Renninger and Hannah Davidson share some quality time on the bench.

Avalon Renninger is a bulldog.

That’s how her new basketball coach, CHS girls’ hoops guru David King, refers to her, and it’s an apt description.

Watch any of her games at the middle school level, and Renninger, who will be a freshman this fall, was always (and I mean always) in the thick of things.

She fought for every loose ball, battled for every rebound, refused to give an inch to any rival, regardless of size.

Renninger would tear you to pieces, wear you down, then stroll away, huge smile on her face.

Exactly the kind of indispensable, never-back-down athlete every coach wants.

For her part, Renninger, who intends to play soccer, basketball and either tennis or track, embraces hard work. Always has, always will.

“If I had one major strength as an athlete it would be my work ethic,” she said. “I always try my hardest and put in 110% and that’s something I do not plan on changing.”

While she enjoys all her sports (“I really enjoy the opportunities of playing sports. I really like meeting new people and sharing the common interest of the sport”), the hardwood calls to her.

“Basketball is by far my favorite sport,” Renninger said. “I love playing with my team and it is the best feeling in the world to make that pass or shoot that last shot in the game that makes a difference.”

A fun-loving, very outgoing young woman, she embraces her teammates and holds them close.

“I love to hang out with my friends!!,” Renninger said. “I play most of my sports with them so it makes it easy to hang out after practice.

“I really like having the support from them with everything I do.”

As she makes the jump to high school, where she’ll join older sister Sage, who has been a CHS tennis and soccer star the past two years, Avalon just wants a chance to prove herself.

“My goals as a freshmen are to get some time on either the field or the court and to just keep improving,” she said. “I want to make the most of my sports and I just overall want to get better and have fun with my friends and teammates as I go.”

Helping her reach those goals are a number of people, from family to coaches.

“If I had an area I needed to work on it would probably be not being as hard on my self as I am,” Renninger said. “Coach King has really helped me with that and I want to keep improving to try to stay positive.

Even though I haven’t known coach King very long he has influenced me. He has been a very positive coach and I really respect him,” she added. “Even when I am hard on myself he has stayed positive and has never failed to make me laugh.”

Her biggest cheerleader and role model as an athlete might be her father, Phillip.

“I have had many people in my life influence me but especially my dad,” Renninger said. “He has been my number one supporter since day one and he was my soccer coach for a while and he never let me off easy.

“It seemed awful then but now I see how it has made me better and stronger and I really look up to him.

“I really appreciate all the coaching and everything that I have had in my life and I feel very fortunate.”

The countdown has begun.

Coupeville Middle School’s track and field team makes its debut Wednesday, with a meet in Port Townsend, and the Wolves are deep into preparations.

As they went through a practice Monday, wanderin’ photo man John Fisken, who was in town to shoot CHS baseball, softball and tennis, stopped by to snap some pics.

The photos above are courtesy him.

If you like what you see, maybe buy him a Diet Coke. I hear he likes ’em.

Wolf 8th graders (l to r) Emma Mathusek, Scout Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout are all expected to make the leap to high school hoops next winter.

They closed strongly.

Bringing their season to an end a game earlier than expected Monday, the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball squads came within an errant pass or two of winning two of three on the road in Sequim.

Both of the Wolf varsity teams fell, while the 8th grade JV came away victorious.

Coupeville, which was scheduled to play 10 games this season, will only get nine in the books.

Port Townsend postponed a trip to Whidbey Mar. 10 because a power outage at Blue Heron Middle School cancelled classes that day.

While CMS coaches tried to work out a replacement date, BHMS administrators refused to reschedule, leaving the Wolf girls with one less game than expected.

In their final outing, the 8th grade JV was impeccable, strolling to a 29-26 win in a game limited to three quarters by the call of the ferry.

Cassidy Moody rained down 12 points — eight in the second quarter — while Megan Thorn tickled the twines for all eight of her points in the third quarter.

Tia Wurzrainer banked home five and Seraina Weatherford notched four to round out the scoring sheet.

The 8th grade varsity almost made it two-for-two, but a late rally fell just short and the Wolves succumbed 29-25.

Trailing by five with 1:30 to play, Coupeville pulled to within a single point, only to have two errant passes seal its fate at the very end.

“It was nearly a perfect ending,” said CMS 8th grade coach Bob Martin. “It was an exciting game to end the season.

“I’m excited to see that we have a lot of eighth graders moving up to high school next season!,” he added. “I’m very proud of them and am thankful for the opportunity to have coached them.

“Their work ethic, teamwork, and lack of individualism are admirable. I look forward to seeing their banners on the wall in the future.”

Noted defensive ball-hawk Avalon Renninger capped her middle school hoops career with a team-high 11, while Scout Smith (7), Hannah Davidson (6) and Emma Mathusek (1) chipped in to the scoring effort.

The CMS 7th graders, who played most of the season with a super-small roster, went out just as scrappy as ever.

Though they fell 46-13 to a very-deep Sequim team, the Wolves — who played the end of the game with just four players after Morgan Pease and Genna Wright fouled out — were still rumbling until the final buzzer.

“Final game was a good fight. We battled for the whole game,” 7th grade coach Ryan King said.

Chelsea Prescott capped the season with five points, giving her 97 in 8.5 games (11.4 ppg), best by any Wolf varsity player, 7th or 8th grade.

Pease dropped in four, Wright popped for three and Mollie Bailey sank a free throw.

“I am very proud of these girls for what they accomplished this season,” King said. “From beginning of the season to the end, they improved so much and it was a lot of fun to watch and a lot of fun to coach them.

“They fought in every game and really showed everyone that Coupeville is ready for any challenge in front of them,” he added. “I enjoyed being their coach this year.”
