Ben Etzell can’t turn around these days without someone giving him an award.

The Coupeville High School grad, now a junior at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, was named Tuesday to a pair of All-Midwest Region baseball all-star teams.

Etzell was a Second-Team selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association and a Third-Team pick by D3baseball.com.

The selections come on the heels of him being honored earlier this month as a First-Team pick by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Two of Etzell’s teammates, freshman Wyatt Ulrich and sophomore Jake Dickmeyer, were also honored.

Dickmeyer, a pitcher, was a Second-Team pick by the ABCA, while Ulrich, the Midwest Region Rookie of the Year for his work in the outfield, was a First-Team selection by both groups.

Ulrich is eligible for All-American honors.

After working as a starting pitcher during his first two years at dad Mike’s alma mater, Etzell became the closer for the Johnnies this season.

He led Saint John’s with 18 appearances, going 3-1 with five saves and a 2.23 ERA.

Etzell held opposing hitters to a .183 batting average, lowest by any Johnnies pitcher.

Saint John’s finished 25-13 overall, 14-6 in conference play, making its eighth straight trip to the playoffs.

They dominated the league standings, so it’s only appropriate they dominated the postseason honors.

The Coupeville High School girls basketball squad wrapped up a third straight 9-0 season in Olympic League play this year, and conference coaches honored seven different Wolves when they selected All-League teams.

Senior Kailey Kellner and junior Mia Littlejohn repeated as First-Team picks.

Meanwhile seniors Tiffany Briscoe and Lauren Grove, junior Mikayla Elfrank and sophomores Lindsey Roberts and Kalia Littlejohn were all tabbed for Honorable Mention.

The All-League honors were announced Tuesday, as the Wolf girls wrapped a very successful season with an awards banquet.

Coupeville’s varsity went 15-6, the third straight year it has won 15 or more games, while the Wolf JV finished 11-3 overall, 5-0 in league play.

Or 15-3, 9-0 if you award the JV forfeit wins for the four league games they didn’t get a chance to play when Port Townsend and Chimacum bailed on games due to a lack of players.

They’ll go down as the most successful team in program history.

This year’s Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad became the first to post a winning record, finishing 8-7-1 overall, 6-3 in 1A Olympic League play.

After collecting their third straight second-place finish in conference play, the Wolves brought a close to their season Friday night with an awards shindig which saw several players honored for their contributions.

Junior Mia Littlejohn, who torched the school’s single-season scoring record (girls or boys) with 27 goals, was, not surprisingly, named the team’s MVP.

Joining her on the stage were freshmen Mallory Kortuem (Rookie of the Year) and Megan Thorn (Most Improved) and seniors Lauren Grove (Defensive Player of the Year) and Bree Daigneault (Leadership Award).

All-Conference honors will be announced next week.
