Since I don’t have a ton of dress-related photos, a fresh pic of CHS spikers (l to r) Emma Smith, Payton Aparicio, Lauren Rose and Ally Roberts, who have all been known to wear dresses from time to time. (John Fisken photo)

Dress fever grips the nation.

We sit two weeks out from ye olde annual Coupeville High School Homecoming dance and the race is on to obtain garments for said night.

Enter the queen of the haberdashery, the titan of teal, the Tim Gunn of Cow Town, Amy Briscoe.

The mom of CHS spikers Tiffany and Kyla Briscoe, who also doubles as a reasonably-priced dress merchant in her work with My Fairy Godmother, is back at it.

Briscoe (and her 2,709 dresses) will be camped out in the school’s commons area Sept. 30-Oct. 1 (next Friday and Saturday) from 12-6 PM, making with the Homecoming dress rental.

Cost is just $20 (a steal, I say) and Briscoe offers a dazzling variety of styles and sizes.

You can also bring in a formal dress and slice $10 off the rental fee. Thrifty and fashion forward.

You take your lumps and move on, eyes on the prize.

The win-loss record for the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad is a bit deceptive these days.

After absorbing a 6-1 non-conference thrashing at North Kitsap Friday, the Wolves sit at 1-6, which isn’t their usual level of success.

But, like I said, it’s a bit deceptive.

Coupeville’s schedule so far has been heavy in 2A schools, with the small-school Wolves sending their young roster into battle against much-bigger teams in four of seven matches.

Toss in a private school like Overlake here, and a traditional power like South Whidbey there, and it’s been a brutal run.

But, in the race that really matters — the battle to repeat as 1A Olympic League champs — CHS is still sitting pretty, atop the standings at 1-0.

In the week ahead the Wolves will get a chance to sharpen their game (and put a stranglehold on another title), playing two of three matches against their biggest rivals.

After opening with a home match against North Mason (yes, another 2A school) Monday, Coupeville plays at Chimacum (0-1 in league) Wednesday, then welcomes Klahowya (1-1) to Whidbey Friday.

Those last two clashes will put the Wolves at the midway point of their six-match league season.

“Hopefully we get back on track next week,” said CHS coach Ken Stange.

Nipped!!

Downes

Hunter Smith

Hunter Smith snagged the other two scoring strikes, giving him six TDs on the season.

This one was a heart-breaker.

Coming off of back-to-back blowout losses, the Coupeville High School football squad made huge strides Friday night, but fell just short in its conference opener.

Unable to hold on to a four-point halftime lead, the Wolves were clipped 23-20 by Charles Wright Academy in a game played in the wilds of Tacoma.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in Olympic/Nisqually League play.

CHS will get a chance to even its record with back-to-back home games the next two weeks, facing Vashon Island and Port Townsend.

With the 1A Olympic League having joined up with the Nisqually League to form an eight-team super conference for football, Coupeville found itself facing off with one of its new rivals to kick off the seven-game league season.

And while the Tarriers scored first, the Wolves hit right back, using an effective air game to pick apart the Charles Wright secondary.

Junior quarterback Hunter Downes rifled three touchdown passes, two to Hunter Smith and one to Jacob Martin, doubling his season output.

The first one went 34 yards on a Hunter-to-Hunter connection, while the second scoring pass, also to Smith, staked the Wolves to a 13-9 halftime lead.

Downes hit Martin for a second-half score as well, but Charles Wright answered with two touchdowns of its own to hold off Coupeville.

The three passing touchdowns was one off the school’s single-game record of four, jointly held by current CHS offensive coordinator Brad Sherman (2001) and Wolf legend Corey Cross (1971).

Cameron Toomey-Stout picked off a Tarrier pass to pace the CHS defense.

In other league games, Klahowya clocked Vashon Island 35-14 and Cascade Christian clobbered Chimacum 47-19.

Port Townsend and Bellevue Christian wrap up the first weekend of league play when they meet Saturday.

Current standings:

School League Overall
Cascade Christian 1-0 4-0
Charles Wright 1-0 2-2
Klahowya 1-0 3-1
Bellevue Christian 0-0 0-3
Port Townsend 0-0 1-2
Chimacum 0-1 1-3
Coupeville 0-1 1-3
Vashon Island 0-1 0-4

The South rises, again…

Mason Grove

Well, it didn’t rain, so that was a positive.

Keeping alive an unprecedented run for fall tennis, the Coupeville boys net squad completed its sixth straight match without interruption Thursday.

That was about the end of the good news for the Wolves however, as they took a 4-1 beating at the hands of host South Whidbey in a non-conference bout.

The loss dropped Coupeville to 1-5 heading into another out-of-league road tilt Friday, this time against 2A North Kitsap.

Facing off with the Falcons, who are generally the cream of the crop when it comes to Whidbey tennis, the Wolves lone win was a three-set affair at second doubles.

William Nelson and Joey Lippo rallied in the third set to wax their rivals 6-1, making up for dropping the second set.

I can write a billion words, or, if I really want page hits, I can run a lot of photos.

So, let’s turn the blog over to wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken and his trusty camera for a few minutes, while I go count those sweet, sweet page hits.

The photos above are a mix of volleyball and soccer action from Thursday, with a few ringers from earlier games tossed in to sweeten the deal.
