Double headers are a trap.

Well, at least they can be for a young squad.

The Coupeville 7th grade boys’ SWISH hoops team discovered that Saturday, as they rolled to a big win in their opener, then stumbled in their nightcap.

The Wolves opened with a roar, thumping Arlington 31-17,  but injuries, illness and tired legs conspired to sap their strength and they fell 33-31 to an overly-aggressive SV Sonics squad.

The split left Coupeville at 5-1 on the season and in sole possession of second place in a 15-team league.

With single games the next two weekends, against foes with losing records who will be playing doubleheaders of their own, the outlook is bright for the Wolves.

Now they just have to hope undefeated Lakewood stumbles in front of them.

Jake Mitten led the Wolf attack Saturday, throwing down 19 points and 10 rebounds in game one and 15 points and 17 boards in the second tilt.

Matthew Kelley, who has a broken finger on his shooting hand, had 11 points on the day, while Daniel Olson (6), Connor Barton (4), Caleb Meyer (3) and Hawthorne Wolfe (2) also scored.

Genna Wright

Genna Wright (with ball), breakin’ ankles and takin’ names all day long.

It’s their time to own the court.

With the start of the season less than a week away (Thursday, Feb. 18 at home against Chimacum, 3:15 tip), the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball squads are hard at work.

8th grade hoops guru Bob Martin has 15 girls, while guru-in-training Ryan King will have to make do with just seven 7th graders, it appears.

Since they can swap players around a bit (middle school rules are flexible like that), it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

The rosters as they stand today:

8th grade:

Ashleigh Battaglia
Luci Coleburn
Hannah Davidson
Jaden Marrs
Emma Mathusek
Cassidy Moody
Cynthia Rachal
Marenna Rebischke-Smith
Avalon Renninger
Scout Smith
Megan Thorn
Maya Toomey-Stout
Seriana Weatherford
Melia Welling
Tia Wurzrainer

7th grade:

Mollie Bailey
Thora Iverson

Can’t touch ’em.

At least not so far, as the 7th grade Coupeville SWISH boys’ basketball squad rolled to another win Saturday, crushing Lake Stevens 39-26 in La Conner.

The victory lifted the Wolves to a flawless 4-0 heading into a doubleheader in Mt. Vernon Feb. 13.

Coupeville spread the offensive love around, with nine of its 11 players scoring, led by Jake Mitten, who worked the paint for a game-high 11.

Matthew Kelley and Dakota Eck each added six, while Connor Barton knocked down five.

Alex Jimenez (4), Caleb Meyer (2), Hawthorne Wolfe (2), Logan Martin (2) and Daniel Olson (1) also scored.

“The boys played well today,” said Coupeville coach Pat Kelley.

The Wolves, who are actually a mix of sixth and seventh graders, wove the two together successfully, while also taking an opportunity to have some of their younger players share the court at the same time.

“The starting sixth grade five of Barton, Meyer, Wolfe, Martin, and Daniel Barajas played nearly nearly seven minutes as a group vs seventh graders and did well,” Pat Kelley said. “Four of them scored during their independent time together.”

Martin knocked down “a nice eight-foot turn-around jump shot playing post” and Barton “made a steal for a layup going full court and made three of his four free throws.”

Lake Stevens cut the lead to five midway through the third before Coupeville slammed the door shut.

The Wolves were especially pesky on defense, where Matthew snagged 11 boards and made off with five steals to lead the charge.

Mitten and Olson both corralled five rebounds, Eck, Barton and Barajas pilfered two steals apiece and Michael Laska forced two jump balls.

And so it begins.

The next wave of Coupeville girls hoops stars laid claim to the courts Monday with the start of a new season of middle school basketball.

A mix of established veterans like Maya Toomey-Stout, Melia Welling and Scout Smith, mixed in with young guns like Chelsea Prescott, Genna Wright and the heir to the Photo Bomb Queen throne, Mollie Bailey, are hard at work under the watchful eyes of coaches Bob Martin and Ryan King.

Their first game is Thursday, Feb. 18, when they host Chimacum (3:15 tip).

That kicks off a 10-game schedule in which the Wolves are home every Thursday and on the road every Monday.

On top of the world.

Or at least on top of the standings, which is where the Coupeville 7th grade boys’ SWISH squad finds itself after nipping the Mount Vernon Mayhem 28-25 Saturday afternoon.

The win lifted the Wolves to a crisp 3-0 and puts them in a first-place tie with Lakewood atop a 15-team league.

Coupeville, which actually has a mix of seventh and sixth graders (and one precocious fourth grader) on its roster, led from start to finish.

Running a high-speed offense that frazzled the bigger Mayhem, the Wolves closed the first quarter on a 10-2 run.

From there they stretched the gap out to 16-6 at the half and 24-14 after three.

With Coupeville running in its young players for much of the fourth quarter, Mt. Vernon made a run to get back in the game, but the Wolf starters returned to close things out at the free-throw line.

Jake Mitten sparked the attack with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Matthew Kelley filled up the stat sheet with seven points, nine boards, five assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Daniel Olson banged home six points in support, with Hawthorne Wolfe (2) and Sage Downes (1) rounding out the scorers.

Downes snatched six rebounds, while Connor Barton (4), Wolfe (3), Caleb Meyer (2) and Dakota Eck (1) helped out on the boards.

Wolfe and Barton had two steals apiece, with Downes doling out a pair of assists.

Coupeville returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 6, when it plays the Lake City Gold at Cascade Middle School.

Two other Wolf SWISH squads are also hard at work this season:

8th grade:

Next year’s freshmen, coached by Dakota Brown and Jake Prosser, are playing in a hyper-competitive AA division.

“It’s proving to be a difficult league,” Brown said. “The team has the talent and potential to compete, but needs to find that extra gear and desire to win.

“Rebounds, and defense are key to having success for us!”

4th/5th grade:

Under the guidance of former CHS star Greg White, the youngest squad is 2-2 and had a bye this weekend.

“The kids are really learning a lot but they are very new to competitive b-ball,” White said. “They have a lot of promise, so hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot of good things from them in the future.”
