Soccer showdown put on pause

Mickey Clark Field will be silent Thursday night.

A scheduled home game for the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad against La Conner has been cancelled.

The official cause is “a lack of healthy players for La Conner,” said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

With the game being a Northwest 2B/1B League game, the schools will try to reschedule the game before the end of the season.

Barring any more twists and turns, Coupeville will be back on its home pitch this Saturday, Oct. 16 to face Sultan in a non-league game.

That will be Senior Night for the Wolves and their seven 12th graders.

Play at home? If only…

Some day they will play a home match. Just not tomorrow.

Coupeville Middle School’s second bid to host a volleyball match is meeting with about as much success as effort one.

As in, no success at all.

And it’s still not the fault of the Wolves.

The season opener was postponed when Langley never showed.

Now, Wednesday’s home rumble with Granite Falls has been bumped due to a lack of refs.

It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26 and will be the season finale.

The CMS spikers have played three matches this season, all on the road.

The Wolves will try again next week, when they’re scheduled — for now at least — to host Northshore Christian Academy Oct. 18 and Sultan Oct. 20.

After that, CMS travels to Langley Oct. 25 before taking a second swing at hosting Granite.

Injuries sideline Wolf gridiron giants

The game that wasn’t, then was, is now no more again.

Coupeville High School’s clash Saturday at home against 1A power Meridian has been cancelled a little over 24 hours before kickoff.

Injuries, not Covid, are the culprit.

“I just received communication from our football staff that we’ve had some mid-week injuries that leaves us with just 13 healthy bodies for this weekend’s game,” said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

“Unfortunately, we are going to need to cancel tomorrow’s game.”

The match-up had only recently been added to the schedule, after Meridian’s league game with Lynden Christian was wiped from the schedule when the latter school switched to remote learning in the wake of Covid outbreaks.

Coupeville had an opening on its schedule, and moved in to replace the Lyncs, but are now also sidelined.

The Wolves, 1-3 on the season, return to action, hopefully, next Friday, Oct. 15, when they travel to La Conner for a Northwest 2B/1B League bout.

MVC Covid case scratches volleyball match

Three matches down to two.

This week’s schedule for the Coupeville High School volleyball squad took a hit Monday, with Mount Vernon Christian scratching matches due to Covid issues.

For the Wolves, that means Thursday’s planned trip to MVC is gone, rescheduled to Wednesday, Oct. 20.

JV will tip at 4:00, varsity at 5:30.

Coupeville (5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-2 overall) is still scheduled to host Concrete Tuesday on Dig Pink Night, then travel to La Conner Wednesday for a first-place showdown.

With the MVC match moved, CHS will close the regular season with four matches in as many days between Oct. 18-21.

CMS boots boys soccer

A little less soccer this season.

Pitch fans will still be able to watch both Coupeville High School programs play, but the farm team is taking the fall off.

Athletic Director Willie Smith confirmed Monday that the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer season has been cancelled.

The decision was based on the program — which is currently without a coach — being unable to attract enough interested players.

CMS, which is returning to action after playing just intramurals last season due to Covid, will still field volleyball and cross country programs this fall.
