Amanda Neitzel

Cheerleading has become the family business, and business is pretty dang good.

Following in the footsteps of older sister Maddy, who made an electric debut last year, Coupeville High School junior Amanda Neitzel is out to take the cheer world by storm this fall.

“I started because I saw my sister cheer and she would come home and tell me about how much fun she was having and how all the girls were so close,” Neitzel said. “I’ve always wanted to be part of a team.

“I love how all of us are all really close, we truly are one big family,” she added. “All the veterans are really helpful if you ask them for extra help on routines or cheers; they’re always there for you.”

Putting in hard work is a big part of being part of the Wolf cheer squad, something not always properly appreciated by those on the outside.

“We work really hard at every practice,” Neitzel said. “For our stunt groups our bases have to have strong enough legs and arms in order to get our flyers up in the air and keep them there.

“We work just as hard as any other sports team at our school.”

When she’s not slaving away at practice, Neitzel enjoys science class and loves Harry Potter, Iron Man and The Avengers (“I love anything Marvel”), while also harboring a semi-secret talent.

“I love to sing, but I’m really shy, so I don’t sing a lot in front of people.”

Those closest to her, friends and family, ease that shyness and make sure Neitzel feels appreciated and loved.

“My family and friends have helped to shape me who I am, they are all such amazing people and I’m thankful to have them all in my life,” she said. “Anytime I’m feeling down I have them to talk to and they always help put a smile on my face!

“I’m also pretty thankful for my best friend because she’s a lot like me; we are both huge goofballs and we make each other laugh a lot.”

Two women, though, stand as Neitzel’s closest companions, and she treasures every moment she has with them.

“My momma has always told me that I can do anything I put my mind to. She is my biggest supporter and she’s honestly the strongest person I know,” she said. “She always tells me how strong and smart I am and believes in me.

“My sister too; we may not always get along but Maddy’s my best friend and she’s always there for me and I’m always there for her.”

The many faces of Amanda Fabrizi.

The many faces of Amanda Fabrizi.

She was never one to shout and proclaim herself as the best.

Which never disguised how good she really was.

Former Wolf basketball/volleyball star Amanda Fabrizi didn’t make a play for the headlines or the photo ops, she just worked, and worked, and worked some more.

And it paid off, in a career that was capped with a particularly stellar senior hoops season in which she buried one dagger after another from long distance.

A superb outside shooter who could also be quite deadly with a lil’ running hook shot, Fabrizi, who celebrates her birthday today, was money.

Tough and gritty on the court, and a sweetheart off, much like her hard-court running mate at the time, Breeanna Messner, Fab was deceptive.

Other teams sometimes figured the duo for pushovers, mistaking quiet confidence for timidness.

It was a mistake they never made twice.

Fabrizi was relentless, crashing hard to the hoop, daring the other team to put her on the line with the game at stake.

Back up, though, and she’d bury the trey over your head.

Now, as she navigates college life and pursues being an orthopedic surgeon, her work ethic is still remarkable.

And, while Wolf fans don’t see her up close and personal like they once did, we all still wish her the best.

Happy birthday, Miss Fabrizi.

May it hit nothing but net, just like you always did.

Amanda Fabrizi was one of the most dynamic athletes in recent Coupeville High School history, but there’s one milestone she never accomplished.

So, today we fix that.

She can now say that she (and younger brother Clay Reilly) have joined the exclusive Coupeville Sports Throwback Thursday club.

I know. I know. The excitement is probably overwhelming.

Good thing Fabrizi has some experience as a lifeguard now. If she gets too light-headed from the rush of making the “big time,” she can always perform CPR on herself.

She was electric.

Capping a stellar athletic career at Coupeville High School, Amanda Fabrizi took a quantum leap during her final season in the red and black.

Fabrizi, who celebrates her 18th birthday today, was always a good basketball player. But as a senior, something new surfaced.

Running along side fellow captain Breeanna Messner, Fabrizi brought the grit, toughness and quiet leadership you knew she would. Then she added some sizzle.

She relentlessly attacked the basket, forcing opponents to backpedal and often foul her, and had no fear, regardless of whether it was the opening minute of the game or the final ten seconds.

Of course, Fabrizi was also her team’s best three-point bomber, which meant you had to guard her everywhere on the court.

With her sudden emergence as a player who was willing to take the scoring load on her shoulders, that opened up the floor for sophomore teammate Makana Stone to run wild and blossom into one of the league’s best players.

With a playoff win at home and a chance to play in a post-season all-star game with Messner, Fabrizi got the sort of ending you always hope for when a player works as hard, overcomes as much, as Fabrizi did.

Poke her in the eye? Slam her to the floor? She never missed a game or a beat, coming right back at you.

Off the floor, she couldn’t have been more different. Friendly, outgoing, extremely loyal to her family and friends, a young woman of amazing grace in everything she did.

Her graduation will leave a huge hole for both the Wolf basketball and volleyball squads. Inevitably, someone else will step up and take the spotlight. Circle of life and all.

But Fabrizi won’t be forgotten.

She accomplished much, and she did it the right way. She is an example to show to future Wolf athletes as they come up.

Here walked Amanda Fabrizi. She was a legend, because she never, ever stopped working.

It was High Noon in Internet City, and Amanda Fabrizi and her fans had the fastest trigger fingers Sunday.

Capping a furious final day of voting, in which all the rules were suspended and voters were allowed to stuff the ballot box for the final 12 hours, Coupeville Sports can now proudly announce the winner of our 2013-2014 Athlete Supreme, and it is Miss Fabrizi.

The recent Wolf grad, who was a standout volleyball player and a deadly scorer for the CHS girls’ basketball squad, came storming out of a second place tie Sunday morning and never looked back.

She roared past fellow Class of 2014 grad Jake Tumblin, who had led since the poll debuted Wednesday, eventually building a margin of more than 500 votes before the gridiron giant staged a late rally.

Fabrizi ultimately claimed a 237-vote win over Tumblin, while CHS junior football/baseball star Josh Bayne jumped from 10th to 3rd over the final hours of the poll.

Defending champ Nick Streubel was a non-factor the second time around, despite being selected as an All-State football player.

One suspects big sis Amanda, who carried him to voting victory last year, was too busy with her own college graduation to spend much time mashing computer keys.

The final vote totals:

Amanda Fabrizi – 1,365

Jake Tumblin – 1,128

Josh Bayne – 652

Makana Stone – 417

Hailey Hammer – 326

Breeanna Messner – 304

Ben Etzell – 131

Julia Myers – 127

Nick Streubel – 94

Aaron Curtin – 93

Wiley Hesselgrave – 92

Madeline Strasburg – 91
