On to the postseason.

With basketball’s regular season all but ending two days ago, this is our final standings story for the winter.

A look below confirms Mount Vernon Christian pulled off the double-win, claiming league titles in both boys’ and girls’ hardwood action.

But now the slate is wiped clean, except for games Monday between Orcas Island and Friday Harbor which were bumped a few days by winter snowstorms.

Other than that, we’re in full-on playoff mode.

Concrete and Darrington, the two 1B schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League, are already actively involved in their district tourney, while the 2B teams get started this coming Thursday, Feb. 13.

Throw the ball skyward and see where it lands, as everyone chases further hoops glory.

Now things get serious.

Next week is a huge one for Coupeville High School basketball teams, as they clash with the only schools ahead of them in the standings.

The Wolves welcome league leader Mount Vernon Christian to Whidbey Tuesday, Jan. 28, before traveling to La Conner three days later.

With only one conference clash left on the schedule after that, next week’s twin bill will have a ton to say on where both Coupeville teams end up in the race for playoff seeding.

As we gaze towards the future, a quick look at where things sit today:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall

A little home cooking, a little far-flung adventure.

Coupeville High School basketball teams have a split schedule in the week ahead, starting at home and finishing on the road.

The Wolves host Concrete Tuesday, with both varsity teams and the girls’ JV suiting up, while the second boys’ squad has the night off.

Then, come Friday, all four CHS squads hit the road for a trip to Orcas Island.

With the regular season entering the stretch run, wins and losses are at a premium for everyone, but especially for varsity teams fighting for playoff positioning.

Where things sit through Jan. 19:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 5-0 7-6
La Conner 4-1 7-8
Coupeville 3-2 4-10
Friday Harbor 2-3 2-11

Back on the bus.

Coupeville High School basketball teams play exclusively off the island during the coming week, with two trips planned.

The Wolf boys head off to Napavine Monday for a varsity-only rumble, before the varsity girls and JV boys join them Friday for a trek to Darrington.

The Loggers don’t have a JV girls’ team, so Coupeville’s second squad of female hoops stars has the week off from game action.

After that, there are five regular season games left on the schedule — three of those at home — with all four Wolf squads slated to see action.

As we move forward, here’s where things sit for varsity teams through Jan. 12:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
La Conner 3-0 6-7
MV Christian 3-0 5-6
Coupeville 2-2 3-9
Concrete 1-2 5-7
Darrington 1-2 6-6
Orcas Island 1-2 3-8
Friday Harbor 0-3 0-11

Northwest League girls’ basketball:

The second stage begins.

Things heat up starting next week, as most of the remaining games on the high school basketball schedule are conference rumbles.

Barring an unlikely reschedule of the non-league tilts with Morton-White Pass which were cancelled by a day-long power outage on Whidbey, the Coupeville girls have eight games left, and all are against Northwest 2B/1B League teams.

Meanwhile, the Wolf boys are set to play eight of nine against conference rivals, with one trip to Napavine nestled amid that run.

First up for both CHS teams is a trip to Friday Harbor this coming Tuesday, followed by home games Friday with La Conner.

As the Wolves prep for the stretch drive, a look at where things sit through Jan. 5:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
La Conner 2-0 5-6
Darrington 1-0 5-4
MV Christian 1-0 3-6
Coupeville 1-1 2-8
Concrete 0-1 4-4
Friday Harbor 0-1 0-9
Orcas Island 0-2 1-7
