Balanced attack, strong win

Play as a pack, win as a pack.

Spreading its offense between seven players Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad overcame a red-hot rival.

Mount Vernon Christian freshman Jake Feddema rattled the rims for a game-high 24 points, but the host Wolves still came out on top, rolling to a 41-37 win.

Coupeville’s third-straight victory, it lifts Hunter Smith’s squad to 4-3 on the season.

The Wolves countered Feddema by spreading the ball out, with different players stepping up at different times.

In the opening quarter, it was CHS fab frosh Chase Anderson, who banked in seven of his team-high 11 points as Coupeville built a 12-7 lead.

The Wolves stretched their advantage out to 23-16 at the half, watched as MVC narrowed its deficit to 34-30 after three quarters, then cruised in for the win.

Aiden O’Neill knocked down a pair of second-half three-balls to push his scoring total out to 10 points, while Camden Glover banged away down low for eight.

Hunter Bronec (4), Landon Roberts (4), Hurlee Bronec (3), and Johnny Porter (1) rounded out Coupeville’s scoring, while Malachi Somes and Jack Porter also saw floor time.

The Wolf JV returns to action Saturday with a trip to Neah Bay for a non-conference clash.

While Coupeville’s varsity hosts Darrington Friday in a Northwest 2B/1B League tilt, the Loggers don’t have a second team this season.

Wolf rival tabbed for big honor

It’s a nice parting gift.

Suzanne Marble, who retired after winning seven state titles in a 30-year run as La Conner High School volleyball coach, is being inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame.

With everyone playing catch-up thanks to the pandemic, the WIAA is honoring both the Class of 2021 and Class of 2022 at the same time, with the event set for May 3 in Renton.

The 11 inductees from the two classes include administrators, contributors, athletes, coaches, and officials.

Marble fills the coach slot for the class of 2022, while Phil Lonborg, who coached five sports in his career while working at Timberline and River Ridge, is the ’21 selection in that category.

The WIAA Hall of Fame includes such heavy hitters as professional athletes John Stockton, Ron Santo, and Kate Starbird, as well as the state’s winningest football coach, Sid Otton — best known for being my 9th grade health teacher at Tumwater High School.

Marble, a graduate of Mead High School in Spokane, led La Conner to 574 wins, bringing home state titles in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.

The Braves are four-time defending 2B champs, as there was no state tourney in 2020 because of pandemic restrictions.

Make the net jump, all night long

We’re at 1,420 points and counting.

Coupeville High School basketball players are making the net jump as the season rolls along, and we’re pretty sure we know who tallied each of those points.

Logan Downes is leading the way, dropping 24.4 points a game at the varsity level, but a couple of JV girls made big moves this past week.

Madison McMillan went off for a season-high 23 in a home win over Orcas Island, while Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo recorded 19 points across her first two games on the CHS hardwood.

With a busy week ahead — games Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday — all the Wolves have a chance to kick their numbers to a new level.

Return to days of spikes and sets

Never too late for photos.

Volleyball season ended back in November, but some new glossy pics just popped up, so we’re returning to the land of spikes and sets for a moment.

In the words of Lost, one of my three favorite TV shows all-time — Twin Peaks and The X-Files complete the trinity — “We have to go back, Kate!”

Hardwood hotshots rumble for positioning

Look twice, because it’s not a misprint.

As we head into a new week of basketball, the Northwest 2B/1B League standings are identical on the boys’ and girls’ side of things.

While overall win/loss records are skewed, both Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island hoops programs sit atop the conference at 2-0.

Both La Conner squads are 1-0, even if the league web site tries to count an early non-conference win over Rainer Christian as a league win and tell you the Braves boys are 2-0.

They are not…

Then comes Coupeville and Friday Harbor at 0-1, and both Concrete teams at 0-3, which means the Wolf boys have a little work to do to defend their league crown.

Things should start to diverge as we move forward — for one thing, the Orcas boys are much stronger than their female counterparts — and could start down that path this coming week.

Coupeville is busy, hosting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and Darrington Friday, though there is still some question as whether the MVC game, the first of two against the Hurricanes, counts in the league standings.

After that comes a whirlwind trip to Neah Bay Saturday for non-conference rumbles.

With all that in mind, where we currently sit:
