a second-straight win Friday afternoon.

Bouncing host Friday Harbor 5-0, the Wolves headed back to the ferry carrying a flawless 2-0 record.

Match three of six against the same foe — Coupeville and Friday Harbor are the only Northwest 2B/1B League schools to play the net game — arrives Wednesday, March 17 back on Whidbey.

Friday’s match featured two new twists from the opener.

Abby Mulholland replaced Noelle Daigneault at second singles, with her teammate sliding over into doubles, where she teamed up with Eryn Wood.

And Wolf sophomore Lucy Tenore made her high school tennis debut, uniting with Sophie Martin for a win.

They were in mid-season form.

Returning to the courts for the first time since 2019, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team demolished visiting Friday Harbor Monday afternoon, and did it in epic fashion.

Not only did the Wolves win the varsity match 5-0, but they outscored the Wolverines 60-7, not allowing the visitors to take more than two games in any set.

Toss in a pair of JV wins and the final margin rolls out to a 76-12 tally.

Barring a major plot twist, it would seem pretty safe to bet on Coupeville winning the Northwest 2B/1B League title this year, as Friday Harbor will be its only foe in a pandemic-shortened six-match season.

While the NWL is currently a seven-team conference, tennis gets the short end of the stick as most league schools don’t offer the sport.

Chimacum, which has played tennis in the past, was originally set to join Coupeville in its new league, but that plan was put on hold for a year by COVID-19.

For now, the Cowboys have partnered with next-door neighbor Port Townsend, and compete as East Jefferson in the 1A/2A Olympic League.

With everything disrupted this school year, Coupeville also can’t play its normal arch-rival, South Whidbey, as the NWL is playing spring sports first, then fall, before closing with winter.

Meanwhile, South Whidbey, as part of the Emerald Sound Conference, is going fall-spring-winter, same as the Olympic League, putting both boys and girls tennis in opposite seasons from the Wolves.

While a six-game schedule against what looks like a pretty overwhelmed Friday Harbor program isn’t perfect, CHS coach Ken Stange pledged to possibly tinker with his lineup going forward to create competitive matches as much as possible.

Monday, the Wolves controlled every bout, and did it with relative ease.

But, as much as they enjoyed the final scores, just getting the chance to compete again, masks and all, was the biggest win.

Noelle Daigneault, possibly the bubbliest of all Wolves, won her varsity singles match, then immediately ambled to a different court and joined tennis newbie Sophie Martin to net a doubles victory.

“I would shake your hand, but I’m not going to,” Daigneault chuckled as she met her opponent at the net, mindful of pandemic protocols.

“But just know, I really do want to!”

On a nearby court, Vivian Farris and Hayley Fiedler, making their CHS tennis debuts, giggled between points, then seemed to surprise themselves a bit by slapping perfectly-placed winners.

And on court #1, Genna Wright, returning to action after a soccer injury, then a pandemic, put a crimp in her junior year, was back to sending screaming forehands past her foe.

Her mask covered most of her face, but around the eyes you could see relief, and happiness.

She was back in action, and everything seemed slightly brighter on an otherwise cloudy day in Cow Town.
