Celebrate Lanie’s lovely life

A celebration of life has been set for Lanie Kiel.

The much-loved Wolf Mom, who treated her daughter’s teammates as additional children of her own, bestowing hugs and non-stop encouragement, passed away in March after a ferocious battle with cancer.

Lanie’s soaring spirit and gentle kindness will be honored in an event set for the Coupeville Rec Hall.

The celebration will run from 4:00-8:00 PM Friday, Aug. 19.

“In true Lanie style we will honor her with a simple gathering with light refreshments, good music, and great people,” said daughter Kacie.

Attendees are asked to wear pink or Hawaiian prints.

Death sparks push for safer highway crossing

Justice for Jake.

That’s what friends and family of Jacob Weigert, a 23-year-old Everett man who died after a pedestrian/vehicle accident Wednesday in Coupeville, are asking the local community to help with.

Weigert was killed after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 20 on foot.

He had come from the Ryan’s House for Youth campus and was going to a bus stop which sits in front of the Island Transit complex.

It’s a fairly short, but often very dangerous trip, crossing a road where the speed limit is 50 MPH and drivers are often picking up speed as they leave Coupeville.

With many of the teens and young adults who are staying at Ryan’s House not having transportation of their own, and Whidbey’s bus system being fare-free, the stop in front of Island Transit is frequently used.

Weigert’s friends and family want Island County to consider placing a sidewalk or crosswalk in the area to make traversing Highway 20 safer and have launched a petition in support of such a move.

A Facebook account for “Justice for Jake” plans to hold a protest in front of the courthouse in Coupeville July 28 at 11 AM.

Pedestrian killed crossing Highway 20

A vehicle/pedestrian accident claimed the life of a young man Wednesday.

A 23-year-old Everett man died Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 20 on foot.

The accident occurred around 9 AM in Coupeville, across from the Ryan’s House for Youth campus.

Jacob Weigert was crossing the road and headed towards a bus stop in front of the Island Transit complex when he was hit by a south-bound Volkswagen Jetta.

The Island County Sheriff’s Department, Central Whidbey Fire, and WhidbeyHealth EMS responded to the accident, with traffic diverted and the highway closed in both directions.

Weigert was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he later died from his injuries.

Huge impact, lasting legacy

Kathleen Anderson’s legacy will live on at her old stomping grounds.

The Coupeville School District is naming its board room in honor of the late school board president, a decision approved at Monday night’s meeting.

Anderson, who died in September 2021, “was a pillar in the local and state education system for over 40 years,” said Coupeville Superintendent Steve King.

She began her life in education as a teacher, before serving twice on the Coupeville School Board.

Anderson’s first run was from 1980-1989, then she returned to serve from 2004 until her passing.

She was also on the State Board of Education for 15 years, while becoming that board’s first female president.

“As a school district and state board member, Director Anderson was known as someone who always prioritized what was best for students,” King said.

He hailed Anderson’s expertise in capital projects and her advocacy for “educating the whole child through career and technical education, athletics and activities.”

Along with her time on various school boards, Anderson also served on state-level committees and was involved in collective bargaining which “improved working conditions for staff.”

Coupeville School Board Director Nancy Conard, who made the motion on Monday’s vote, was a student in Anderson’s first class as a teacher.

The school district plans to purchase a memorial plaque in Anderson’s honor and will hold a celebration at a later date.

Wolf Nation has lost a hoops legend.

Roy Marti, who graduated in 1980 as the #21 scorer in Coupeville High School boys basketball history, still sits at a very-impressive #40 all-time four-plus decades later.

Part of a prominent Wolf athletic family, he passed away Tuesday at age 60 after a battle with ALS.

Marti rang up 551 points across three varsity hoops seasons at CHS, allowing him to edge sister Judy (545) for family honors.

Other high-scoring family hoops stars include Roy’s nephew, JJ (520), and brothers Frank (462) and Chris (319).

Niece Katie Marti is the latest hoops sensation to spring from the family, having made her varsity debut as a freshman during the 2021-2022 season.

Roy tossed in 16 points as a sophomore during the 1977-1978 season, before soaring to a 342-point performance as a junior.

He capped things with another 193 points as a senior.

His obituary, as posted by the family:

Roy John Marti III passed away at home on June 21st, 2022.

He was born April 9th, 1962 to Roy John Marti II and Judith Bernice Roberts in Seattle, Wash.

He was raised in Coupeville, Wash., and graduated from Coupeville High School with the class of 1980.

Roy worked for Sierra Pacific Industries for seven years, retiring in March of 2021.

Roy married the love of his life, Kelly Toomey, on July 7th, 2007 in Humptulips, Wash.

They were married for almost 15 years, but have been together since 1988.

Being a papa was his favorite. He loved being with friends and family.

He enjoyed raising pigs, chickens, and all other animals you can eat.

He loved to farm, hunt, fish, and tend to his garden.

Roy believed in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. With the help of Jesus, Roy was sober for 11 years.

Roy is survived by his wife Kelly; mom Judy; daughters Jessica Curley Marti, Judith Rose Marti, and Dawn Marti; brothers Chris, Rick, Mike, Frank, Bill, Tony, and Jim Marti; sister Rose Tyhuis; and grandchildren Faith Lenormand, Gracie Marti, Kayden Lindgren, Raven Curley, Roy Curley, and Phoenix Curley.
