track

The view from what is, for one more season at least, the visitors side of the field.

oval

Headed down the home stretch.

Saturday night it becomes a reality.

When football fans flood into Mickey Clark Field for Coupeville’s season opener against arch-rival South Whidbey, they will also get to take in the sparkling new track which sprung up this summer.

Until then, wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken offers you these unique views of the new oval (and the freshly-painted gridiron).

How did he get them? He’ll never tell, so you probably shouldn’t ask.

Just say thank you and move on.

Parker

Imparting joy to the universe (and volleyball teammate Kayla Rose).

Joy, above all.

Abby Parker is the real deal — a smart, strong young woman already super successful at 17, and headed to unimaginable achievements.

But the first thing you notice about the Coupeville High School junior, before you see her determination, her commitment, her grit, her spine of steel, is how she interacts with others.

With her teammates, her friends, her family or with random people she passes while she’s busy doing the million-and-a-half things she seems to accomplish every day.

And what you see, every time, is the joy she brings to this world, and others in it.

It’s not just mere happiness, though she pretty much always seems happy, but something far deeper.

Abby seems to approach every challenge, every obstacle, with a can-do attitude, and the joy she exhibits is truly infectious.

Running, which seems to have become her sport of choice (she’s also skilled in volleyball, basketball and probably any activity you might pick), is not for the faint of heart.

It can rip your body up, tear away at your legs, your muscles, your psyche.

It can deliver huge highs and huge lows, and it takes a special kind of person to embrace it the way Parker does.

Look at the photos of her in action during track season or at one of the many real-world running events she haunts on a regular basis, and you’ll see both sides.

I’ve seen photos of Abby leaving her soul on the oval, trying to trim one more second, lean just a bit harder, reach for a PR at any cost.

In those photos, her face shows the strain, but also (and this is bigger) her willpower. She does not back down, ever.

In other photos, you see the joy she gets from competing, whether she’s flying down a track or splashing through bubbles or clouds of paint.

And we’re right back to joy, which is never far away when Parker is nearby.

As she celebrates her birthday today and prepares to head into another school year, let’s wish her all the best.

Because that’s what she is — one of the best.

Abby, you are a sparkling ray of sunshine, and Coupeville would not be the same without you.

Happy birthday, Miss Parker, and may you always get back just as much joy as you give to the world.

oval

They said “let there be lane numbers” and it came to pass.

numbers

Lookin’ snappy.

Now it’s getting real.

Another day, another step closer to being finished for Coupeville High School’s snazzy new, levy-funded, track oval.

Lines went down, lanes went up, and now … lane numbers and other assorted markings.

Next thing you know, CHS will be hosting its first home track meet since 2008.

My, oh my.

Choose your lane!!

lanes

Lines upon lines, all leading to a bright future for CHS track.

For the first time in 35 years, there are new lanes on the Coupeville High School track oval.

Of course, it helps that the oval itself is brand spanking new as well, as the levy approved by local voters continues to pay off with upgraded facilities.

While the track itself has been in place for a week or two now, Friday was L-Day, as lines were officially painted, taking the whole thing to another level of reality.

Still ahead is obtaining all the moving parts (hurdles, pole vault pit equipment, electronic timing devices, etc.) needed for CHS to start hosting track meets again.

As the old six-lane track deteriorated, the school lost the ability to host meets around 2008.

The plan is to take full advantage of the gorgeous new eight-lane track, as school officials want Coupeville to be a destination for teams.

Along with holding regular home track meets, CHS wants to host postseason events such as the district meet, which would bring in multiple teams and a new level of excitement.

Know your foe and respect him, too.

When Coupeville High School opens a new football season Sept. 3, one of the players they’ll need to keep an eye on is Chase Barthlett.

The South Whidbey three-sport star is a rampaging force for the Falcons from his center and defensive end positions, and one intent on helping the forces of Langley retain possession of The Bucket.

While those of us in Coupeville obviously hope he goes home disappointed after the Island rivalry game, we can’t help but take a moment to give him props for all he’s accomplished.

Barthlett, who wants to be an All-State lineman during his final prep season, has his eyes set firmly on an extended gridiron career.

“After high school I want to play college football and then after go on to the NFL,” he said. “Of course, this isn’t a sure thing, so, if not that, then I would love to have a job in the graphic design field of work.”

On the field, Barthlett leads by example, never flinching from battle.

“My best strengths are the physical contact, cause you get to really see the fight or flight instinct in action,” he said.

Barthlett brings the same attitude to his other sports, wrestling and track.

On the mat, he’s a state meet veteran who went to Australia this summer to compete in an international tourney. While there he finished second in his weight class and his team finished third.

When spring rolls around, Barthlett runs the 4 x 100 while spending the majority of his time as a thrower, competing in the shot put, discus and javelin.

He’s been to bi-districts twice in the shot put, finishing fifth as both a sophomore and junior.

A big fan of the Will Ferrell film Step Brothers and hip-hop music, Barthlett gravitates to history class when in school.

“My favorite class has always been history,” he said. “Because you can compare so much of it to present times.”

Family and friends help keep him centered, both in sports and in everyday life.

“The people who have made an impact on me the most have been my parents and my friends,” Barthlett said. “Especially my two best friends, who graduated last year; they really brought me up and showed me how to lead.”

As he looks forward to kicking off his senior year, the Falcon senior doesn’t badmouth his team’s closest rival, instead choosing to focus on the positives he sees in his own program.

“Well, every football team has their own little things that makes them better,” Barthlett said. “But one thing that I’ve only seen at my school is even when we are down and out I’ve never seen one guy quit.

“Especially last year, when it was so easy to quit, every single one of us went back out and fought,” he added. “This year we are stronger and faster and we are ready for this year.”
