They finished the season like they started it — leaving everything out on the course.

Putting in some of their best times of the campaign Saturday at the 2B state cross country championships in Pasco, the Coupeville High School harriers closed with a bang.

“They all ran beautifully!” said Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting. “What a cap off to an already great season!!”

Coupeville, which revived its cross country program in 2017 after a two-decade shut down, sent 11 runners East this time, most of the new era.

The Wolf boys had a full team in the competition and earned 9th place, one spot better than their finish last year.

Cle Elum-Roslyn claimed the boys’ team title, while Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League rival Mount Vernon Christian was 7th.

Dexter Delaney, a senior from Liberty, won the individual crown.

The Wolf girls ran strongly.

On the girls’ side of things, it was incredibly close, with Rainier nipping Pope John Paul II 71-72 for the team crown.

Friday Harbor finished 8th as a unit to give the NWL its best showing among schools which qualified a full female team.

Top individual honors on the 5,000-meter course at the Sun Willows Golf Course went to Regan Thomas, a junior from Saint George’s.

Saturday’s meet was the last one for three Wolf seniors, as Carson Field, Landon Roberts, and Thomas Strelow reached the final finish line after helping rebuild their school’s running program.

“It’s an end of an era!” Bitting said. “Missing those senior boys already. Heavy sigh.”

But the future is a bright one, as eight of the 11 Wolves who ran in Pasco can return next year.

That group includes two freshmen (Mikayla Wagner, Devon Wyman), two sophomores (Kenneth Jacobsen, Ethan Walling), and four juniors.

Aleksia Jump, Ezekiel Allen, Aleera Kent, and George Spear will be seniors next year, as will be Noelle Western, a two-time state meet qualifier who was denied a third trip by injuries.

They’re Pasco-bound.

Well, not until very early Friday morning, but Coupeville High School cross country runners were hailed Thursday as they prep for the trip to the state meet.

The Wolves are sending their entire boys’ team and four female runners to the 2B championships, which go down Saturday.

With 11 harriers set to count in the standings, it’s the biggest collection to earn the trip since CHS revived its running program in 2017 after a two-decade shutdown.

The calendar flips to November, and things get serious.

A new month brings with it the full crush of postseason action, with just a smidge of regular season play left to finish.

While Coupeville High School soccer saw its season end Saturday, with the Wolves barely missing out on a playoff berth, all of the other fall sports squads are still alive.

Cross country sends 11 runners to Pasco for the state meet, which goes down this coming Saturday, Nov. 9.

Meanwhile, Wolf football has a half-game tiebreaker with Friday Harbor — set for a neutral field in La Conner — going down Monday.

Win, and Coupeville is league champ and hosts a team from District 4, likely on Saturday, with a ticket to state at stake.

Meanwhile, the most successful Wolf program, volleyball, holds Senior Night Monday, with a non-conference match against Sultan.

After that comes the Bi-District tourney, with Coupeville as the #1 seed from District 1.

The Wolves play at home Thursday, then at La Conner Saturday, with two state tourney tickets up for grabs among six schools.

As we head into what is likely to be a wild week, a look at where things sit, win/loss style, through Nov. 3:

Get ’em the big bus.

Coming off of an impressive performance Wednesday in the rain at Tri-Districts, the Coupeville High School cross country squad is sending 11 runners on to the state meet.

Wolf running guru Elizabeth Bitting will be taking four girls and seven boys to Pasco for the 2B championships, which are set for Saturday, Nov. 9.

That’s the most state meet qualifiers in one season since CHS revived its cross country program in 2017 after a two-decade layoff.

Coupeville is sending its entire boys’ team to state for the second time in as many seasons, while four Wolf girls made it through as individual qualifiers.

Conditions were wet, wet, wet at Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood as runners from Districts 1, 2, and 3 came together to battle for trail supremacy on a 5,000-meter course.

The top two boys’ teams and top three girls’ teams punched their state ticket as a group, and Coupeville almost got both of its groups through.

The boys, who placed five runners in the top 10, finished 2nd in the team standings, narrowly nipped 31-34 by Northwest 2B/1B League archrival Mount Vernon Christian for the crown.

Friday Harbor (68) was a distant third.

On the girls’ side, Pope John Paul II, led by defending state champ Ruby Henry, ran away with the team title, racking up just 30 points.

MVC (82) and Friday Harbor (84) also earned state berths, with Coupeville (98) notching fourth place in the team standings.

While the Wolf girls didn’t advance as a complete unit, the top 21 individual runners also earned state invitations, with freshman Devon Wyman literally nabbing the last spot by outsprinting a Friday Harbor rival by five seconds.

From Coupeville’s 11 state meet qualifiers, senior Carson Field will be making his third trip to the biggest run of the year.

Landon Roberts, George Spear, Ezekiel Allen, Kenneth Jacobsen, and Thomas Strelow are now two-timers, while Wyman, Mikayla Wagner, Ethan Walling, Aleksia Jump, and Aleera Kent will make their state cross country meet debut.

“I’ve been blessed with an amazing team.”

Thomas Strelow’s words carried a great impact, as Coupeville High School cross country celebrated Senior Night Friday.

Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting has five 12th graders on her rosters, and she joined with family, friends and fans in congratulating her veterans for all they have brought to the harrier program.

The love was returned to her by her runners.

“Mrs. Bitting is probably one of the sweetest yet most hardworking people I’ve met, and she always wears a smile even when she’s had a bad day or week,” Carson Field said.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better coach to be with for the last four years.”
