Ward soars in state meet debut

Welcome to the big time, Matthew Ward.

The Coupeville High School senior made his debut Thursday at the 2B state track and field championships in Yakima and had an immediate impact.

Shattering his PR in the triple jump by a foot-and-a-half, Ward earned 5th place in his final run in the red and black.

He becomes the 91st CHS athlete to bring a medal home in the modern era of state track meets, which runs from 1963-2025.

Ward was a solid jumper all year, with his previous best being 40 feet, two inches at the district meet, but he saved his best (41-07.50) for the final weekend of the season.

The four points he earned for his performance has Coupeville sitting in 8th place in the 2B boys team standings after day one.

Ward was one of five Wolves to compete Thursday as the three-day meet kicked off with a handful of events.

Lyla Stuurmans, Malachi Somes, and Carson Field ran in the 1600 finals, while Chase Anderson vied in the prelims for the 100, but failed to advance to Saturday’s eight-man finale.

Coupeville has a busy schedule Friday as the state meet runs all day.

The Wolves are slated to compete in nine events, including finals in the girl’s discus, as well as the boys high jump, pole vault, and long jump.

Track stars launch Eastern journey

The final trek begins.

Dodging late May raindrops in Cow Town Thursday, Coupeville High School track and field athletes hit the road and headed off to the heat of Yakima.

Awaiting the Wolves is the three-day 2B state championships at Zaepfel Stadium and a chance to join the exclusive list of CHS stars to bring home medals from the year’s biggest meet.

Time to show up and show out.

But first, time to marinate in the moment in front of local fans before being swept away by the sound of the wheels on the bus going round and round.

They’re coming down to the wire.

The state track and field championships play out in Yakima this Thursday-Saturday, with 13 Wolves having qualified to compete in the season’s biggest showdown.

With all the various district, and bi-district, and quad-district lead-ins now finished, CHS athletes can measure themselves against the best of the best in their events and classification.

“It was great to see so many smiles”

“I can’t believe this was the last regular season meet. It feels like we just started this adventure!”

Coupeville Middle School track and field coach Jon Gabelein may be feeling like spring is flying by, but his Wolves continue to take advantage of their time in the spotlight.

Competing Wednesday at a three-team meet in Langley, CMS capped the regular season with 16 wins, a zillion PRs, and some history.

Squaring off with King’s and host South Whidbey, the Wolves won the boys 6th/7th grade team title, while earning second in the other three team tussles.

The history came courtesy 8th grader Tamsin Ward and 7th grader Diesel Eck.

Eck picked up three wins Wednesday, capturing shot put and discus titles while also running a leg on a triumphant relay squad.

That gives him 12 victories on the season, tying him with then-8th grader Alex Murdy (2019) for the most by a CMS boy in the modern era.

Ward went one better in Langley, sweeping to wins in the 100, 200, shot put, and high jump, which puts her at 14-0 heading into the Cascade League Championships June 2.

That’s second-best in CMS track history, trailing just Lindsey Roberts, who won 19 times as an 8th grader in 2015.

Ward has 37 wins across the past three seasons, most career victories by a Coupeville Middle School student.

Across the board, Coupeville athletes seized the opportunity to shine Wednesday, with many of them picking up new events as the season winds down.

“Embracing that new event PR rush!” said CMS coach Kelly Powers.

“You never know what event will resonate with you until you try it in competition and even though one Wolf remarked ‘I’ll never do THAT again!’ it’s great they’re trying things on to see what fits!

“And who knows, sometimes we come back to what challenges us … at least I hope so!

“It was great to see so many smiles and athletes that don’t take themselves so seriously they can’t have some fun!”

Track stars among state’s best

They’re moving back up the charts.

After a strong team-wide performance Saturday at the District 1 Track and Field Championships, Coupeville High School athletes have increased their presence among the state’s best.

The Wolves will send 13 on to the state meet in two weeks, and a look at the top 10 performance list for 2B athletes contains more CHS names than it did a week ago.

Based on their work at districts, senior Carson Field (3200), freshman Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), and the boys 4 x 400 relay team now appear among the best of the best.

With just 12 days left in the season, where Coupeville athletes show up through May 19 on the statewide list for top 2B performances:
