Lindsey Roberts (left) and Mallory Kortuem are 50% of the fastest 4 x 200 girls relay team in 1A.

Two weeks in and primed to win two state titles.

The track and field season is just starting to really get going, but if the season ended today, Coupeville’s girls would stand atop two awards podiums.

Senior Lindsey Roberts, who finished 2nd at last year’s state meet, currently has the fastest time among all 1A girls in the 100 hurdles.

The rocket-powered supernova also sits atop the 1A rankings in the 4 x 200 relay, where she runs with Mallory Kortuem, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, and Maya Toomey-Stout.

If you scan the 1A ranking, six Wolf girls and four boys currently hold a Top 10 placement.

Senior Danny Conlisk and junior Maya Toomey-Stout are the team’s aces at the moment, popping up four times apiece.

Hot on their heels are Roberts, Mallory Kortuem, Jean Lund-Olsen, and Sean Toomey-Stout, who each appear three times.

Wolves who are in the Top 10 in 1A (as of 4:21 PM Sunday):

If the track season ended after the first meet, Coupeville High School would have two new state champions.

Now, of course, this is mid-March and the big showdown in Cheney doesn’t happen until the end of May.

So, simmer down, David.

But, that being said, as of this moment, the Wolves have the top time among all 1A athletes in two different events.

Danny Conlisk (200) and Jean Lund-Olsen (100) currently sit in the top slot, while Mallory Kortuem (400) and Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles) sit in 2nd in their respective events.

Overall, CHS has 13 athletes (nine girls and four boys) currently residing in the 1A Top 10 in at least one event, with eight of those Wolves popping up in two different categories.

As I admitted above, it’s early, with a lot of schools across the state yet to taste competition for the first time.

But here, in the moment, Coupeville is kickin’ fanny and takin’ names, so let’s celebrate the early success.

If you bought early on Jacob Smith stock, it’s about to pay off.

The Coupeville High School senior is getting quicker as the season winds down, and, with his performance Friday at the Olympic League Finals, he’s positioned himself as a legitimate state title contender.

Smith, who shattered a 31-year-old school record in the 100, is the second-fastest male runner in all of 1A in the event.

Add the 200, where he sits as the third-fastest, and the 4 x 100, where he and his teammates are in 7th place, and he’s on target to have a busy time in Cheney at the end of May.

Smith, who has two state meet medals to his credit, has a chance to join elite company if he makes it to state and does well.

Only 21 Wolf track and field stars have won three or more medals during their career and only eight have gone as high as five.

Coupeville junior hurdler Lindsey Roberts, who has also been a top 10 fixture all season, has four medals.

One more and she joins Makana Stone (7), Natasha Bamberger (6) and Yashmeen Knox (5) as the only CHS girls in the Five-Timers Club.

For the moment, though, the Wolves sit a little under two weeks until districts, and three from state. While they train, all they can do is watch the rankings.

While the Olympic League meet is in the books, other conferences haven’t run their events yet. So, expect a little shuffling in the Top 10 lists, even at the top.

But, at this exact moment, 8:31 AM, Sunday, May 6, here’s how Coupeville stacks up against the best of 1A:

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (7th) 15.82 *Same position on charts*

Boys:

100 — Jacob Smith (2nd) 11.12 *Up three slots*

200 — Smith (3rd) 22.87 *Up one slot*

4 x 100 — Jean Lund-Olsen, Cameron Toomey-Stout, Sean Toomey-Stout, Smith (7th) 45.01 *Down one slot*

High Jump — Ariah Bepler (3rd) 6-02 *Up one slot**

Nothing stays the same.

With the regular season winding down this week, the battle to be in the top 10 for state track and field marks has ramped up in intensity.

As they prep for the sub-district meet May 4 in Coupeville, seven Wolves are currently among the best in all of 1A in at least one category.

That’s down from nine a week ago, as the CHS girls relay teams were recently knocked out of the top 10 in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200.

While that chops three names off the list (at least for a moment), another Wolf has popped onto the charts for the first time this season.

Senior Ariah Bepler hit a PR in the high jump last week and that propelled him all the way up to a tie for fourth among 1A male jumpers.

His fellow senior, Jacob Smith, remains the top Wolf, with his name showing up in three different categories at the moment.

Now, as soon as you finish reading this, a tardy coach or administrator may pop onto Athletic.net and drop a time or height or distance which throws all this asunder.

But, at this exact moment, 10:25 PM, Saturday, Apr. 28, here’s how Coupeville stacks up against the best of 1A:

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (7th) 15.82 *Down one slot*

Boys:

100 — Jacob Smith (5th) 11.32 *Same position on charts*

200 — Smith (4th) 22.96 *Up three slots*

400 — Danny Conlisk (8th) 51.97 *Down two slots*

4 x 100 — Jean Lund-Olsen, Smith, Cameron Toomey-Stout, Sean Toomey-Stout, Smith (6th) 45.01 *Up four slots*

High Jump — Ariah Bepler (4th) 6-00 *Debut on the charts**

Day by day the jockeying continues.

As the high school track and field season begins to pick up steam, the battle to land on the Top 10 lists for 1A is an intense one, with athletes moving up and down almost on a daily basis.

Wednesday’s home meet helped propel a Coupeville relay team up into the spotlight, while its three individual standouts remain in the thick of things.

Senior Jacob Smith is a three-timer now, helping boost the Wolf 4 x 100 unit, while retaining his slots on the leader board in the 100 and 200.

Juniors Lindsey Roberts and Danny Conlisk are also still among the top performers, though Conlisk slid off the chart in the 400 (he’s now #14), while moving up in the 800.

The Wolves won’t have any chances to improve their standings for a bit, with their next meet not until Apr. 12.

But, at the moment, here’s Coupeville’s representatives on the 1A Top 10 rankings charts managed by athletic.net.

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (6th) 16.17 *Same as last week*

Boys:

100 — Jacob Smith (10th) 11.57 *Down four slots*

200 — Smith (3rd) 23.27 *Same as last week*

800 — Danny Conlisk (10th) 2:07.79 *Debut on charts*

4 x 100 — Jean Lund-Olsen, Smith, Cameron Toomey-Stout, Sean Toomey-Stout (7th) 45.83 *Debut on charts*
