Bargains, bargains as far as the eye can see.

Tomorrow is D-Day.

The Coupeville Lions 37th annual garage sale extravaganza takes over S. Main St. this weekend.

That means two days of mass hordes of people descending on Coupeville Elementary School in pursuit of bargains.

The sale, which is the biggest fundraiser for the organization, is built on year-round donations.

Doors open Saturday from 9 AM-4 PM, then day two unfolds Sunday 9-1.

The photos above, which showcase just a bit of the massive amount of goodies waiting to be plundered, come to us courtesy wanderin’ photo man John Fisken.

Local legend John Tristao continues to improve, three months after life-saving surgery.

The lead singer of Creedence Clearwater Revisited suffered an aortic aneurysm dissection, but doctors were able to catch it quickly and prevent him for bleeding out.

“Every day is a gift to all of us,” said wife Beth. “He continues to gain more strength daily, but it’s gonna take time.”

With both CCR and his other band, Johnny Bulldog, Tristao spent years donating time and talent to numerous fundraisers near and far, and his many fans have stepped up to help deal with his ongoing hospital bills.

Family friends started a GoFundMe, which we featured here on Coupeville Sports a while back, and I want to drop the link out there one more time.

Anything you can do to help a true stand-up guy is appreciated, by John, his family and his ever-expanding network of fans.

Chip in financially, send a message to the big guy, pass on the link. Every bit helps.

The few, the proud, the local.

Now, only about 3% of the runners involved in the four races offered as part of Saturday’s Whidbey Island Marathon claimed Coupeville as their home town.

That just makes my work a tad bit easier, as, instead of listing all 1,243 runners who participated in the marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K, I’m just focusing on the 38 from Cow Town.

Madrona Way, now free of Checkpoint Charlie for the first time in nine months. (David Svien photo)

The corner of Madrona Way and Sherman, now free of Checkpoint Charlie for the first time in nine months. (David Svien photo)

Our long national nightmare is done.

If you had nine months in the Madrona Way road project bingo game, time to cash in.

Checkpoint Charlie, which has loomed outside Coupeville Sports World Headquarters, right there on the intersection of Madrona and Sherman, is no more.

Freedom. Sweet, sweet driving freedom.

No longer do a kazillion cars have to make a right, shoot up past my duplex, then make the scintillating choice between taking Black Rd. or the highway.

Now we have TWO, I say TWO ways in to town.

What an age to live in…

Now what insignificant thing will I have to whine about?

Oh, don’t worry about me. I’m sure I’ll find something.

This one hits close to home.

John Tristao is one of the most talented guys I have ever known, and yet, even after he hit the big time (again), he always remained exactly the same.

The cat is cool, and he was cool when he was working for the Coupeville School District and when he was fronting for Creedence Clearwater Revisited.

Not being at the heart of the town’s gossip anymore, with Videoville being gone, I hadn’t heard about John’s health issues.

I didn’t know he had suffered a near-catastrophic incident in which his aortic valve tore “from the top of his heart all the way into the kidneys.”

I didn’t know he had an aortic aneurysm dissection, and that doctors barely saved his life.

My father, who worked nearly every day of his life, died suddenly, from an aortic dissection.

He was working one day, in the hospital later that day, and gone the next morning.

John Ritter died the same way.

Aortic dissections are hard to catch, and if you don’t know what you’re facing, almost impossible to stop.

The doctors were able to save John Tristao, and for that, I am deeply happy.

But now, finding out about his health problems, and how they have affected his family — all people I have known for years — I want to do whatever I can to help them.

John’s wife, Beth, is one of the hardest-working, light-up-your-life people I have been blessed to know.

She and her dad Leo painted the “new” Videoville (the building that is now Harada Psychical Therapy), and her spirit is truly contagious.

Their son Ty grew up, as many Coupeville kids did, in the aisles of the store, and his cousin, Emma Puharic, was one of my favorite co-workers when I was at Christopher’s on Whidbey in recent years.

With John unable to work, and with extensive hospital bills, the Tristaos could use all the help possible right now.

As we all know, I have little to no money myself, but I do have this blog, which reaches an ever-increasing readership, so I’m using it to help put the word out.

To find out much more about John’s situation, and possibly help him out, pop over to the GoFundMe page set up by friends of the family:
