The 8th graders are not impressed…

It’s their time.

The opening days of practice are done and the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball teams take the court for their first taste of competition this afternoon.

The Wolves will be in Langley for a jamboree (3 PM), before starting their eight-game regular season schedule at home Tuesday, Feb. 10 against Granite Falls.

Coupeville plays four of its first five at home (Feb. 12 against Langley, Feb. 25 against Sultan and March 2 against Lakewood), then closes with three straight on the road.

To get you prepped, a first look at the 20 young women who were hanging around the court when traveling photo man John Fisken swung by the gym the other day.

The score was deceptive.

While the Coupeville 6th grade boys’ SWISH basketball squad fell 30-21 to Sedro-Woolley Saturday, the Wolves were within a basket with 30 seconds to play.

Unfortunately, a press defense killed them at the end, allowing a much taller, more experienced foe to escape with the win.

Still, even in a loss, the young guns continued to show amazing growth, with two more players — Alex Jimenez and Logan Downes, a third grader playing above his pay grade — scoring their first baskets of the season.

With five games left, nine of 10 Coupeville players have etched their name in the scoring column this season.

Against a Sedro team that has been playing together for three seasons, the Wolves showed “they can hang with and scare anyone in this league,” according to coach Pat Kelley.

“A rematch in the playoffs will have a different outcome!”

Sage Downes paced Coupeville with six points and five rebounds, with Matthew Kelley (four points, 15 rebounds), Jake Mitten (four points, 14 rebounds), Daniel Olson (four points), Jimenez (two points) and Logan Downes (one point) rounding out the scoring attack.

Michael Laska, Dakota Eck and Erik Webster were “relentless in the paint providing pressure and forcing steals and rebounds.”

Coupeville is averaging 29.5 points per game, with Sage Downes topping the scoring chart with 37 points in four games. Kelley (31) and Olson (25) are hot on his heels.

Defensively, Kelley (40 rebounds and 16 steals), Mitten (30 rebounds and seven steals), Sage Downes (15 rebounds and seven steals) and Olson (12 rebounds and five steals) lead the way.

With the start of a new Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball season less than two weeks away, the Wolves are hard at work.

Dribbling drills, rebound work, learning to pose for the camera man — all in a day’s work.

Wandering through the gym before heading across the hallway to snap high school action, John Fisken caught the next generation of hoops stars hard at work.

“I hate double headers for this very reason. Bad enough playing early in the morning.”

Coming off a huge opening win over a talented Arlington squad that dropped down a division in search of a title, the Coupeville 6th grade boys’ SWISH basketball team ran out of steam in its second game Saturday.

The ensuing 31-24 loss to a tall Friday Harbor squad gave the Wolves a split on the day (they bounced Arlington 31-28) and left coach Pat Kelley with the slight case of the grumbles captured in the opening quote.

Still, Coupeville sits at 2-1 in an ultra-competitive division, with games against Sedro-Woolley and Ferndale up next on the schedule.

The Wolves opened play Saturday firing on all cylinders, shooting out to a 10-2 lead on Arlington.

“They ran into a buzz saw, being a very talented Coupeville squad,” Kelley said.

The game settled into a back-and-forth rhythm after that, with the two teams swapping out leads until Coupeville put the game on ice in the final two minutes.

A bit ragged after a tough game, the Wolves had to hop right back on the floor — it was their only doubleheader of the season — and they struggled in the early going against a fresh Friday Harbor team.

Coupeville rallied late behind Matthew Kelley, Daniel Olson, Jake Mitten and Sage Downes, but time ran out on them.
