Makana Stone tears up the hardwood in England. (Photo property Loughborough University)

She’s been a Player of the Week before, but now she’s taking it a step further.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone was one of three athletes recently hailed by Loughborough University in England, named as the school’s Players of the Month.

The former Wolf joins tennis ace Otto Sterner and hockey player Guy Sheldon in being honored by the Loughborough Students’ Athletic Union.

The trio were hailed for having “gone above and beyond and continued to support their teammates, participated in various lockdown challenges and kept themselves active.”

During her time in Europe, Stone has been a steady presence on the basketball court, helping lead the Riders to a 9-1 record in games in which she has suited up.

A three-time pick as National Basketball League Player of the Week, she sits with 168 points, 155 rebounds, 24 assists, 34 steals, and five blocks on the season.

Stone is second in the league in rebounding (15.5 a game), third in efficiency (279.0), fourth in scoring (16.8) and steals (3.4), and ninth in free throw percentage (75.7%).

Logan Martin keeps smashing his own PR in the discus. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

He’s closing the gap, fast.

Coupeville High School junior Logan Martin is chasing older brother Dalton, coming for his school record in the discus.

And now the margin between the two, which once stood at 40 feet, has been narrowed all the way down to eight feet.

Dalton’s record, set in 2016, stands at 161 feet, seven inches and was accomplished at the Olympic League Championships. Two weeks later, he claimed second-place at the state meet.

In 2019, Logan capped his freshman season by nailing a throw of 121-11 at districts, then had his sophomore campaign erased by the COVID shutdown.

Jump forward to 2021, and his first discus heave, two weeks ago in the season-opening Northwest 2B/1B League meet in Coupeville, landed at 141-02.

A great start, but Logan has since smashed that PR, launching a throw of 153-07 during a virtual meet this past week.

Now, he and his Wolf teammates return to live competition Thursday, when they travel to the wilds of Concrete for another league meet.

Emily Fiedler played strongly Wednesday, teaming with Jaimee Masters to claim a decisive win at first doubles. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

There was a little bit of everything.

Big routs, tense back-and-forth affairs, and a handful of debuts.

When it was all over Wednesday, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team walked away with a 5-0 win over visiting Friday Harbor, and at least a share of a league title.

CHS is 3-0 at the halfway point of this pandemic-shortened season, with all its matches coming against the Wolverines, who rep the only other school in the Northwest 2B/1B League to play tennis.

The two squads face off again March 22, when the Wolves travel to Friday Harbor.

A win there — and Coupeville is 15-0 in varsity matches this season — and you can officially add another league title banner to the collection in the CHS gym.

While Wednesday’s match finished decisively in favor of Coupeville, their arch-rivals put up a spirited fight.

The match of the day came at first singles, with Coupeville ace Abby Mulholland dueling with Friday Harbor’s talented top gun, Allie Fleming.

After a back-and-forth battle, Fleming claimed the first set 6-4, but couldn’t quite hold on to claim the full victory.

Mulholland, utilizing her height advantage, begin to spend more time at the net, dominating by spraying overhead winners to all the nooks and crannies of the court.

Fleming scrambled to the last point, showing a nice touch for keeping rallies going, but was eventually undone by Mulholland, who mixed in some sparkling drop shots as well as she claimed the final sets 6-2 and 6-0.

She wasn’t the only Wolf to bring their A-game, as Jaimee Masters and Emily Fiedler made for a formidable #1 doubles duo.

The two have different playing styles — Fiedler moves like a dancer on the court, while Masters unleashes blistering power off both her serves and her net game — but they mesh together fairly flawlessly.

Wednesday’s match also marked the high school tennis debuts of three younger Wolves, with Helen Strelow, Hayley Thomas, and Nozomi Hagihara taking the court for the first time this season.

All three showed potential, with Strelow a particular standout, teaming with Noelle Daigneault to win at the varsity level.

Undefeated and ready to roll. (Jackie Saia photo)

One team to rule them all.

Handily winning a battle of the last two undefeated teams in the Northwest 2B/1B League Tuesday, the Coupeville High School softball squad improved to a fairly flawless 4-0 on the season.

