Ready, aim, fire, collect cash.

Coupeville High School spikers each launched 100 serves Friday, as the Wolf volleyball teams held a Serve-A-Thon fundraiser.

Each player collected pledges for how many serves they could spin into the court, and the money will be collected over the next few weeks.

Overall, the Wolves converted on 1235 of 1600 serves, with three different players cracking a 90% success rate.

The top six finishers:

Lyla Stuurmans – 93
Grey Peabody – 91
Madison McMillan – 90
Katie Marti – 87
Jada Heaton – 85
Chloe Marzocca – 85

CHS coach Cory Whitmore uses old-school math skills to total up the serves.

Cow Town for the wet and wild win.

A Coupeville quartet stood tall at the annual Penn Cove Classic, combining to shoot 14 under par to top a field which pushed 60 duffers.

CHS grads Steven Dozier, Jared Murdy, and the magnificently bearded Matt Helm were joined by Wolf Dad Fred Farris on the victory stand.

The annual golf tourney, sponsored by Coupeville brothers Mitch and Marc Aparicio through their Penn Cove Brewing Co., raises money for scholarships and local non-profits.

While liquid sunshine plagued the event, it never put a damper on things.

“We had a blast yesterday, despite the rain,” the Aparicio brothers said.

“Thank you to all the hole sponsors, our customers who donated amazing raffle prizes and the volunteers who made this day happen!

“All the support of our small Whidbey business is greatly appreciated.”

Get out the golf clubs and tee off to help kids.

The Penn Cove Brewing Company, owned by Coupeville brothers Mitch and Marc Aparicio, is hosting its annual Penn Cove Classic next Saturday, Sept. 23.

The event is held at the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor and will include a putting contest, a complimentary box lunch for competitors, a shotgun start to the tourney, and a silent auction afterwards.

You still have time to register to play or become a sponsor if you get crackin’.

Money raised will go towards “scholarships for Whidbey Island schools and special needs around the community.”

Jessica Caselden (left) returns as Coupeville High School Athletic Trainer, after the community raised $8,600 to fund her position. (Mandi Black photos)

It’s official-official.

After the community rallied to fund the position — raising $8,600 with a GoFundMe and car wash — Jessica Caselden returns as Coupeville High School Athletic Trainer.

Her rehiring, and approval of the district accepting the grant via a donation from the school’s booster club, were part of the consent agenda at Thursday’s school board meeting.

The vote was 5-0.

With Caselden set to work the sideline at Friday’s home football opener, a turbulent roller coaster ride reaches its final destination.

For a year, at least.

The athletic trainer position was slashed in the 2023-2024 budget crafted by Superintendent Steve King and Business Director Brian Gianello.

That budget, approved by the school board in a 4-1 vote after much back-and-forth, also cut the Dean of Students position held by 19-year vet Tom Black and reduced paraeducator positions and hours.

The public backlash was quick, loud, and consistent.

In Caselden’s case, a huge chunk of the blowback against the decision came from CHS athletes themselves, with Wolf softball players leading a pro-Jessica letter-writing campaign.

District officials later agreed to allow the public to fund the athletic trainer position, though not a specific employee.

Caselden’s direct supervisor, CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith — whose own duties were briefly on the chopping block before a reversal from King — was always clear he would retain the Wolf grad if that option was available.

Coupeville’s athletic future helps ensure its present success.

The GoFundMe brought in donations from 81 people, while the car wash, which was staffed by a large collection of young Wolf athletes, earned $1,300+ on its own.

Caselden, who also got married this summer, is a PE teacher and athletic trainer at the same high school where she once played softball and basketball.

A daughter of the prairie, back where she belongs.

Your donations can help Coupeville’s football coaches make key equipment purchases. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They score, you pay, everyone wins.

The Coupeville High School football team is launching the Touchdown Club, its new fundraising project.

You can make a flat donation to the program or pledge a dollar amount for each time a Wolf gridiron giant plunges into the end zone.

Proceeds will help football coaches make important purchases, a lot of which aren’t covered in the money alotted to each program by the Coupeville Booster Club.

“Our booster club does an amazing job,” said Wolf head football coach Bennett Richter, “But as a small school, we don’t have a football specific booster club and are making all these purchases ourselves.”

The biggest emphasis will be on new gear, such as shoulder pads, helmets, and the guardian caps Wolf players use in practice to reduce the potential for head injuries.

“We want to be able to continue to offer kids gear that helps them feel more comfortable in a physical sport and help parents feel comfortable about letting their kids play such a wonderful game,” Richter said.

Any dollar amount is welcome, but those who pledge $20 or more per touchdown will qualify as “Gold Members,” which brings with it big-time perks.

Hit that figure and you can advertise in the program at home games, as well as supply a sign which will be hung in the stadium and along the team’s practice field.

Players will also be signing game-worn jerseys as a personal thank you to “Gold Member” supporters.

For more info, email Bennett Richter at brichter@coupeville.k12.wa.us.
