Charles Clark: The Man, The Myth, The Legend

His legacy lives on.

Charles Clark, or “Uncle Chuck” as he was known to just about everyone he met, was a great football coach, and a better man.

His passing late last year hit hard, especially in Coupeville, where he was a vital part of Wolf Nation.

Here’s a remembrance I wrote at the time about the larger-than-life Uncle Chuck, and what he meant to me:

Goodnight, Uncle Chuck, and thank you

Now, his sister, Gwendolyn Oest, is setting up an education scholarship to honor her brother’s impact on young football players in Coupeville and Oak Harbor.

The scholarship details are still being worked out, but you can get in on the ground floor and join the friends of Uncle Chuck by donating to the cause.

Dominic Coffman was a First-Team All-Conference pick on both offense and defense. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

The best defensive football player in the Northwest 2B/1B League wore a Coupeville uniform.

That’s the opinion of conference coaches, who tabbed junior cornerback Scott Hilborn as Defensive MVP when All-League honors were announced.

Friday Harbor running back Connor Haines, a senior, earned Offensive MVP.

La Conner claimed Best Sportsmanship, Friday Harbor’s Brock Hauck was tabbed Coach of the Year, and Haines was nominated for the All-State game.

Hilborn, Dominic Coffman, and Daylon Houston were honored as First-Team All-Conference selections on both sides of the ball, with Brian Casey, Kai Wong, William Davidson, and Tim Ursu each picked for one of the teams.

Coupeville went 2-2 in league play, coming up just short in a triple-overtime loss to Friday Harbor, which would have given them a share of the NWL title.

The Wolves closed their season by knocking off 2A Evergreen of Seattle on the road to finish at 3-5 overall.

No one got away from Scott Hilborn.

Lyla Stuurmans and Coupeville High School volleyball finished second at the district tourney. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Logan Downes and the Wolves finished the season with a win against a Seattle-based team.

We’ve reached the finish line.

Saturday’s state cross country meet marked the end of fall sports for Coupeville High School, so today’s standings are the last you’ll see until basketball season gets going.

Not all Northwest 2B/1B League teams are done yet, with La Conner volleyball heading to Yakima to make a run at a third-straight 2B state title.

Darrington’s spikers, who Coupeville beat twice this season, are also off to state, but at the 1B level.

The Loggers benefited from taking part in a 10-team District 1 tourney which offered up three tickets to the big dance.

Knocking off NWL foe Orcas Island in the third-place match Saturday, Darrington joins Grace Academy and Shoreline Christian in advancing.

Despite finishing ahead of the Loggers in the regular season, Coupeville had a tougher postseason draw, with just three 2B schools competing for one trip to state.

Also still in play are a bunch of soccer squads, with six NWL teams making the cut for what are combined 1B/2B state tourneys.

On the boys side, Orcas Island, Providence Classical Christian, Mount Vernon Christian, and Friday Harbor are still alive, while MVC and Friday Harbor’s girls teams play on as well.

But here in Coupeville, it’s time to head into the gym.

Final fall sports standings:

Wolf QB Logan Downes hands off to Dominic Coffman, who scored five touchdowns in eight games this season. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They shared the load.

With a roster which fluctuated between 20-23 players, the Coupeville High School football team managed to get 10 of them into the end zone this season.

Junior Scott Hilborn was the front runner, banging to pay-dirt 12 times in eight games, while six of his teammates scored multiple times.

Those 12 touchdowns are the third-best single-season showing for a Wolf player in the Coupeville Sports era (2012-2021), trailing just Josh Bayne (25 in 2014) and Hunter Smith (14 in 2016).

Both of those CHS gridiron legends had 10 games in their seasons.

The best thing for Coupeville coaches is the knowledge that nine of 10 players who scored can return next season, with senior Cole Hutchinson the only departing player from the list.

Final scoring stats (8 games):

Touchdowns:

Scott Hilborn – 12
Dominic Coffman – 5
Logan Downes – 3
Daylon Houston – 2

Cole Hutchinson – 1
Johnny Porter – 1
Mikey Robinett – 1

PATs:

Daylon Houston – 10

Conversions:

Cameron Breaux – 1
Downes – 1
Hutchinson – 1

Points:
