Do they dare look at the standings? (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Freeze the records!

If the season stopped right now, both the Coupeville High School girls’ and boys’ basketball teams would be league champs.

Of course, no one has played more than one conference rumble so far, so there’s still a very long way to go in reality.

Next week brings two games for the Wolves, with a road trip to Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and home clashes with Sultan Friday.

After that. winter break hits, with the CHS varsity programs going to Eastern Washington for tourney tilts, and the JV teams getting a break in the schedule.

Where things stand through Dec. 15:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 2-3
Darrington 1-0 1-3
La Conner 1-0 3-2
MV Christian 0-0 2-2
Concrete 0-1 1-3
Friday Harbor 0-1 0-4
Orcas Island 0-1 1-3

“Not today,” whispered Mother Nature.

Or maybe she howled it.

Morton-White Pass made it as far as the Port Townsend ferry Saturday, before being turned around by a windstorm which eventually left all of Whidbey Island in the dark for the better part of a day, denying the Timberwolves a chance to play four basketball games with Coupeville.

The two schools hope to reschedule the non-conference clashes, said CHS Athletic Director Brad Sherman.

And for gas stat addicts out there, Morton to Port Townsend is 137 miles one way, giving the visitors plenty of time to enjoy bumpin’ across the backroads of America on a windy weekend day.

The odometer is clicking along.

Coupeville High School basketball players have combined to score 551 points across the first 14 games.

While there are early leaders, no one is running away with a scoring title just yet.

On to this weekend, with four home games against Orcas Island Friday, and four more against Morton-White Pass Saturday.

The nets keep poppin’, and the scorekeepers keep recordin’.

The cheers bounce off the gym walls, and not the prairie itself.

Other than that, it’s business as normal for the Coupeville High School cheer squad, which has moved indoors for winter.

Still loud ‘n proud. Still at the forefront of Wolf athletics.

Coupeville High School basketball players are spearheading an annual toy drive this weekend.

The Wolves host home games Friday (Orcas Island) and Saturday (Morton-White Pass) and will be accepting unwrapped gifts to be given to Holiday House North, which serves families in Oak Harbor and Coupeville.

It’s a competition as well, as the CHS girls’ and boys’ hoops stars will each have a box set up in the lobby of the gym.

“We are excited to give to some families in our community,” said Coupeville High School Athletic Director Brad Sherman.

“And we encourage all spectators to join us in helping to spread some joy and happiness as we enter into the holiday season.”
