What, just because school is done, you thought we were done with awards season?

You thought wrong, skippy.

Putting the final stamp on the 2014-2015 Coupeville High School athletic year, the Wolf track team handed out letters and certificates Wednesday at a team awards banquet.

Juniors Makana Stone and Dalton Martin headlined, with each being honored as members of the All-Olympic League First Team.

Stone was honored for the 400, an event she finished 4th in at the state meet, while Martin was the league’s top male discus hurler.

He claimed 5th at state.

Special attention was also paid to Martin (discus) and sophomore Skyler Lawrence (shot put) for being district champs and the girls’ 4 x 200 relay squad.

That unit, comprised of Marisa Etzell, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Stone, finished 3rd at state and set a new school record (1:46.64) in the process.

Wolves (l to r) lauren Grove, Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone are state-bound in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200.

Wolves (l to r) Lauren Grove, Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone had the day’s third-fastest time in the 4 x 200.

The complete Wolf state meet contingent, including relay alternate Allison Wenzel (far left) and shot putter Skyler Lawrence (far right).

Dalton Martin saved his biggest throw for the biggest stage.

The Coupeville High School junior unleashed the discus 147 feet Friday at the 1A state track meet, shattering his PR by almost eight feet and capturing fifth place.

His previous best, which had come at the district meet, was 139-1.

Martin’s one-man, one-event performance has Coupeville in 12th place in the current team standings.

Martin and sophomore shot putter Skyler Lawrence, who finished 16th with a lob of 28-02.50, were the only Wolves to compete in finals on Day 1 in Cheney.

Makana Stone and the Wolf girls’ 4 x 200 relay unit will be back Saturday, after qualifying for the finals with their performances Friday.

Stone, who was 2nd in the 400 last year as a sophomore, cruised in to this year’s finals with a fourth place finish in the prelims.

Her time of 58.95 seconds was a season best and put her second in her heat behind defending state champ Maya Jackson of Northwest.

The Wolf 4 x 2 relay team, with Lauren Grove, Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt and Marisa Etzell, will head into the finals as the third-fastest team, having run a 1:47.29 in the prelims.

The same relay team also ran in the 4 x 100, but were disqualified when a baton was juggled and dropped on an exchange.

Lauren Bayne capped her freshman season with a PR in the 3200.

Day two was all about PRs.

While the Coupeville High School track squad didn’t add any more state qualifiers Saturday during the wrap-up of the District III meet at North Mason, the Wolves did set a string of top marks.

Six of the 10 CHS athletes who competed during day two put up the best time or throw of their high school careers.

Throwers Dalton Martin (shot put) and Skyler Lawrence (discus) both finished third Saturday, missing state by a single slot.

The duo had already qualified in different events Friday, with Martin winning the discus and Lawrence beating the field in the shot put.

The two, along with Makana Stone (400) and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 girls’ relay squads (Stone, Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt and Lauren Grove) will head to Cheney May 29-30.

Complete Day 2 results:

Skyler

Skyler Lawrence was back on the victory stand Friday, but this time she was on top of the podium after winning a district title in the shot put.

The trip to the state track meet was a lonely one for Makana Stone last year.

This year she’ll have plenty of company.

Stone, who finished second in the 400 last year as a sophomore, will be going back to Cheney for a third straight year, and this time she’ll be taking a bunch of teammates with her.

Six Wolves punched tickets to the 1A state meet with their performances Friday at districts, and there’s still a full day of competition ahead.

The two-day District III meet, held at North Mason High School, wraps up Saturday.

In day one, Wolf throwers Dalton Martin (discus) and Skyler Lawrence (shot put) won district titles, with both setting PRs with their throws.

Stone claimed second in the 400 and both of the relay teams she is running on — the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 — finished second as well with season-best times.

She’s joined on both squads by Sylvia Hurlburt, Marisa Etzell and Lauren Grove.

Top two finishes earn a berth to state.

At the half-way point, Coupeville is fourth in the girls’ team standings and seventh in the boys.

Cascade Christian and Port Townsend hold the leads currently.

“Dalton rest now. Dalton want lemonade. Chop chop!!”

That little something extra.

It’s what every track and field athlete is looking for, and every cameraman.

A lot of Wolf athletes pictured here found that extra something Saturday, setting PRs and hitting big throws and quick times at the Olympic League championships.

Merrily clicking away, John Fisken also found that something special, and he was nice enough to let us gaze upon his work.
