Ace-ace-ace, in your face-face-face

Right back in stride.

Bouncing back from a rare loss, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad drilled visiting Darrington Thursday night.

Rolling to a 25-12, 25-19, 15-6 victory, the Wolves improve to 7-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 11-2 overall.

Coupeville’s young guns have one match left on the schedule, and it’s a doozy, as they host conference heavyweight La Conner Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Wolves prepped for their furious finale by methodically swatting Darrington.

CHS actually trailed in all three sets for a hot moment, then found a different gear and seized control for good.

They key to the opening set was the serving of Taylor Brotemarkle, as the Wolf sophomore ripped off an 11-point run at the line to break open a 4-4 tie.

Mixing nasty aces with slightly softer serves, which the Loggers still couldn’t get back over the net, she was a lethal markswoman with a license to kill.

One of the few times Darrington staged a brief bit of resistance during Brotemarkle’s run of terror, teammate Jada Heaton soared at the net to smash a spike winner which tore off the arm of a Logger defender.

Toss in some nice work from fab frosh Teagan Calkins, both at the service line and rampaging around, dispensing spikes, and the Wolves were clicking.

Things took a brief detour into more dangerous territory in the second set, as Darrington led for a considerable amount of time.

Coupeville got big plays from folks like Aby Wood, who pumped up the Wolf faithful with a thunderous block, but the visitors proved to be resilient.

The Loggers staked themselves to a 17-12 advantage, before Coupeville — having received some slightly stern words of wisdom from coach Ashley Menges — regained its mojo.

CHS fought back to knot things at 18-18, before Katie Marti put things on ice with an extended run at the service stripe.

The ever excitable one popped an ace off a rival’s shoulder, while also slamming a serve which tore off the last flake of paint on the back line as it skipped away.

While the third set was for practice, Marti and Issabel Johnson took things deadly serious, peppering the Loggers with a string of aces to close out the night.

Big numbers, big success

“It’s a new stat story!”

The numbers continue to soar.

There have been 12 Coupeville High School varsity volleyball matches played this season, with 12 Wolves seeing floor time for Cory Whitmore’s squad.

From fresh-faced newcomers to well-seasoned veterans, the CHS spikers have combined to post an 8-4 mark so far, thanks in large part to their willingness to share the workload on both offense and defense.

When all is said and done however, everyone always like to take a gander at their own personal stat line to see where they rank.

So, with numbers compiled from CHS coaches, a look at individual season stats through Oct. 19:

Wolves, Braves rumble on hardwood

One point.

That was all that separated La Conner and Coupeville Tuesday night, as their JV volleyball teams waged an epic battle.

In the end, the host Braves pulled out a 25-23, 22-25, 15-13 win, keeping alive their streak of dominance.

But don’t overlook the Wolves, who are getting closer and closer to knocking the league powerhouse off its throne.

Now 6-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 10-2 overall, Coupeville’s JV has forced La Conner to a hotly contested third set the last two times the schools have met.

Tuesday’s match was ultimately a one-point affair, with La Conner holding a 62-61 edge, and upset rumblings are getting louder and louder.

Next up is a rematch in Coupeville Oct. 25, and Wolf fans will want to show up early that night.

Reflecting on Tuesday’s loss, CHS coach Ashley Menges can see where her team had La Conner’s number, and where the Wolves let the Braves slip away.

“It was a night full of ups and downs,” she said. “At some points, we were really on, and other points, we were very off.

“The first set started with a lot of point breaks going our way, and they started off with great energy and execution, but once it came down to crunch time, we let one point lost equal three points lost.”

Coupeville rebounded, however, getting stronger as the match unfolded.

“The girls recovered late in the second, playing catch up,” Menges said. “But you could tell they wanted it.

“Third set, it came down to who made less errors, and who recovered better, and we were right there. Luckily, we get redemption #2 next week.”

Spikers still seek that perfect night

Swing for the big dogs, you need to bring your best.

And while the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball spikers played with passion and grit Tuesday, they weren’t able to generate the kind of tsunami needed to swamp three-time defending state champ La Conner.

The Wolves entered the night a half-game up on the Braves in the standings, and exited a half-game behind after falling 25-11, 25-14, 25-11.

The road loss drops Coupeville to 6-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 8-4 overall, while La Conner climbs to 6-0, 10-1.

Both teams have two league matches left on the schedule.

The Wolves host Darrington Oct. 20, while the Braves welcome Friday Harbor to their gym the same night.

Coupeville and La Conner then face off a second time Oct. 25 on Whidbey, with the district playoffs set to go down Nov. 2.

In the three years since they rejoined the NWL, the Wolves have only lost to one conference rival in volleyball, and that would be the hard-hitting, smooth-playing, success-craving Braves.

The mission is still the same for Coupeville — upend the Evil Empire. To do so, everything will have to be clicking.

“We definitely needed to have a sharper game in order to stay up with La Conner,” said CHS coach Cory Whitmore.

“There were times we executed our game plan well and it resulted in defensive stops and/or points for us,” he added.

“But next time we see them we will need to create more chaos and put fire on our attack.”

CMS spikers shine brightly

“This is the best game by far this season.”

Coupeville Middle School volleyball guru Cris Matochi was a happy guy as he, fellow coach Raven Vick, and their Coupeville Middle School spikers headed back from Everett Monday evening.

The Wolves had faced down private school power Northshore Christian Academy, coming away with an exciting win, a productive loss, and a lot of lessons learned.

Almost exactly the way Matochi and Vick planned it.

How the day played out:

 

Varsity:

“We decided when we stepped into the gym that we were leaving with a win, and the kids took the memo,” Matochi said.

Coupeville, getting contributions from everyone on the floor, swept NCA 25-18, 25-19, 15-8, raising its record to 3-2 on the season.

The Wolves used a very strong service attack to push the pace of the day, with Tenley Stuurmans being particularly effective.

The CMS 7th grader opened the first set with a six-point run, before going nuclear with a 15-point, 14-ace performance in set #2.

Stuurmans wasn’t the only Wolf firing on all cylinders, as Adeline Maynes fought through a migraine “to have a stellar performance, with great sets and strong passing.”

Matochi doled out praise across the board.

“Lexis (Drake) passed and served really well, while Haylee (Armstrong) had incredible passes and hits,” he said.

“Capri (Anter) had strong hits and good communication,” Matochi added. “This was the best we’ve seen Rylin (Price) play, and Capri and Addy had great coordination.”

 

JV:

The Wolf young guns fell 25-10, 25-18, 15-9, but had “by far the best ball control of the season,” according to Raven Vick.

“The volume of game was the best we’ve seen,” she added. “They did really well getting the first ball up and working to get all three touches.

“We struggled with serving but saw great improvement from all of the players.”

Vick noted 6th grader KeeAyra Brown was “a strong consistent player for us,” while Isabella Bowder and Myra McDonald also played well under pressure.

Coupeville’s energy goes through the roof when Olivia Martin is involved — “she’s a firecracker on and off the court” — with Alexis Hewitt, Willow Leedy-Bonifas, and Cheyanne Atteberry all playing strongly.

“It’s great to see Alexis improving on her serve and getting more playing time in that way,” Vick said.

“Overall, Willow was really consistent all around but specially with serves. Cheyanne is continually working hard and getting more and more serves in the court.

“I am extremely impressed with the playing ability and resilience they had.”
