Fly fast, soar high

Every second counts, every inch matters.

As we wind our way towards May, the number of regular season track and field meets dwindle, with the onset of the postseason just on the horizon.

Taking our weekly look at how Coupeville High School athletes stack up against other 2B stars, we have movement from last Monday.

A scan of the top 10 marks in each event show the Wolves going upwards four times, with sophomore Katie Marti jumping back into the elite in the javelin.

Aidan Wilson (400) and both 4 x 400 relay squads are also trending up after strong showings at the GearUp Eason Invitational, while CHS remains in the top 10 in 13 of the other 15 events it previously occupied.

And for those two guys (briefly) bumped from the list by newcomers — Nick Guay in the 200 and Tate Wyman in the 300 hurdles?

Both remain in the top 10 in other events, plus have a chance to compete again Saturday, April 29, when the Wolves attend the Sunny and 70’s Invitational in Lakewood.

Scrappy Wolves vie at 91-team meet

Welcome to the BIG time.

The 33rd annual GearUp Eason Invitational drew track and field athletes to Snohomish Saturday from 91 different schools, encompassing two states and two countries.

Washington state teams were joined by squads from Oregon — including a 6A school — and British Columbia, with Coupeville High School the only “B” school in attendance.

And while the Wolves didn’t pull off any wins, they did get a Top 10 performance in the shot put from senior Carolyn Lhamon, who was 9th in a field of 40 throwers.

While the competition was extreme, CHS coaches and athletes came away pleased with their effort.

“A little rain, less sun, lots of clouds and some beautiful PR’s!!!!,” said Wolf track guru Elizabeth Bitting. “Long day and a successful one!

“They all did amazing! Especially those 4 x 400 relay teams,” she added. “Three of the four girls and two of the boys attended JUST for that race AND they were the very last events.

“Such a long day for them! Super proud that both teams PR’d!”

Even qualifying for the meet was super-intensive, with only the best of the best making the cut.

Having Aidan Wilson get the invite in four events, while fellow senior Tate Wyman made it in three warms Bitting’s heart.

“That’s impressive,” she said. “We might be small, but we are mighty!”

Coupeville returns to action next Saturday, April 29 with an appearance at the Sunny & 70’s Invitational at Lakewood High School.

That’s the final regular season meet before the Wolves begin their long postseason run.

Martin makes next-level throws

Logan Martin was in a groove.

Competing in the Wildcat Open in Ellensburg Saturday, the Central Washington University freshman defended his home turf in style.

Martin, a 2022 Coupeville grad, claimed 6th place in the hammer throw and 9th in the discus, while competing in fields of 17 throwers.

The former Wolf nailed a PR in the hammer, letting it rip 167 feet, nine inches, while just missing a PR in the discus, where his implement returned to Earth at the 137-05 mark.

During his time at CHS, Dalton Martin’s younger brother played basketball, soccer, and tennis, as well as bringing home three 2nd place medals from the state track and field championships.

Former Wolf ace soars skyward

If she was still in Coupeville, she’d be two inches off the school record.

Of course, Savina Wells, onetime Wolf supernova, now lives in Florida, where she’s a sophomore at Fernandina Beach High School.

So, while her current accomplishments have no impact on the CHS track and field record board, her high-flying exploits still reverberate with her Whidbey fan club.

Wells cleared the high jump bar at an even five feet Thursday, tying her PR, to win a title at the district meet, and advance to regionals.

The CHS all-time mark for girls, set by Yashmeen Knox in 1999, is 5-02.

Wells has also vied in the long jump and 100 in her first season at Fernandina Beach, after delivering strong volleyball and basketball campaigns.

While growing up in Coupeville, Savina, younger sister of fellow Wolf stars Ulrik and Izzy Wells, was a marquee player in multiple sports.

Volleyball, basketball, softball, track and field, and doing cartwheels across the little league fields at Rhododendron Park — she was the undisputed queen.

And might have been referred to as “The Chosen One” in stories written at 2:00 AM by overly excitable bloggers.

Or at least that’s the rumor.

Their track, their spotlight

It was a clean sweep. Sort of.

The Coupeville High School track and field team won every event at a home meet Wednesday, though that came with a wrinkle.

The Coupeville Classic Invitational was a late addition to the calendar, created to give Wolf coaches a chance to honor their 26 seniors.

It was also an opportunity to get all their athletes back in action after a 10-day break between meets, even if the Wolves were the only team on the oval.

And finally, the event gave CHS coaches and helpers a chance to work out the kinks prior to hosting multiple teams during the district meet in May.

Competing against their teammates under sunny skies, the Wolves seized the opportunity, combining to post 69 PR’s.

That included the team’s first foray into the world of pole vaulting this season.

Carly Burt, Cael Wilson, and Adrian Cunningham made their debuts in the event, with school record holder Jordan Ford helping coach.

“Old school” pole vaulter Jordan Ford imparts wisdom to a new generation.

Coupeville returns to action this Saturday, traveling to Snohomish for the GearUp Eason Invitational.

That meet currently lists 92 schools planning to attend, drawing teams from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia.
