It was at that moment the tennis ball realized Heather Nastali meant to inflict some serious damage.

Making a play for the lucrative overseas market, I drop in a photo of North Kitsap’s Anna Bronchal, who hails from Valencia, Spain.

The courts were back in action.

After a two-week pause, the Coupeville High School girls tennis squad finally returned Monday, facing North Kitsap in a David vs. Goliath battle.

While the Wolves were unable to topple the Vikings, who are 56-2 over the past five seasons, simply having a chance to wield a racket again was a win.

Plus, it gave photo bug John Fisken a chance to swing by and snap a bunch of pics, some of which he shares with us above.

Welcome back. Now try and beat the giants.

Coming off a 13-day sabbatical, the Coupeville High School girls tennis squad faced a daunting task as 2A juggernaut North Kitsap swung by the Island.

The Vikings, with a deep, talented roster, entered play Monday boasting a 7-0 mark this season and a 56-2 record over the past five years.

In what could hardly be described as a surprise, North Kitsap kept that streak alive, overpowering the less-experienced Wolves 6-1.

Coupeville, a 2B-sized school forced to masquerade as a 1A school, has faced a brutal early-season schedule.

Five of its first six foes hail from 2A, and there’s still one more big school foe to go with a trip Wednesday to North Mason.

So, when you look at the Wolves 1-5 mark (they toppled previously unbeaten Granite Falls), remember that this early stretch has been mainly about enduring and surviving.

All six matches against Coupeville’s 1A Olympic League foes, Chimacum and Klahowya, are still ahead, with the first two set for the end of this week … if the weather cooperates.

Monday was a chance for the Wolves to see if they could be competitive with a true powerhouse.

The Vikings are led by three-time defending state 2A singles champ Danya Wallis, who is ranked as the #4 college prospect among female players in Washington state.

It doesn’t get much easier after that, as North Kitsap has talented players at every rung and a former highly-ranked college netter, Jordan Prince, installing daily lessons as a coach.

While Coupeville’s inexperienced singles players were overwhelmed Monday, the Wolf doubles duos put up a strong fight, especially at the #1 and #3 slots.

Sophomore Avalon Renninger and freshman Genna Wright teamed for the first time, with Renninger’s normal partner, Tia Wurzrainer, on her way home from a spring break trip to Austria.

Both strong natural athletes who are still coming in to their own as tennis players, the Wolf young guns forced a tiebreak in their first set and made their foes work hard for the victory.

Coupeville’s brightest spot came at the top of the ladder, as seniors Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger played inspired tennis to topple a pair of crafty sisters.

Mixing guile (Renninger dropping shots behind her opponents backs) with bursts of raw power (Aparicio slicing an overhead off the back line), the Wolf duo pulled out a very-satisfying straight-sets win.

With spring break dominating the news, Coupeville was the only 1A Olympic League school to play a game in ANY sport this week. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

One school brave enough to bust the schedule.

With spring break in full bloom this past week, every 1A Olympic League school not wearing Coupeville uniforms sat idle, in every sport.

The Wolves, though, were busy, getting in non-conference tilts in softball, baseball and soccer across three of the six days.

Things get back to mostly normal as we move into a new week, as all the lazy bones schools rejoin CHS on the field.

As they get back at it, Coupeville is holding on to the lead in varsity wins for both spring and for the 2017-2018 school year.

With victories in all three sports which have played a league game, the Wolves are up 6-4 on Klahowya this spring and 37-32 for the year.

Port Townsend (22) and Chimacum (10) each have a single win this spring.

Current standings through Apr. 8:

Olympic League baseball:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 2-0 7-3
Chimacum 1-0 2-5
Klahowya 1-2 2-7
Port Townsend 0-2 0-5

Olympic League boys soccer:

Klahowya 3-0 5-2-1
COUPEVILLE 3-1 4-3-2
Port Townsend 1-2 1-5-0
Chimacum 0-4 0-5-0

Olympic League girls tennis:

School League Overall

Emma Mathusek gets low to field an incoming rocket (and avoid the wind).

Wolf superstars Ashley Menges (left) and Ema Smith provide an answer to the old-school question … who let the dogs out?

Darren and Kelly Crownover commune with nature, from the safety of their “bubbles.”

There’s more to this pic than meets the eye, as our paparazzi has gone artistic on us, intentionally blurring out everything but the incoming baseball.

“So … we all agree … it’s freakin’ windy as heck out here and we need a domed stadium.”

Joey Lippo dances the bunt ballet.

Katrina McGranahan, manning the dugout bell that the Wolf softballers ding to celebrate big plays, enjoys her power.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these paparazzi from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

Apparently you can add wind to the motto, as lightning-fast camera clicker John Fisken braved sustained gusts Saturday to shoot every sport going down in Cow Town.

Wolf soccer glossies already hit Coupeville Sports and now you can marinate in softball and baseball.

Axel Partida flies the friendly (and super-windy) skies Saturday as Coupeville fights to a 3-3 stalemate with previously-perfect Forks. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

“You want to take our photo??!?! Well, OK, but only if you insist.”

“This blanket is NOT helping!!!! I can feel every wind gust cutting right to my very soul, man!!!!!”

Buffeted by some killer wind, Wolf captain William Nelson ponders the meaning of life, and why he can’t feel his arms or legs…

“If they’re playing, we’re staying!” The most die-hard of pitch fans have found their perch.

Derek Leyva, on the rampage and headed for his team-best 15th goal of the season.

Perfect no more.

While the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad couldn’t hang on for the knockout Saturday, the Wolves overcame vicious winds and a stellar defense to put the first ding in Forks’ armor.

Facing a team which had given up just one goal in six previous games, CHS rifled home enough scores to walk away with a hard-earned 3-3 tie on its home pitch.

Since the game was a non-conference affair, the two teams did not go to overtime or a shootout, cause … soccer.

Now 4-3-2 on the season, Coupeville drops Forks to 6-0-1.

The Spartans entered play Saturday having outscored its foes 32-1, but that was likely because they hadn’t met the free-wheeling Leyva boys yet.

The sophomore cousins each notched another goal, with Derek Leyva hitting on his 15th score and Aram Leyva netting his seventh.

While he’s not part of the family, at least by blood, senior captain Ethan Spark can score just like the cousins, and he punched home his second goal in the last three games to round out the scoring.

The Coupeville booters are wading through their toughest stretch of the schedule, and get right back at it Tuesday when they travel to Port Angeles to face a 6-2-1 squad.

JV wins:

With a little help from an outsider, the Wolf young guns erupted for a hail of goals late in the game to secure a 4-1 win.

The game was played 7-on-7 instead of the usual 11-on-11, and Forks loaned out one of their guys to give Coupeville a “full” roster.

That Spartan ended up knocking in a goal for the Wolves, who also got two scores from Chris Cernick and one from Jonathan Partida.

The game was scoreless at the break, then Forks broke the stalemate midway through the second half.

“We kept fighting,” Cernick said, and when the Wolves finally broke through, they liked it so much they didn’t stop, scoring all four of their goals during a furious final 15 minutes.

Photos abound:

While the Wolves battled Mother Nature and Forks, photo bug John Fisken snapped away and captured the pics seen above, and a whole lot more.
