Sometimes you can learn more from a loss than a win.

Hopefully that’s the case for the next generation of Wolf volleyball stars, who showed promise and flashes of brilliance in an afternoon that ended with a string of losses Thursday.

Playing in Lakewood, all four Coupeville Middle School spiker squads fell, though the eighth grade varsity did pull out a set win.

The scores:

7th grade JV lost 20-17, 20-10

7th grade varsity lost 25-23, 25-13, 15-11

8th grade JV lost 20-9, 20-4

Against all odds, they almost pulled out a win.

Almost.

Despite losing four fumbles, two when they were in scoring position, the Coupeville Middle School football squad came dangerously close to pulling off a comeback win Wednesday in Langley, before falling by three points.

The very-young Wolves kept on coming hard into the final moments.

CMS launched an onside kick with a minute to go, but couldn’t quite come up with the ball for one final drive.

“It looked as though we had it (the ball), but after a little wrestling, we came up short,” said Wolf coach Bob Martin. “A little running, a little passing, it was our game to win, but our errors were the deciding factor.”

Coupeville, which is now 0-3, returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 8 when it travels to Granite Falls.

The next generation of Wolf stars is hard at work.

Coupeville Middle School’s volleyball squads have kicked off action and are getting into the flow of sets, spikes and service aces.

If you want to see players like Lindsey Roberts, Veronica Crownover and Scout Smith before they hit the big gym, head out and catch the young Wolves in action.

Coupeville hosts King’s this Monday, Sept. 29, starting at 3 PM in the CMS gym (across the hallway from the high school gym).

Until then, take a gander at the photos above, captured on film by wanderin’ clicker John Fisken.

“Am I proud? You bet!”

Coupeville Middle School football coach Bob Martin has a very raw team at his command, but, for the second week in a row, the Wolves came dangerously close to an upset win.

An inability to convert PAT’s cost CMS in the end, letting host Port Townsend slip away with a 14-12 win. But, other than the final score, the day was one full of highlights for the Wolf faithful.

“We dominated the first half; the team did good,” Martin said. “We have a very young, very inexperienced team, all of who attend practice six days a week.

“They are progressing, they know their responsibilities and are motivated to excel and are a great group of kids to coach!”

Eighth grader Chris Battaglia carried the load on offense, racking up 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground. He also brought back a punt 30 yards and recovered a fumble on defense.

It was the second straight game he had recorded two touchdowns.

Teo Keilwitz (26 yards) and Sean Toomey-Stout (13) backed up Battaglia, while Wolf quarterback Shane Losey hooked up with Luke Martin for a 15-yard reception.

Battaglia and Jake Pease paced the CMS defense, collecting seven tackles apiece, with Toomey-Stout, Keilwitz and Jaushon Clay each picking up six.

Losey (3), Martin (2), Dawson Sorrows (2), Josh Robinson (2) and Gavin Knoblich (1 assist) all contributed, with Losey tacking on a team-high six assists and Toomey-Stout picking off a Port Townsend pass.
