Fly high, fly far

Another day, another milestone.

Coupeville grad Logan Martin nailed a PR in the hammer throw Saturday at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational in Bellingham.

Now a freshman at Central Washington University, the throwing ace finished 3rd out of 16 competitors, launching the implement 178 feet, seven inches.

Martin also came back around to claim 7th in the discus (out of 21 dudes), with his throw slamming back to Earth at the 136-11 mark.

Overall, he picked up eight points for the Wildcats.

During his time at CHS, Martin played soccer, tennis, and basketball in addition to earning three state meet medals for the track and field team.

He was a key part of a senior class which led the Wolf boys’ basketball team to an undefeated 16-0 regular season, league title, district title, and trip to the state tourney in 2022.

Martin makes next-level throws

Logan Martin

Logan Martin was in a groove.

Competing in the Wildcat Open in Ellensburg Saturday, the Central Washington University freshman defended his home turf in style.

Martin, a 2022 Coupeville grad, claimed 6th place in the hammer throw and 9th in the discus, while competing in fields of 17 throwers.

The former Wolf nailed a PR in the hammer, letting it rip 167 feet, nine inches, while just missing a PR in the discus, where his implement returned to Earth at the 137-05 mark.

During his time at CHS, Dalton Martin’s younger brother played basketball, soccer, and tennis, as well as bringing home three 2nd place medals from the state track and field championships.

Logan Martin lets it fly

It was a long, successful day.

Coupeville grad Logan Martin, now a freshman at Central Washington University, launched big throws in two events Saturday in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Competing in the Pacific Open, Martin finished 5th in the hammer throw — out of 30 competitors — and 7th of 28 in the discus.

The former Wolf chucked the discus 140 feet, seven inches, and lobbed the hammer 155 feet.

Both events were well spaced out, with the hammer throw starting at 9 AM, while the discus didn’t get underway until 6 PM.

For dad Bob Martin, who coached Coupeville High School’s track team in Bellingham Friday, then hightailed it to Oregon to watch his progeny in action, the epic time span made one thing clear.

Prep meets may go on for a while, but this was something completely different.

“I’ll never complain about our high school meets again,” the track guru said with a laugh.

Sandahl sisters queens of the waterway

The sisters rule the water.

Coupeville’s Sophie and Lucy Sandahl helped the Seattle Pacific University women’s rowing team thrash arch-rival Western Washington University at the Falcon Regatta Saturday morning.

The duo played major roles for the SPU varsity 4+ boat, which won its two races by almost a full five and seven seconds, respectively.

Overall, Seattle Pacific swept to victory in all six races contested on the L.W. Ship Canal course.

During the varsity 4+ races, Sophie, who celebrated Senior Night festivities this week, was in the #3 seat, while her lil’ sis dictated the pace of the attack from her coxswain position.

SPU, which is highly-rated this season, returns to action Apr. 15-16, when the squad travels to Cherry Hills, New Jersey for the Knecht Cup.

The Sandahls, who were sports and academic standouts as high schoolers, both attended Coupeville schools after the family moved to Whidbey from South Carolina.

Lucy graduated from CHS after playing volleyball and track for the Wolves, while Sophie went up north and finished at my alma mater, Oak Harbor High School, where she competed with the Wildcat swim team.

Coupeville college stars shine brightly

All across the USA, former Wolves were on the prowl Saturday.

Whether it was track and field, rowing, or baseball, Coupeville grads were knee deep in college sports.

A look at CHS alumni in action:

Ja’Tarya Hoskins:

The former Wolf cheerleader and track star ran in the 200 at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma, hitting the tape in 30.52 seconds.

Hoskins is a redshirt sophomore at Saint Martin’s University and on target to graduate this spring.

Joey Lippo:

The former Wolf three-sport star racked up three hits, three walks, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base while playing a pair of baseball doubleheaders in Boston this weekend.

A junior at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Lippo continues to be one of the true bright spots for an Owls team struggling to find a winning groove.

On the season, he’s hitting .283 with 14 hits, including a triple and a home run.

Lippo has scored eight times, while picking up six RBI and walking six times.

Logan Martin:

The Central Washington University freshman was also at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational, where he claimed 2nd place in the discus.

Besting 14 of 15 rivals, Martin heaved the throwing implement 128 feet, nine inches.

Lucy and Sophie Sandahl:

The sister combo was on the waters at the Husky Open Saturday, competing for Seattle Pacific University in women’s rowing.

Lucy was the coxswain for a pair of varsity 4+ boats which finished second to powerful Cal Poly in four-team fields, while Sophie manned an oar as the Falcons varsity 8+ crew zipped along.

The Sandahl sisters return to action Apr. 1, when SPU hosts the Falcon Regatta.
