CMS revs up for fall sports

It’s their time to shine.

With high school sports underway in Coupeville, the older Wolves will soon be joined by their middle school compatriots, who kick off fall sports action starting this weekend.

CMS features cross country and volleyball, with students in grades 6-8 eligible to participate.

The middle school football program was shut down several years back, but 8th graders can play up with the high school soccer teams, and a fair amount of booters have accepted the challenge this fall.

“Lots of winning and lots of learning!”

Long day, big benefits.

After traveling to Yakima for the SunDome Volleyball Festival, the Coupeville High School varsity spikers sizzled in the spotlight Friday.

The young Wolves won all three of their matches in pool play, before putting together a valiant effort against two top-flight programs in bracket action.

First-year CHS head coach Scout Smith came away from the trip pleased with how her players handled life on the same courts where the state tourney is held each year.

“A really good experience for a young team,” she said. “They showed some really great fight and determination.

“Lots of winning and lots of learning,” Smith added. “The coaching staff really liked some of the things we saw and were excited to learn areas we can continue to improve.”

Coupeville opened play by bouncing Granger (25-19, 25-19), Inchelium (25-13, 25-5), and West Valley (26-24, 22-25), advancing to the top bracket in the prestigious tourney.

The Wolves fell 25-10, 25-14 to Cashmere, and 25-15, 25-19 to Northwest Christian in a preview of the kind of teams they would square off with if they earn a trip to the big dance in November.

For now, CHS returns to match play Tuesday, Sept. 16, when it travels to Friday Harbor for the Northwest 2B/1B League opener.

Wolf spike crews tangle with pesky Pioneers

“They scrambled well and served tough.”

Both of Coupeville High School’s volleyball teams put up strong efforts on their home floor Tuesday, impressing varsity coach Scout Smith, but it wasn’t quite enough to knock off one of the toughest rivals in the region.

Nooksack Valley, a powerhouse across the board in girls sports, emerged with a pair of non-conference victories, dropping both Wolf squads to 1-1 on the young season.

The Wolf JV opened the night with a bang, taking the first set of its match by a 25-23 margin.

After that, however, the visiting Pioneers evened things by taking the second frame 26-24, before sealing the win with a 15-7 run in the third.

At the varsity level, a rebuilding Coupeville contingent got stronger as the match played out, but ultimately fell 25-12, 25-16, 25-18.

Both CHS teams have some time to work on fine-tuning things, returning to the court Tuesday, Sept. 16, when the Wolves travel to Friday Harbor for their Northwest 2B/1B League opener.

Sweet sweep for JV spike crew

One match in and everything’s clicking.

Getting contributions from all 10 girls in uniform Friday night, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad rolled to a straight-sets win over visiting South Whidbey in the season opener.

Bouncing the Falcons 25-22, 25-18, the young Wolves made a winner of new coach Tianna Carlson in her debut on the CHS bench.

The new spike guru replaces Ashley Menges, who moved to Florida after five highly-successful seasons as JV coach.

Carlson got a strong effort across the board from her players Friday, with the Wolves combining for 12 kills, 35 digs, nine assists, and seven aces.

Along with the eight CHS players who scratched their names in the scorebook were Emma Leavitt and KeeAyra Brown, who rounded out a potent attack.

New-look Wolves spike Falcons

It may be a new era, but winning is still very much in fashion.

After a decade of success under Cory Whitmore, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball program kicked off the Scout Smith dynasty in style.

Drilling visiting South Whidbey 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16 Friday in their season opener, the new-look Wolves staked their claim to Island dominance and continued success.

Coupeville’s spikers are coming off the most-successful campaign in their history, earning 4th place at last year’s 2B state tourney.

But much has changed since that team departed the Yakima SunDome with the program’s first-ever trophy.

Seven seniors graduated after carrying an undefeated record into the final day of the season, while Whitmore stepped away after compiling a 106-45 record and three trips to state in nine years.

Taking his spot on the Wolf bench is Smith, a standout setter during her playing days at CHS.

Friday’s rivalry win in her debut as varsity head coach capped a busy, but successful series of days for the ever-talented one, as she also completed her first week as a 3rd grade teacher at Coupeville Elementary.

Guided by Smith, and sparked by the play of the team’s two returning state meet vets — senior Teagan Calkins and sophomore Tenley Stuurmans — the Wolves piled up 37 kills, 30 digs, 31 assists, and 13 service aces against South Whidbey.

Whitmore and recent Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame inductee Taylor Brotemarkle were in the stands Friday to provide moral support for their successors, who return to match action next Tuesday, Sept. 9.

The Wolves play host to another non-conference foe, Nooksack Valley, that night, with JV tipping at 5:00 PM and varsity at 6:30.
