Young cheerleaders bring the noise and excitement during their 2022 performance. (Corinn Parker photo)

The cheer life calls to you.

Have a kid in K-5 at Coupeville Elementary School and want them to participate in this fall’s junior cheer program? Now is your time.

Registration is open from Aug. 31-Sept. 8, kicking off in person Thursday at the CES Back to School Night/PTA Ice Cream Social.

That event runs from 5:00-6:30 PM.

Can’t be there? You can also register online at https://coupevillesoc.com/.

Cost is $65 per student, and your child gets both pom poms and a sweatshirt.

Or, if you’re content with just the sweatshirt and the memories, it’s $50.

Practices will be held September 12, 14, 19, and 21 in the CES Multipurpose Room from 3:30-4:45.

Junior cheer will cap things with a halftime performance Friday, Sept. 22 during Coupeville’s home game with La Conner.

Back on the sidelines, back on the mats.

Coupeville High School cheerleaders will split their time this school year, leading crowd spirit at games, while also working for their own chance to compete.

The Wolf cheer program, which has a successful history as a competition squad, including winning a state title in 2006, finished 3rd in 2019, then went to nationals the next season.

After a couple of seasons with just a sideline team, CHS and head coach Jennifer Morrell are ramping back up, with the goal to qualify for the state cheer championships in February.

“They are working on getting confidence in front of large crowds,” she said. “And creating a competition routine, with help from Crystal Cruz, worthy of a trophy.

“We hope to improve our scores with each routine we perform,” Morrell added. “Our biggest competition is ourselves.

“Once these cheerleaders get some experience under their belts, they will be a force to be reckoned with!”

Coupeville’s cheer squad, a mix of veterans and newcomers, has been hard at work during the offseason, preparing for its dual roles.

“I am super excited about the group of students that have decided to cheer this year,” Jennifer Morrell said.

“They are dedicated, energetic and motivated.

“This group of cheerleaders has been working hard this summer in the community and at camp and I cannot wait for our fans to see what they have accomplished.”

Coupeville grad Mica Shipley (right) is back for a fourth year as an NCAA D-I cheerleader.

Seasoned vets and fresh-faced newbies.

There are at least six Coupeville High School grads set to play college sports this fall, and they run the gamut from freshmen to seniors.

Leading off the Wolf alumni is Mica Shipley, who will be in her fourth year as an NCAA D-I cheerleader at Eastern Washington University.

The high-flying cheer supernova has been a two-season star at EWU since she arrived on campus, helping anchor the Eagle squad through football and basketball season.

Joining her at the D-I level is Sean Toomey-Stout, a junior at the University of Washington.

A two-time member of the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll, Maya’s twin brother played in six games for the Huskies last fall, including making an appearance in the Alamo Bowl.

“The Torpedo” made his trading card debut and became the first CHS grad to ever record stats for U-Dub football, which kicks off a new season Sept. 2 against Boise State.

Three other Wolves return as well.

Joey Lippo golfs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Ben Smith suits up for the football team at Eureka College in Illinois, and Lucy Sandahl gets back in the boat for Seattle Pacific University crew.

UMPI begins play Sept. 5, and Lippo, a senior, is also slated to return to the Owls baseball squad next spring.

Eureka football debuts at home Sept. 2.

There isn’t a public schedule posted yet for SPU crew, but if things stay true to tradition, Sandahl and her teammates will likely compete in a handful of regattas this fall.

The majority of the season unfolds for the Falcons in spring 2024.

Rounding out the Coupeville grads vying for glory this fall — unless I’m missing someone — is freshman Mitchell Hall, on the cross country squad at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana.

The Fightin’ Engineers kick off their season Sept. 1.

The gym already echoes with the sound of spirit.

The first game doesn’t arrive until Sept. 1, but the Coupeville High School cheer squad is already hard at work, taking part in summer camps.

A recent two-day event put on by the Spirit of Cheer booster club brought former Wolf coach Sylvia Arnold and international superstar Mica Shipley back to the CHS gym.

After the camp, the high-flying Shipley returns to Eastern Washington University, where she’ll be in her fourth season as an NCAA D-I cheerleader.

Working with renowned stunt coach Rob Webb, the former Wolves provided inspiration and expertise to a new generation of cheer stars, which you can see in the pics above and below.
