Sluggers, fans KO cancer

They’re united in the fight.

Coupeville and Forks softball players, coaches, and fans came together Saturday for a doubleheader on the prairie, with the Wolves sweeping two from the visiting Spartans.

But the day was about more than just on-field action, as the CHS diamond program held its annual Strike Out Cancer event.

There was a raffle for gift baskets, emotional words from Wolf players Danica Strong, Madison McMillan, and Mia Farris dedicated to family members touched by the disease, and a free barbecue lunch for everyone.

Each Coupeville player took the field wearing socks which represented a different form of cancer, which they acknowledged during the break between games.

All total, the Wolf and Spartan backers combined to raise $1,603.42 for the fight against cancer, with the money going to WhidbeyHealth.

CHS assistant coach Michelle Armstrong, who was also celebrating her birthday, was a driving force behind the event, but she wanted to take a moment to thank everyone involved.

Wolves push for statewide respect

But wait, there’s more.

The Coupeville High school track and field team has picked up one more regular season meet, after being accepted to this Saturday’s Shoreline Invitational.

That will keep the Wolves busy as they prep for the postseason run of league, district, and state meets, which begin May 7.

It will also give CHS athletes another shot at landing a time or distance which moves them into the top 10 for 2B athletes statewide.

Those lists are ever changing, as you can see by our weekly review below, which has seen changes in just seven days.

As the Wolves make the turn towards the final sprint through May, here’s where Coupeville names pop up on the current top 10 lists for 2B track stars:

“Everyone played exceptionally well”

“Everyone played exceptionally well and showed real determination on the court.”

Playing under sunny skies on the prairie Friday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team held its own with its ritzy private school rival, battling to a 3-3 tie with The Bush School in varsity action.

The Wolves swept all three singles matches, with Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller remaining unbeaten on the season.

“Our singles players continue to dominate on the court,” said CHS coach Starla Seal.

“They delivered impressive performances this week, showing grit, smart play, and strong court presence.

“Their focus and consistency were key to our team’s success, and we’re proud of the strength they show on court.”

While The Bush School was able to pull out victories in the doubles matches, Coupeville’s coaches were pleased with the effort they saw from their players.

“A special shoutout to the Light sisters (Ember and Mila), who brought great energy and teamwork in their doubles match,” Seal said.

“Their fight and chemistry were clear, and we’re excited to see what they bring to the next match!”

The match marked the return of Sofia Phay from an injury, and she reunited with Kauri Hamilton as if the duo had never been apart.

“Their teamwork and trust in one another create a solid foundation, allowing them to stay composed under pressure and adapt well mid-match,” Seal said.

“It’s clear they enjoy playing together, and their chemistry has become a real asset to the team.”

Two months, one focus

April turns into May next week, and the push for the finish line ramps up.

High school sports end May 31 in the state of Washington, with the final state championships action going down that day in several sports.

As we creep into the first week of a new, and final month, Coupeville High School sports teams will be busy.

Girls’ tennis travels to Friday Harbor for a conference rumble Wednesday, while track and field spends the week prepping for the postseason, which begins the following week.

Meanwhile, Wolf baseball and softball each have three games on the slate.

Both teams host Orcas Island Tuesday, before bouncing island-to-island for a rematch with the Vikings Thursday.

Wrapping up things are non-conference games at South Whidbey, with softball heading to Langley Friday and baseball making the trek Saturday.

As everyone ramps up, a look at where win/loss records sit through April 27:

“Hard work is paying off!”

It was a classic beatdown.

Winning 12 of 18 events Saturday at the Coupeville Classic Invite, the Wolf boys track and field team destroyed its competition.

When all the points were added up at the regular season finale, CHS male athletes had racked up a score of 190.5.

Or more than the other four teams combined.

Put the scores of Mount Vernon Christian (50.5), East Jefferson (45.5), Clallam Bay (39), and Neah Bay (21.5) together, and they equal 156.5 points.

Sweet sassy molassy.

On the girls’ side of things, everything was a wee bit closer, with MVC (120) taking the team title, followed by Coupeville (93), East Jefferson (88), Neah Bay (62), and Clallam Bay (16).

Top performers included Katie Marti, who claimed three individual titles, winning the shot put, discus, and hammer throw.

Combine relay team wins with individual victories, and Chase Anderson (4), Preston Epp (3), and Cael Wilson (3) topped the Wolf boys.

All in all, it made for “a fast and furious day on the prairie” according to CHS coach Bob Martin.

“Tons of PRs, great team energy, and another strong showing by our volunteers and parents,” he said. “Hard work is paying off!”

Up next for the Wolves is the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships, set to go down May 7 in La Conner.

After that, for those who advance, will be districts and the state championships.
