Birthday buddies Jacob Martin (left) and Gabe Wynn. (John Fisken and Shelli Trumbull photos)

They are truly birthday buddies.

Coupeville High School juniors Jacob Martin and Gabe Wynn, both multi-sport stars for the Wolves, were born on the exact same day.

At the time, no one probably had the slightest clue they would one day unite at CHS to rep the red and black, but it’s worked out quite nicely for both of them, and for us, their fans.

The duo are superb athletes, with Gabe having suited up for tennis, football, basketball and baseball, while Jacob has been a rock on the football field and a fleet-footed runner on the track oval.

If you have to pick one sport for each, Martin’s biggest impact has been on the gridiron, where he hits with a cold fury (while smiling) and is a dangerous runner.

During a down season for Wolf football last year, he was one of the true shining stars, a guy who went flat-out every snap they let him on the field.

I fully expect him to be a leader as a senior next year, both in piling up stats and in keeping Coupeville moving back up in the standings.

With Gabe, it’s hoops.

The first time I ever covered him in person was during his 8th grade season on the hardwood, when he was a one-man wrecking crew.

In one game against Sultan, the Wolves were being smacked around pretty good, until Wynn, devilish grin creeping across his face, went absolutely bonkers and blew the Turks sky-high.

He’s continued that style of play through his high school days, where he has been, without a doubt, the player most likely to collect bruises from diving for balls, fighting through screens and, occasionally, flipping completely over the defender’s head while wrestling for rebounds.

Take both Jacob and Gabe off the gridiron or hardwood, though, and they really shine.

While they have made their name as athletes, both guys come across as quality young men in everything they do.

Well-spoken, smart, considerate of others, loyal to their friends and family, outgoing. The list of positive attributes could go on and on.

But, they have cake days to celebrate, so let’s just wrap things up simply by saying this — they’re as good as it gets, and Coupeville is blessed to have both of them.

Happy birthday, gentlemen.

Teo Keilwitz (John Fisken photo)

Teo

Keilwitz saw some varsity action on both sides of the ball during his rookie season.

He’s a star on the rise.

Having made the jump to high school sports this year, Wolf freshman Teo Keilwitz is already starting to make a name for himself.

After playing football in the fall, where he saw some varsity action on both sides of the ball and was a leader for the JV, he’s currently running the pitch with the CHS booters.

A midfielder for the Wolves, he’ll see action today on his birthday when Coupeville hosts Forks in non-conference games (12:30 varsity/2:30 JV).

Of course, Keilwitz is not just an athlete, also bringing big brain power to his role on the school’s always-electrifying Science Olympiad team as well.

A strong mix of book smarts and athletic skills, he seems to have an especially bright future ahead of him.

As he continues to become a vital part of Wolf Nation, we want to take a quick moment to say happy birthday to Teo.

May your day, and the years to come, both at CHS and beyond, be blessed, Mr. Keilwitz.

Mitchell Losey (John Fisken photo)

He’s the Easy Rider.

For the last four years, Mitchell Losey has made it look easy, cruising through life with a grin on his face and a low-key attitude that is refreshing.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has had an impact both on the football field and the track oval for the Wolves, continuing a proud family tradition that stretches back several generations.

Through it all, he has never been one to thump his chest and demand his time in the spotlight.

Losey has been the ultimate team warrior, a guy willing to get down in the trenches and do the hard work, the dirty work.

His teammates and coaches know what kind of player he is, and accord him respect, and so should we as fans.

Mitchell has been the very definition of solid, on and off the field, and he has represented the family legacy very well.

He may be handing over the keys to the kingdom to younger brother Shane and getting ready to head off into the real world, but he’ll always be a Wolf first and foremost.

Parents Scott and Melissa should be proud of the solid young man they have raised.

Mitchell is a class act (and he stars in one of my favorite photos ever snapped) and I want to wish him all the best on his cake day.

Happy birthday, Mr. Losey. Keep on keepin’ on.

Oliana Stange (John Fisken photo)

Oliana Stange plays with the CMS band last year. (John Fisken photo)

Oliana Stange, daughter of CHS tennis coach Ken Stange and college professor Ericka Cooley, is currently an 8th grader in Langley.

In this first-person account she looks back fondly on her time as a member of the Coupeville Middle School band.

When I was in seventh grade, I played with the band at football and basketball games.

I wasn’t required to, only the high schoolers were.

I loved playing the saxophone, so I decided I would go to get some extra time in.

But as it turned out, pep band was so much more than just playing your instrument.

Last year, Coupeville’s football team did so well.

I remember how excited I would get when they would score a touchdown. That meant we could play “On Wisconsin.”

Once, we played the school song eight times in one game!

That was such an exciting day.

Once it had rained before the game started. The bleachers were freezing cold and soaked in rain.

Jacob Zettle brought rain pants, a rain jacket, and gloves. It made me laugh so much.

Even though I was cold that game, it was still a lot of fun.

Basketball season was just as much fun.

Watching the girls’ basketball team shred their opponents paired well with the songs we played, because we were even more hopped up on adrenaline.

I remember Mr. Jenkins would shout out the song we were going to play. He would shout “Get ready!”

I always said “Get ready for what?”

I didn’t mean to make a joke, I just didn’t recognize the song title.

Sorry Mr. Jenkins. That probably made you mad.

Because playing with the band was so much more to me than playing in between the actual game and the cheerleaders.

It was eating my body weight in popcorn, using a hair dryer to dry my music after it got soaked in rain, and screaming when your team scored.

It was fun times spent with your friends and giving people candy.

And most of all, it was learning not to eat too much concession stand food.

Too much will give you a stomachache. Trust me, I know from experience.

Ryan Labrador (John Fisken photos)

He holds the line.

And sometimes comes busting through it, with fire in his eyes.

Coupeville High School freshman Ryan Labrador, who celebrates a birthday today, is a rising star in the world of Wolf sports.

As a football lineman, he was rock-solid his first time around, playing both ways and getting some attention from his coaches.

Given a chance to play some extensive varsity time in the season finale against Vashon Island, Labrador erupted for three tackles.

That one-game performance shot him up the CHS charts and landed him in the top 20 for the season, indicating a bright future on the gridiron.

Now, he’s out and about this spring as a member of the Wolf track and field team.

Tossing the shot put and javelin, Labrador is well on his way to follow in the footsteps of accomplished older teammates like Dalton Martin and Grey Rische.

As he moves forward in his CHS sports career, we just want to take a moment to wish him the best. Both on, and off, the athletic stage.

Happy birthday, Ryan!
