Genna Wright

Genna Wright, surveying her kingdom.

They’re keeping the family business strong.

Ethan Marx and Genna Wright, who celebrate a joint birthday today, are both the youngest in families with a strong Coupeville athletic tradition.

Marx, who just days ago delivered a three-run double to propel the Wolf baseball squad to its first league title in 25 years, follows on the heels of older sister Haley, a star soccer and basketball player at CHS.

Wright is the latest in a long line of super-talented folks from her family, a diverse group that includes a host of older siblings and cousins.

She’s only a 7th grader, and is the youngest birthday celebrator we’ve featured in this series, but she’s already turning heads.

A fiery, fun-lovin’ competitor, no matter the sport (and she plays just about everything plus spends a considerable amount of time on the slopes), Genna takes most closely after older sister Sarah.

Both play at 120 MPH, crashing around and through teammates when necessary and are a lot of fun, on and off the court.

Marx may be a little quieter, but he’s just as dedicated, and, obviously, doesn’t shy away from the spotlight of the big stage.

As the duo hit their cake day, we just want to take a moment to wish them both happy birthday and all the best for their (very bright) futures.

You’re both legacies, and you’re upholding that legacy extremely well.

Good on you.

Chelsea Prescott (John Fisken photo)

From a thriller to a blow-out.

After opening its season with a win that wasn’t settled until the final play of the game, the Coupeville Middle School 7th grade girls’ basketball squad put game #2 away early.

Storming out to a 20-point lead at the half Monday, the Wolves rolled to a 42-12 thrashing of host Port Townsend to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Coupeville claimed a quick 12-4 lead after one quarter, then put the game away with a 14-2 surge in the second.

From there the Wolves pulled back on the reigns a bit and coasted in with 10-4 and 6-2 advantages over the final two quarters of play.

Chelsea Prescott sparked the CMS attack with a torrid 24, scorching the net in every quarter.

She opened with six, then dropped in eight in both the second and third quarters.

Genna Wright banked home six in support of Prescott, while Mollie Bailey knocked down four.

Morgan Pease, Megan Thorn, Luci Coleburn and Seraina Weatherford each sank a bucket to round out the Wolf scoring attack.

And so it begins.

The next wave of Coupeville girls hoops stars laid claim to the courts Monday with the start of a new season of middle school basketball.

A mix of established veterans like Maya Toomey-Stout, Melia Welling and Scout Smith, mixed in with young guns like Chelsea Prescott, Genna Wright and the heir to the Photo Bomb Queen throne, Mollie Bailey, are hard at work under the watchful eyes of coaches Bob Martin and Ryan King.

Their first game is Thursday, Feb. 18, when they host Chimacum (3:15 tip).

That kicks off a 10-game schedule in which the Wolves are home every Thursday and on the road every Monday.

Chelsea

Maya

Prescott will join grizzled vets like 8th grader Maya Toomey-Stout.

There are some new spikers in town.

High school volleyball has already been going for a bit, but Coupeville Middle School officially kicks off a new season Thursday, when the Wolves play host to Chimacum at 3:30 PM.

CMS has 26 players on its roster currently, with an almost perfect mix of eighth graders and seventh graders.

Among the names to watch, returning stars like Scout Smith, Zoe Trujillo and Maya Toomey-Stout.

And, while I don’t have much of a feel for what the Wolf seventh graders have to offer yet, two names pop out.

Genna Wright is the final child from a family of top-drawer athletes, following in the footsteps of older siblings Aaron and Sarah, while Chelsea Prescott has already made a name for herself as a little league baseball pitcher.

The rosters, as they stand now:

8th grade:

Ashleigh Battaglia
Luci Coleburn
Hannah Davidson
Natalie Hollrigel
Emma Mathusek
Jillian Mayne
