Too early to gloat? Never!!

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Which should be for about a hot second.

Two days into a new athletic year, King’s High School, which boasts 50+ state titles in its storied history, sits in dead-last place in both sports in which North Sound Conference teams have started playing.

And yes, we’re talking one whole game in both football and girls soccer, and yes, we’re talking a non-conference game at that, and yes, I’m being kinda snarky and petty.

Welcome back to getting needled on a regular basis, you private school princes and princesses, you.

Anyways, at the moment, both Coupeville and South Whidbey, public schools competing with only athletes who live inside their boundaries, are a flawless 1-0 for the 2018-2019 school year and King’s is 0-2.

Quick, someone get their daddy to go donate some dollars to the athlete recruiting budget, stat!

Heh heh…

With volleyball and tennis getting rolling this coming week, the only sports which have played games that count in the win/loss columns are football and soccer.

King’s, the defending 1A state champs on the pitch, were nipped 1-0 by 3A Lakeside, a team which fell in the state quarterfinals a season ago.

In the world of the gridiron, Coupeville whacked Port Townsend 28-18, South Whidbey slipped past Friday Harbor 20-19, Sultan thrashed Vashon Island 55-0, Cedar Park Christian waxed Chimacum 47-7, Granite Falls was squashed 42-0 by Shorewood and King’s fell flat in a 31-13 loss to Lakewood.

Rain was their only weakness.

Coupeville High School athletics pulled off a flawless week … if you ignore the contests washed away by the elements.

Put the Wolves on the field between Mar. 26-30 and they couldn’t be beat, going 6-0, with victories in all four spring sports which keep track of win-loss records.

Baseball and soccer won twice each, while tennis and softball knocked off their only foes. Making things even better, five of those six wins came against Olympic League foes.

The only thing keeping CHS from achieving pure nirvana was the elements, which washed away, at least temporarily, a softball game against Port Angeles, a tennis match against Olympic and a baseball game against Sultan.

With spring break kicking off, the schedule for the upcoming week is relatively light, with a few non-conference games scattered at the start and end of the week.

Down the stretch run they go!!

One week to seal their fates.

The high school basketball campaign, at least the regular season part, is nearing an end.

Three games in five days next week, and then it’s on to the postseason for some, but not all.

Coupeville’s girls are playoff-bound again, but the final games will tell the tale of whether they enter as a #1, #2 or #3 seed.

A loss Friday to Port Townsend made the run at a fourth-straight league crown exceedingly difficult, but it’s not impossible.

The RedHawks can make things even harder with a win over Chimacum Tuesday, but, if the Cowboys prevail, then things go all kaflooey for another couple of days.

Coupeville has a non-league match-up at Sequim Tuesday, then faces its fate with games at Klahowya Thursday and home against Chimacum Saturday.

If everything comes down to that final day, the Wolves will be sending good thoughts to Amber Bumbalough and the Eagles as they try and knock off Port Townsend in their finale.

However it all works out, the Wolf girls, as we said, are playoff-bound.

The same can’t be said for the CHS boys, unfortunately, as the Wolves were eliminated from playoff contention by a loss Friday at Port Townsend.

While three girls squads punch postseason tickets, only two boys teams get to make the trip this year.

Biggest game of the year?

Biggest game of the year.

Both Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams face a major test next Friday, Jan. 26, with one Wolf team vying for a league title and the other fighting for its playoff life.

With finals going down next week at CHS, the Wolf athletic schedule is light, with just the one game.

After that, both squads cap the regular season the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 3 with three games in six days.

Friday’s bouts are the main attraction, though.

The Coupeville girls, who have overcome injuries and defections, are jelling and have won four of six heading into a home game against Port Townsend where the winner will have sole possession of first-place in the Olympic League.

For the Wolf boys, Friday is a tricky affair, as they both travel to face the RedHawks and have to win to keep their postseason dreams alive.

While girls basketball sends three teams to the playoffs this season, only two boys squads will punch a ticket in 2018.

Now, things get serious!!

The week ahead is the biggest week yet for the Coupeville High School basketball squads.

The Wolf girls play two games, while the boys have three bouts (with one a makeup for a game postponed when the refs failed to show).

All are against Olympic League foes and the results will greatly impact any chance CHS has to add more league titles to the school’s Wall of Fame.

The Wolf girls, three-time defending champs, sit a half-game off of Chimacum and Port Townsend, no matter what the league’s “official” site would like you to believe.

While it waits for OlympicLeague.com to give it proper credit for a win over Klahowya (the Wolves are 2-2 in conference, not 1-2), Coupeville hosts Klahowya Tuesday and travels to Chimacum Friday.

Meanwhile, the Wolf boys, who are a game back of Port Townsend, have trips to Klahowya Tuesday and Saturday, packaged around a home game Friday against Chimacum.

That night marks the 101st anniversary of CHS boys basketball.

By the time the week is done, both Wolf squads will have six of their nine league games in the books (will OlympicLeague.com keep up???), with just a single game against each of their three conference rivals left.

As both teams head down the stretch, the scoring races are heating up, as well.

On the girls side of the ball, Mikayla Elfrank’s ankle injury, which has sidelined her for several games, has allowed Lindsey Roberts to storm past her and claim the #1 spot on the points chart.

With the guys, no one is likely to catch Hunter Smith, who is more than 100 points ahead of Coupeville’s second-leading scorer as he rises up the school’s career scoring list.

Smith, who is averaging 19.1 a night this season, sits #17 all-time, one decent game from cracking the Top 15.
