There’s a new star in town.

She’s only in 8th grade, but Paige Hill is already making a mark for the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad.

She’s part of a group of fired-up young guns who have joined with new Wolf coach Jasmine Ader to revive the pitch program, and now she’s also a “made woman.”

That last part comes courtesy of Hill’s performance Thursday night, when she rifled in a pair of goals against visiting Friday Harbor during a 5-2 loss.

Just missing out on a hat trick, the promising sharpshooter became the fifth Wolf to score this season, as CHS has rattled the net for 13 scores overall.

With school spirit running wild during Homecoming week, Coupeville’s pitch queens put up “a tough fight” against the much-more experienced Wolverines.

“It’s important to remember that over half of this team consists of eighth graders, trying to uphold the standards and expectations,” a proud Ader said.

Hill got the Wolves on the board in the first half, taking advantage of a corner kick which Friday Harbor failed to clear properly.

Fellow 8th grader Ariella Lee-Spaulding picked up the assist, with Hill beating the rival goalie with a laser shot.

Exactly as planned.

“We’ve been working on attacking the ball first time in the box and making contact,” Ader said.

While the game was knotted up at 1-1 at the half, Friday Harbor pulled away over the last 40 minutes of play as the Wolves “struggled to make it to the final third of the field.”

Coupeville didn’t panic, however, listening to their coach and netting a second goal in the late stages of the game.

“I’ve been working with players on how they respond to things that are out of their control,” Ader said. “I asked the team who will respond and get a goal. Hill heard the call and responded.

“One shy of a hat trick is a bold statement.”

Coupeville, now 1-5 on the season, gets back at it Thursday, Oct. 2 when it hosts non-conference foe Granite Falls.

As they go forward, the Wolves will look to continue the trend of sharing the scoring load, Ader said.

“It’s an amazing feeling when you’ve had different goal scorers every game. If the team continues to stay this hungry the growth will be tremendous.”

Wolf captain Sage Arends scored Wednesday at La Conner. (Jackie Saia photo)

They battled the breeze and the Braves.

A still-developing Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad put up a good fight against the elements and a talented foe Wednesday before falling 4-2 at La Conner.

The loss drops the Wolves to 1-4, with a home game against Providence Classical Christian next up on the schedule.

That game is set for Friday at Mickey Clark Field, with a 3:00 PM kickoff.

Gusty winds in La Conner made life an adventure for Coupeville’s pitch warriors, who got scores from Sage Arends and Brian Thompson.

It was the first goal of the season for both booters, and the pair now have four and three career tallies, respectively.

While the Wolves would have preferred a win, they will take lessons from the loss.

“We made some coverage mistakes and passing mistakes,” said CHS coach Jim Kunz. “Many shots were taken, but they either weren’t on goal or blocked by the goalie.

“We needed to stick with the basics of passing down the field to the goal to take a shot.”

Coupeville will continue to work on fine-tuning things as the season progresses.

“We’ll be going over the breakdown in our performance to prepare for Friday,” Kunz said. “We’ll be making changes before we meet La Conner again.”

They’re island hoppers and speed demons.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad bounced over to Orcas Island Wednesday for a four-team meet, then the Wolves tore up the trail between ferry rides.

Elizabeth Bitting’s harriers claimed second-place in the girls’ team standings and third in the boys, with Friday Harbor and Evangel Classical taking top honors, respectively.

Friday Harbor sophomore Flora Compton and Evangel junior Joshua Sarr hit the tape first, with Coupeville’s Mikayla Wagner and George Spear a close second in their 5,000-meter races.

Overall, CHS had five runners claim top-five finishes, with 22 Wolves competing.

“They ran amazing,” Bitting said. “Now I know where they stand, what they need to do, and how to get there.

“We all learned a lot today. Quite a few PR’s from those who ran it last year,” she added. “Johnny Jacobsen was most impressive with a four-minute PR!!”

Coupeville gets back at it next Wednesday, Oct. 1, when it hosts a five-team home meet at Fort Casey State Park.

Capri Anter gets the play rollin’. (Julie Wheat photos)

Volleyball can be a cruel sport.

Case in point, Tuesday’s road trip to La Conner, where the Coupeville High School varsity spikers won more points than their hosts, yet ultimately lost the match.

The Braves slipped away with a 19-25, 29-27, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13 victory, while the Wolves led on the cumulative scorecard by a 111-108 tally.

With the loss, Coupeville, the defending Northwest 2B/1B League champs, slips to 1-2 in conference action, 2-3-1 overall.

That leaves Scout Smith’s squad with some ground to make up, as it trails Mount Vernon Christian (3-0), La Conner (2-0), Darrington (1-0), and Orcas Island (1-1) in the early going.

Friday Harbor (0-2) and Concrete (0-3) round out the standings, with Coupeville slated to travel to Darrington Thursday for the fourth of its 10 league tilts.

Tuesday stats:

Capri Anter — 1 kill, 9 digs, 1 ace
Haylee Armstrong — 9 kills, 15 digs, 1 assist, 1 block assist
Teagan Calkins — 13 kills, 24 digs, 1 assist, 1 ace
Ari Cunningham — 4 kills, 3 digs, 3 assists, 1 ace
Lexis Drake — 1 kill, 7 digs, 3 assists, 3 block assists, 5 aces
Adeline Maynes — 1 dig, 1 assist, 1 ace
Dakota Strong — 3 kills, 1 block assist
Tenley Stuurmans — 4 kills, 8 digs, 22 assists, 1 solo block, 1 block assist, 8 aces
Sydney Van Dyke — 2 digs

The Wolf JV is off to a strong start.

JV wins again:

Coupeville’s second squad remained undefeated in Northwest 2B/1B League play, bouncing La Conner 25-20, 25-16, 11-15.

The victory lifts the young Wolves, who racked up 17 service aces, to a pristine 2-0 in conference action, 3-1 overall.

Tuesday stats:

Hailey Grijalva — 1 kill, 1 dig, 1 ace
Olivia Martin — 1 kill, 2 digs
Adeline Maynes — 1 kill, 2 digs, 11 assists, 5 aces
