Prairie welcomes new tennis courts

They’re done, and they’re beautiful.

Lousy weather slowed things down, but just in time for the end of the school year, Coupeville High School has its new tennis courts in place.

The four playing surfaces, paid for by the district’s capital projects fund, are located between the CHS gym and the school’s softball fields.

Tennis court work heats up

With improved spring weather, work on Coupeville High School’s new tennis courts is picking up speed.

Superintendent Steve King released an update Friday in which he predicted the courts should be “open for play sometime in June.”

With no available courts, the CHS girls’ tennis team is playing all of its matches on the road this season.

But, after being slowed down by cold weather, the increase in sunny days has helped the work move forward.

“Currently, most of the paving for the courts has been done,” King said.

“Over the next few weeks, they plan to paint and fence in the courts. They will also have to work on the landscaping around the area and seed grass around the perimeter.”

The new courts are being constructed next to the CHS gym, a hop and skip away from the old ones, which used to sit next to the school’s bus barn.

Along with the courts being finished, the dirt unearthed in the project, which has been sitting on the corner of Terry Road since last summer, is expected to depart in the next few months.

“We have also worked with contractors to create a plan to remove the large pile of dirt,” King said. “If things go according to plan, they will be taking care of this late summer or early fall.”

The construction of new tennis courts is part of the district’s capital improvement projects, which were approved by voters in February 2022.

Wolf fans build school spirit

They came, they saw, they built a wall of noise.

Wolf fans, many dressed as construction workers to honor the night’s spirit theme, came out in force Wednesday as Coupeville High School volleyball matched spikes and sets with visiting Neah Bay.

Capturing the off-court action, while dressed for his own audition with the Village People, wanderin’ photographer John Fisken delivers the pics seen above and below.

Not today, maybe tomorrow!!

Soon. Or so they hope.

Keeping alive the tradition of leaving us guessing when it comes to construction, the new entrance, bathrooms and concession stand at Coupeville’s athletic field will NOT be ready for the start of fall sports.

But, the shiny new home stands, complete with press box, will be fully functional (unlike last fall), so let’s take our victories where we can find them.

The official word as of Wednesday, from Coupeville High School Athletic Director Willie Smith:

Due to construction, the main entrance, bathrooms, and concession buildings will not be finished in time for our first home Coupeville athletic events at Mickey Clark Field.

Soccer Game – Thurs. 9/6 @ 4:30

Spectators cannot park at the Elementary School parking lot earlier than 4 PM.

Parking prior to 4:00 is to be at the Coupeville High School baseball/softball field parking area; entrance from that area will be made from the back gate of the field, behind the baseball diamond.

Football Game – Fri. 9/7 @ 6:00

Entrance/parking is available at the Elementary School after 4:00.

Additionally, we will have a ticket booth set up at the back entrance by the baseball field, if spectators wish to park at the baseball/softball field.

Home stands will be in our new stands.

Patrons will have access to the two bathrooms located at the end of the old Multi-Purpose room (as well as Sanicans on the visitors side), and our old concession stand will be running. 

We will update each week as construction continues.

“Hey, stop laying down on the job, man!”

Closer…

and…

closer to reality.

I’ve waited out in the rain and wind two years for a new press box, but my long national nightmare might be coming to a close.

Construction crews continue to chip away at building Coupeville High School’s new football/soccer/track grandstand, and the whole thing has taken a jump forward in recent days.

Will they really be done by Thursday (the previously announced target), so that the new stadium can debut during Friday’s final home football game of the season?

Or, more likely, will we first step onto the slice of covered paradise this spring, when boys soccer and track take over Mickey Clark Field?

Your guess is as good as mine, but, as the pics above show, progress is happening. Piece by piece.
