Coupeville Middle/High School will be without an assistant principal for several months as Leonard Edlund takes a medical leave.

Edlund has been employed by the Coupeville School District since 2021.

Before that he was a principal in Arizona and an assistant principal in Tacoma.

In his absence, school administrators will shuffle duties and welcome back 19-year vet Tom Black, whose Dean of Students position was cut when the 2023-2024 budget was approved.

Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King released the following statement Friday afternoon:

Late last week we learned that our MSHS Assistant Principal will be out on medical leave and will not be returning until at least January of 2024.

While I received permission from Mr. Edlund to share that he is on medical leave I ask that we respect his privacy during this time.

Please join me in hoping that he makes a healthy return to work.

Since we learned this unexpected news late last week, we have been working on how to continue the duties typically assigned to our Assistant Principal.

I want to thank union leadership and our administrators for their quick assistance.

Here is an outline of our plans:

To address daily supervision and assist with discipline issues, Mr. (Tom) Black will be returning on a part time basis as our temporary Dean of Students.

We are thankful that Mr. Black is able to return and believe that this will be well received by our school community.

In order to have our Career and Technical Education (CTE) program continue to have leadership, our former Coupeville teacher, Susan Haldezos-Galligan, formerly Johnson, will become our Interim CTE Director for the duration of the 2023-2024 school year.

We are thankful for her willingness to help us in this area and we are fortunate to have someone of her caliber to lead our program.

Mr. (Geoff) Kappes will need additional support with teacher evaluations so we are restoring Allyson Cundiff’s contract days that were reduced since last year so she can do the evaluations of some of our secondary teachers.

Mr. Kappes and Mrs. Cundiff will be announcing teacher evaluator assignments in the days ahead.

We are thankful that Allyson is willing to take on this additional work.

If we have any changes to these plans, we will let you know.

It’s the big walk, before the final walk.

A day before they graduate, Coupeville High School Class of 2023 members will wind their way down S. Main St., traveling from the high school commons to the town’s elementary school.

The trek is set to go down at 9 AM Friday, June 9 and CHS Principal Geoff Kappes welcomes the idea of the community coming out in support of its graduates.

“We are thrilled to extend a heartfelt invitation to each and every one of you to join us,” he said.

“The Senior Walk promises to be a vibrant and joyous occasion, filled with pride and admiration for the remarkable Class of ’23.”

Soon-to-be grads will be rockin’ their caps and gowns, as many of them return to the school where it all started for them.

“At Coupeville Elementary, our extraordinary graduates will walk through the cherished halls where their educational journey began, symbolizing the growth and success they have achieved throughout the years,” Kappes said.

“This is a remarkable opportunity to share in the pride and joy radiating from each of them.”

They’re outta here, virtually.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic having shut down schools, everyone had to get a little creative this spring with celebrations.

Thursday, Coupeville Middle School posted the video seen below, which honors the 8th graders who will, in some way, move up to high school in the fall.

Geoff Kappes

Coupeville High School does not plan to hire a replacement for Principal Duane Baumann when he departs at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Instead, the plan is to promote Geoff Kappes, the Coupeville Middle School Principal, and have him cover both jobs, being responsible for grades 6-12.

That move was announced Monday night by Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King during an online school board meeting.

King said he will seek official school board approval at the board’s May 25 meeting.

As the district considers staffing cuts across the board, the decision to have Kappes inherit Baumann’s duties allows Coupeville to “reduce (administration) by attrition.”

“Mr. Kappes is an outstanding principal and he’s done a fantastic job at the middle school,” King said during the meeting. “He has a real heart for helping students as they transition from middle school all the way to graduation.”

While there will be one principal for two schools (which share a campus), the plan is to maintain each school’s distinct identities, while the two staffs work together.

“I want to thank Mr. Kappes for him being willing to take on that challenge,” King said.

This is the second go-round for Kappes in the Coupeville school district.

He was a teacher and girls basketball coach at CHS from 2004-2007, then returned in 2017 to become the CMS Principal.

Baumann, who had a 10-year run as an administrator in Coupeville, was an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director before becoming CHS Principal in 2016.

He announced his resignation in November, with plans for a family move to Port Orchard.