The Wolves got there by clubbing host Darrington 11-4 behind another dazzling pitching performance from Izzy Wells.

The junior ace whiffed seven of the nine hitters she faced, then stepped aside and let sophomore Gwen Gustafson make her high school debut in the pitcher’s circle.

Up big early, the Wolves also went to their bench, giving Sofia Peters, Melanie Navarro, and McKenna Somes their first varsity action of the pandemic-shortened season.

Darrington came into play Tuesday sitting at 2-0, but Coupeville, playing on the road for the first time, was more than ready.

The Wolves eked out two runs in the first, then peppered the Loggers for another four in the second, adding three more in the third to build a 9-0 lead.

CHS coach Kevin McGranahan flipped out Wells for Gustafson, gave his young guns quality playing time, and coasted in for the win.

Darrington chipped away a bit at the end, but not enough to get back into the game.

“We got a little sloppy on defense, but it never really mattered,” McGranahan said.

The diamond guru kept several key players such as senior Chelsea Prescott on the field to provide leadership, and the veterans responded as expected.

Chelsea played great when she got a chance, with a leaping catch in deep shortstop to end the game,” McGranahan said.

Coupeville spread its hits out, racking up 11 base-knocks, including doubles from Prescott, Wells, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, and Maya Lucero.

Wells and Mollie Bailey led the way with two hits each, while Audrianna Shaw, Gustafson, Bella Whalen, and Heidi Meyers all collected singles.

Coral Caveness picked up a walk and scored, as well.

Coupeville, which has outscored its foes 34-10 this season, returns to action with a pair of games this weekend.

The Wolves island-jump Friday, when they’ll face defending league champ Friday Harbor (2-2), before having a home game Saturday against Concrete.

The second of those games was originally scheduled as a road trip, but has been flipped, with the March 26 game against Concrete sliding from a home game to a road game.

Saturday’s home game starts at 1 PM.

Jonathan Valenzuela cracked a triple and a single Tuesday, part of a 15-hit, 13-run explosion for Coupeville. (Morgan White photos)

The bats were hummin’.

Pounding out 15 hits in the shadow of the mountains Tuesday, the Coupeville High School baseball squad demolished host Darrington 13-0 in a game called after five innings.

The victory lifts the Wolves to 3-1 and puts them a half-game out of first-place in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

And CHS will get an (almost) immediate chance to do something about that, as it hits the road Friday for a trip to play Friday Harbor (3-0), with the winner claiming the top rung in the standings.

If Coupeville rakes Friday like it did Tuesday, it should be advantage Wolves all the way.

On the road for the first time in this pandemic-shortened season, CHS jumped on Darrington from the first batter, and never let up.

That leadoff slugger, junior captain Hawthorne Wolfe, whacked a single to light the fire, one of five base-knocks collected during a nine-batter, four-run opening frame.

Scott Hilborn, Jonathan Valenzuela, starting pitcher Daniel Olson, and Cody Roberts followed with hits of their own, setting Darrington’s players back on their collective heels.

It didn’t stop there, as the Wolves tacked on three more runs in the second, two in the third, and a final four-spot in the top of the fifth.

Big blows came from Valenzuela, who rocked an RBI triple, and Hilborn, who bashed a two-bagger during the final rally.

With plenty of runs in the books, Olson teamed up with Valenzuela to blunt any chance Darrington had at the plate.

Daniel Olson was lights-out on the hill while pitching in Darrington.

The two combined to notch 10 strikeouts, while allowing just two runners to get on base all afternoon.

The Loggers eked out a single in the second inning, and a walk in the fourth, but that was it, as their lumber declined to do any big choppin’ this day.

Wolfe, Xavier Murdy, and Hilborn paced the Wolf offense, each collecting three hits, while Valenzuela, Olson, and Roberts picked up a pair apiece.

Olson was a frequent visitor to first base, earning two walks to go with his two hits.

Also seeing action for Coupeville on the road trip were Sage Sharp, Seth Woollet, Cole White, Peyton Caveness, Zane Oldenstadt, and Coen Killian.
