Last year, CHS got a new track oval. This summer, a snappy new shed will make storage much easier.

A new, swanky press box, coming to a football field near you soon.

So much room. And not a dead bee in sight.

Work on new football stands plows ahead.

Not a scuff mark in sight (yet) in the high school gym.

The gleam is back.

With school out for the summer, all sorts of work goes on behind the scenes at Coupeville High School.

One obvious improvement is the glossy new look of the school’s two gyms, which both just got a spiffy new refinish.

When fans return to the bleachers in the fall, they’ll also find new LED lights in the high school gym, as well.

And that’s just the beginning of things, as a new storage shed has gone up next to the CHS track and work on the revamp of the school’s football stadium begins.

When the Wolves make their home debut Sept. 8, fans will find new stands, now located next to the parking lot in front of the apartments.

While road fans make the long walk across to the other side, home fans (or me, at least) will glory in the swanky new press box.

Gone is the narrow, dead-bee filled box of olden times, though, after a year exposed to the rain and wind, I have a greater appreciation of my time wedged in there along side Willie Smith and Joel Norris.

This time around, it looks like there will be room to stretch out the legs.

Now we’re just a mini frig or two away from the big time…

Coupeville High School/Middle School Drama Advisor Peg Tennant is retiring after 22 years at the post. (Amanda Rice photo)

After two decades of putting the spotlight on others, Peg Tennant is leaving the theater wings.

The longtime Coupeville High School/Middle School Drama Advisor is retiring from a post she’s held since the mid-90’s.

That brings an end to a school career in which she’s mentored hundreds of students and produced countless stage productions.

As she moves on to focus on other parts of her life, Tennant released the following farewell:

Yes – it is true – I am retiring.

Here is the first part of my letter to the School Board:

“The close of the 2016-17 school year is upon us and after much deep reflection upon my 22 years of service to the Coupeville School District, I realize it is time for me to go.”

Please remember our second “rule” – respect – and remember my emphasis on self-respect and self-care.

My leaving has NOTHING to do with you, students – it has to do with me practicing what I have preached about – self-care.

It is way past time for me to take care of myself, for a lot of reasons.

To all past, present, and future CMS and CHS Drama types, I share this – my thespians, you know me in a way no one else ever has.

You open me to things I never knew existed.

You drive me to insanity and push me to my depths.

You are the beat of my heart, the pulse of my veins, and the energy in my soul … you are my thespians.

I’ll be cheering you on – your everlovin’ past advisor/director.

Robin Cedillo: “You want me to watch a 13-minute video?!?! Let me get my toast on first, son.” (John Fisken photo)

The Class of 2017 has officially left its mark.

One of the annual rites of passage for seniors at Coupeville High School is the hand-off of the torch to the junior class, and immortalizing that transfer of power with a video.

Every graduating class thinks their cinematic creation is the best ever made, so I’m sure the ’17ers would get loud ‘n proud right about now if the subject came up.

Take a gander at their well-crafted vid below (and, if you’re a completist, you can track the rest of them down on YouTube in your spare time):

Middle names, middle names as far as the eye can see. (Duane Baumann photo)

You can’t tell the players without a roster.

Before you head to Coupeville High School’s graduation (Friday, 6 PM in the high school gym), take a gander at the official list of those bound for their diplomas.

The list runs 71 deep, from Allen to Zanardi.

You know they’re getting serious when the blue triangles appear. (Scott Losey photos)

oval

They said “let there be lane numbers” and it came to pass.

numbers

Lookin’ snappy.

Now it’s getting real.

Another day, another step closer to being finished for Coupeville High School’s snazzy new, levy-funded, track oval.

Lines went down, lanes went up, and now … lane numbers and other assorted markings.

Next thing you know, CHS will be hosting its first home track meet since 2008.

My, oh my.
