They persevered and triumphed.

Battling bus fatigue, the elements and big schools, the Coupeville High School track squads acquitted themselves well at a four-team meet Thursday in Port Angeles.

Facing off with a pair of 2A teams (Sequim and their hosts), as well as 1A Olympic League rival Port Townsend, the Wolves collected five wins and 33 PRs.

In the team races, the CHS boys finished second to Sequim, while the Wolf girls finished fourth, but just a few points off of second-place.

Port Angeles cruised to the girls title.

Coupeville took dual wins in the 100, with freshman Maya Toomey-Stout and junior Jacob Smith the fastest in all the land (or at least at that particular stadium).

Joining them in bringing home individual titles were Chris Battaglia (shot put), Mitchell Carroll (triple jump) and Danny Conlisk (400).

The Wolves got PRs from 21 different athletes, with Aurora Zanardi and Gabe Carlson leading the way with three career-bests apiece.

It was an epic journey, but worth it.

Traveling more than 300 miles round trip, the Coupeville High School track and field squad joined 17 other schools at the Cashmere Invitational Saturday, and left its mark while there.

The Wolf boys, led by a win in the 400 from sophomore Danny Conlisk and second-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 from junior Jacob Smith, placed 5th.

Meanwhile, the CHS girls, who got a second-place finish from freshman Cassidy Moody in the high jump, claimed 9th overall.

While Coupeville didn’t take as many bodies along as it would have if it had just been a regular meet, the Wolves still saw 12 different athletes set PRs.

Conlisk was the only one to notch two personal records on the day, claiming PRs in both of his events, the 400 and 800.

His win in the 400, coming against a field of 23 other runners, came by .01 of a second (52.70 vs 52.71), as he out-leaned Nathan Berglund of Deer Park.

The smallest school held its own.

Facing off with their Whidbey rivals Thursday at the Island Jamboree, the Coupeville High School track and field team won eight events and set 39 PRs.

South Whidbey, a fellow 1A school, also won eight events, while host Oak Harbor, a 3A institution, captured 12 titles.

Coupeville was led by Jacob Smith, who roared to victories in the 100 and 200.

Joining him at the top of the hill were Skyler Lawrence (shot put), Jacob Martin (long jump), Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles), Cassidy Moody (high jump), Mitchell Carroll (triple jump) and Allison Wenzel (javelin).

Martin and Wenzel set PRs in their wins, while Moody, a freshman, was participating in her first official high school track meet.

It was a record-setting day all around, as 25 Wolves notched at least one career best, with 14 nailing two PRs during the meet.

Coupeville harriers Danny Conlisk and Henry Wynn appear in the official South Whidbey team photo.

Teamwork wins out in the end.

This year’s South Whidbey High School cross country team photo features an unexpected bit of red and black.

The Falcons decided to include Coupeville runners Henry Wynn and Danny Conlisk — who trained and traveled with them since CHS doesn’t have a harrier program of its own — in the official team pic.

So, solid proof Island rivals can work together in photographic harmony.
