New coach, same expectations.

Former Oak Harbor High School player Deanna Rafferty has taken the reigns of the CHS softball squad, but she plans to take her team right back to where David and Amy King brought it a season ago.

Then the Wolves broke a 12-year drought, advancing to the state tourney for the first time since 2002.

Now, even having lost six starters, Rafferty sees no reason why Coupeville can’t repeat that trip.

“My goals for the season are a state playoff,” she said. “I know for a fact that this team has the potential for a state playoff and if we accept anything less, we’re underselling ourselves as a team.”

Coupeville lost catcher Breeanna Messner, left fielder Haley Sherman and shortstop Madeline Roberts to graduation.

Toss in three players lost to family moves — Emily Licence (3B), Emily Coulter (2B) and Erin Josue (utility) — and Madeline Strasburg’s (CF) decision to not play her senior season, and the Wolves have holes.

But they do retain two of their top players in senior pitcher/shortstop McKayla Bailey, who is returning from surgery, and big-hitting senior Hailey Hammer, who is moving from first to third.

Three other players who saw considerable playing time last year also return, with senior Monica Vidoni sliding in from right field to man first base.

Sophomores Tiffany Briscoe (OF) and Jae LeVine (2B) are also back.

While the Wolves won’t have a ton of veterans, they do have an especially strong core of young players.

Freshmen Katrina McGranahan (P/IF), Hope Lodell (OF), Lauren Rose (C) and Heather Nastali (OF) and sophomore Robin Cedillo (OF) all played for a Central Whidbey Little League Juniors All-Star softball squad that went 18-2 and advanced to state.

Freshman Kyla Briscoe (P, IF) and sophomore Jasmine Melena (OF) are also in the mix.

It’s a lineup with some pop in its bats.

Bailey and Hammer have power, while the freshmen are fearless and decimated opponents by double digits in nearly all of their summer victories.

“The strengths of the team are our hitting,” Rafferty said. “We have a strong lineup with great power and precision.”

One area of concern is the team’s pitching.

If the flame-throwing Bailey, who threw almost every inning in 2014, is fully recovered from shoulder surgery, Coupeville could be golden.

If she’s not, there’s no veteran star like Maria Rockwell or Alexis Trumbull to share mound time, as in previous seasons.

It would be all freshmen, all the time.

“The main area that any team could always improve on is more pitching,” Rafferty said. “We have one pitcher coming off a previous injury and a freshman (McGranahan) pitcher.

“I think the more pitchers the better, so we are currently working with a new freshman (Kyla Briscoe) on pitching in hopes of creating one other pitching option.”

Having jumped from the 2A/1A Cascade Conference to the 1A Olympic League, swapping out ATM for Chimacum, Port Townsend and Klahowya, the Wolves and their new coach are excited to keep the school’s recent success going.

“I think the new jump is great,” Rafferty said. “We, as a team, get to create a new name for ourselves amongst our new opponents.”

There was a nip in the air, but that didn’t stop them.

The rain stayed away Monday, and, all bundled up, Coupeville High School athletes trundled outside for the start of spring sports.

Bouncing from field to field to capture the moment was roving photo man John Fisken, who provides the pics above capturing the Wolf girls kicking off their softball, tennis and track seasons.

A new season starts in a little over 48 hours.

Coupeville High School athletes will head outside (hopefully not into the rain) Monday to kick off the first day of practice for spring sports.

The new season is the busiest of the three for CHS, with softball, baseball, track, golf, boys soccer and girls tennis vying.

The five Wolf squads (lone Wolf golfer Christine Fields trains and travels with South Whidbey) will be making their debut in the 1A Olympic League.

With fall and winter done, Coupeville has been the second-most successful school in the new league, capturing 23 league wins and a title in girls basketball.

Klahowya, the biggest school (by far) in the new four-team conference, has 30 league wins spread across the six sports (football, volleyball, boys tennis, girls soccer, girls and boys basketball) played so far.

Port Townsend has 15, while Chimacum brings up the rear with 13.

As they head into a new league, the Wolves hope to replicate their success from last spring.

Coupeville sent its baseball and softball teams to state, while Fields, track star Makana Stone and netters Aaron Curtin and Ben Etzell also made the trip to the Big Dance.

It was the first trip to state for a CHS softball squad in 12 years and one of the players who witnessed that never-say-die run up close and personal was Tiffany Briscoe.

As a freshman, she started several games in the outfield for the Wolves and became a more dangerous hitter in the latter stages of the season.

Now, as a sophomore, she will be in a new league, with a new coach, as Deanna Rafferty has replaced David and Amy King, who had to step aside to focus more time on their jobs.

Like her teammates, and fellow athletes in other sports, Briscoe is on the edge of her seat as the hours tick down.

Her thoughts:

“So, I’m super excited for softball to start!

Although all the nerves are starting to kick in with a new coach and all. But so far I’ve heard nothing but great things about her!

This will hopefully be another great season for Coupeville softball.

I’m ready to be back with the team and continue to keep improving our game!”

Madeline Roberts is days away from officially becoming a two-sport college athlete.

The Shoreline Community College freshman, who’s about to wrap up an unexpected basketball season (her first in four years) kicks off her main sport in less than a week.

Roberts is on scholarship as a softball player and she and her Dolphin teammates open play March 4.

The school posted the top photo, showcasing this year’s team, on its Facebook page this afternoon, and we’re passing it on to Wolf Nation.

Mad Dog fever continues to rage across the land.

Nothing is set in stone.

With that said, here’s a peek at what we, kinda, sorta, think might (possibly) be the spring sports schedules for Coupeville High School and its five athletic teams (plus lone Wolf golfer Christine Fields, who practices and travels with South Whidbey.)

And yes, the first day of practice (Monday, March 2) is just five days away, with games set to start about two weeks later, but don’t expect the schedules to be 100% all there.

What we’re currently seeing is 17 games for softball and 19 for baseball, and both squads can go 20 games, so it’s possible deals are still being worked out.

And boys’ soccer? There’s currently a four-week stretch between Mar. 25 and Apr. 23 where the Wolves have exactly ONE GAME scheduled.

As always in recent years, what might seem a misprint is not — CHS track will spend its entire season on the road, as the school’s track oval awaits an upgrade.

So, keeping all of that in mind (and also realizing that spring, with potential rain, is the trickiest of all seasons in which to keep a schedule intact), here’s what we know as of this morning:
