Track and field is a tricky thing.

Case in point, the Coupeville High School boys 4 x 100 relay team.

As we sit four days away from the start of the state championships, which run May 23-25 in Cheney, the Wolf four-pack of Danny Conlisk, Tiger Johnson, Sean Toomey-Stout, and Jean Lund-Olsen own the fourth-fastest time recorded by a 1A school in the event.

And yet, the Wolves won’t be in the lineup at Eastern Washington University.

A bobbled baton at bi-districts kept CHS from advancing out of the prelims, and like that, any dreams of a relay state title were dashed.

But still, as we take one final look at which Wolves currently own a top 10 performance among 1A competitors, we pay tribute to what the relay squad accomplished.

We also welcome Maya Toomey-Stout, who shot into the top echelon of long jumpers this week.

And, of course, we can’t overlook Danny Conlisk, who is ranked in the top two in all of 1A in three different races.

Two weeks until the big stage.

The Coupeville High School track and field squad has blasted its way through the regular season, the North Sound Conference meet, and districts.

Now, all that remains is bi-districts, which run May 16 and 18 on the Wolves home track, and then the state meet, May 23-25, in the heat-stroke capitol of Washington state, otherwise known as Cheney.

As the number of meets left decrease, the battle for the top of the leader board gets more intense.

Coupeville’s athletes are holding up well in the crucible, however, appearing in the top 10 of 1A in nine different events as of this morning.

You can see the finish line from here.

With the regular season and North Sound Conference Championships in the rear-view mirror, Coupeville High School track and field athletes are making the turn for home.

Still ahead – districts, bi-districts, and the state meet, which will play out over the next three weekends.

As everyone from Coupeville to Elma to Cashmere and in between ramps up the pursuit of state meet medals, every second (literally) counts.

Nine Wolves can currently claim a spot in the top 10 of 1A in at least event, with senior Danny Conlisk topping the Wolves with four appearances.

He’s 1st in the 200, 2nd in the 400, part of the 4th fastest team in the 4 x 100 relay, and 6th in the 100.

Fellow senior Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles, 4 x 1, 4 x 2), and juniors Mallory Kortuem (400, 4 x 1, 4 x 2) and Jean Lund-Olsen (100, 200, 4 x 1) pop up three times each.

Every 0.01 counts.

As the track and field season begins to wind down, the top 10 lists for 1A seem to change every hour, much less every day.

One person moves up two slots, then crashes down five rungs later in the day as meets from across the state report.

Ultimately, the only placements which truly matter will be those on the big board at the end of the state meet in Cheney in May, but it’s interesting to watch things develop right now.

Coupeville High School has one regular season meet left, this coming Thursday at South Whidbey, then heads to the postseason, with the North Sound Conference championships up first.

As we gaze at the ever-changing lists this morning, the Wolves have one athlete sitting at #1, and it’s senior Danny Conlisk in the 200.

He was also #1 in the 400 Saturday, for about 12 minutes, but now sits 0.02 behind an arch-rival from Elma he has yet to face.

And the battle rages on.

Can’t touch ’em.

With spring break sweeping the land this week, Coupeville High School track and field athletes didn’t compete.

Turns out they didn’t need to, as no one bumped the nine Wolves currently in the Top 10 for 1A even a single slot.

Not that there wasn’t movement in the rankings.

Andrea Markezich of Bear Creek (3200), Grace Patterson of Northwest (300 Hurdles), and Samuel Van Peursem of Cedar Park Christian (discus) all jumped to the #1 slot in their event Saturday.

But no one came for the idle Wolves, who continue to top two events (men’s 100 and 400), while appearing in the Top 10 in eight more.

After a quiet week, Coupeville gets a chance to get back at it in the coming days.

The Wolves have a home meet Thursday, with North Sound Conference foes King’s and Cedar Park coming to Whidbey, then hit the road Saturday to attend the Lil’ Norway Invitational.

As they prep for a return to competition, a look at the athletes who currently sit among the state’s best:
