All things must end

It’s a wrap.

The postseason continues to play out, but the final North Sound Conference regular-season title was decided last week, as softball came to a hotly-contested end.

When the dust had settled, and the last home run had cleared the fence, Granite Falls managed to blow what seemed like a pretty solid lead, with back-to-back losses throwing things asunder.

The Tigers ended up in a three-way tie with Coupeville and Cedar Park Christian, and, thanks to the magic of the tiebreaker, it’s your Wolves who will carry a #1 seed into the district playoffs.

That royal rumble goes down in Sedro-Woolley May 16 and 18, while back on Whidbey, CHS track hosts bi-districts the same days.

The other Wolves still fighting are Tia Wurzainer and Avalon Renninger, who finished second at the league tourney, and open bi-districts Tuesday. Win there and the duo return to the courts May 17.

While Coupeville baseball and boys soccer reached the end of their roads this past week, being bounced from bi-district and district tournaments, respectively, there is some consolation.

Mainly that South Whidbey also went down in both sports, falling shy of a state berth.

That had to particularly sting for the Falcon booters, who at 13-1, were shocked in back-to-back one-goal games by King’s and The Bush School.

But we’re not here to gloat at our closest rival’s misfortune (well, maybe a little bit…), but instead to close our weekly Sunday recaps of the league standings.

If you deeply care about the continued adventures of Cedar Park Christian baseball and King’s soccer, there are other media outlets sure to track their progress as they play at state.

With the remaining active Coupeville athletes, only softball will see its win/loss record change after this, and you can catch those developments in the coming game stories.

No need for rackets

Well, at least they got to skip some school.

Coupeville High School netters Avalon Renninger and Tia Wurzrainer went back to Granite Falls Wednesday for day two of the North Sound Conference tennis tournament, but never had to play.

The Wolf duo, after going 2-1 Tuesday, had already clinched a spot at bi-districts, but didn’t know if they would go as the #2 or #3 seed from District 1.

Turns out they will be #2, and all without lifting a racket this afternoon.

Wurzrainer and Renninger waited as four other teams battled Wednesday, and when the last team standing was Ainsley Nelson and Farris Jokinen of South Whidbey, Coupeville got a walk-over win in the 2nd/3rd place match.

That was because the Wolves top doubles duo beat the #2 Falcon team Tuesday, claiming a 6-0, 7-6(7-2) win.

Coupeville would have only had to play Wednesday if King’s #2 team or Granite Falls #1 duo had emerged victorious from the four-team rumble.

Renninger and Wurzrainer open bi-districts Tuesday, May 14 at the Overlake School in Redmond, facing the #3 team from District 2’s Emerald City League in a loser’s out match.

Nelson and Jokinen face the Emerald City League’s #2 team the same day at the same location.

If either or both Whidbey teams survive, they advance to the semifinals May 17 at the Redmond Tennis Club.

Wurzrainer and Renninger would face the Emerald City League’s #1 team, while Nelson and Jokinen would run up against their own teammates, as Falcons Allison Papritz and Mary Zisette are the #1 seed from the North Sound Conference.

Two teams advance to state.

Amanda Thomas made her high school softball debut for the Coupeville JV team this spring.

Though just a freshman, Abby Mulholland made an immediate impact as a hard-hitting netter.

Ashley Menges is there for the assist, helping volleyball teammate Lucy Sandahl land a Prom date with Daniel Olson.

Seth Weatherford stretches out, lunging for home in a late-season game.

Annika Heller was one of three foreign exchange students to join the CHS tennis team.

There’s no real flow to this story.

Probably because it really isn’t a story at all, just a collection of spring sports photos I haven’t used, but need to get out to the public at some point.

Hopping nilly-willy between tennis, baseball, and softball, with some fan pics sprinkled over the top, it’s light, glossy, and makes for fast “reading.”

Perfect for a Wednesday.

Two Wolf netters still standing

Six went off to districts, and two survive.

Coupeville High School juniors Tia Wurzrainer and Avalon Renninger survived day one of the North Sound Conference tennis tournament, and have punched a ticket to next week’s bi-district tourney.

The duo return to Granite Falls Wednesday, but don’t know if they’ll actually play another match at the league tourney.

Three doubles tandems (out of a field of 10) advance to bi-districts, and Mary Zisette and Allison Papritz of South Whidbey are through.

The Falcon duo, who finished 2nd at the state tourney last year, claimed the #1 seed by knocking off Wurzrainer and Renninger in the tourney championship match.

There are four teams vying to face Coupeville’s duo in the 2nd/3rd place match.

But, if either King’s #1 team or South Whidbey’s #2 squad gets there, the Wolves get a walk-over win, as they have already played, and beaten, those duos.

If it’s King’s #2 team or Granite Falls #1 duo, Wurzrainer and Renninger return to the court to play one final league tourney match.

Either way, the Wolf duo and coach Ken Stange head to the Overlake School in Redmond May 14 to play a loser-out bi-district match against a team from the Emerald City League.

Survive that and they go to the Redmond Tennis Club May 17 for the semifinals (and hopefully) final, with the top two teams at bi-districts moving on to state.

While Wurzrainer and Renninger play on, their teammates have reached the end of their seasons.

Singles players Genna Wright and Jillian Mayne and doubles duo Eryn Wood and Emily Fiedler had differing levels of success at the league tourney, but all failed to advance.

In a rare occurrence, though, Coupeville had no seniors in the postseason, and can return all six netters who stepped onto the court at the league tourney.

Always keep one eye on the standings

Playoff fever rages across the land.

Four of five spring sports – baseball, boys soccer, girls tennis, and track – are actively involved in postseason action, while softball is the lone activity still wrapping up regular-season play.

For Coupeville, the season came to an end Saturday night for the diamond men and the booters, as both were knocked out of their respective playoff rumbles.

Track is off to districts at Lynden Christian this coming Thursday and Saturday, with bi-districts and state still to come.

Wolf tennis hits the district tourney Tuesday and Wednesday in Granite Falls, with two singles players and two doubles teams vying to advance to bi-districts.

And softball, coming off a huge week which included an upset of Granite Falls, wraps its regular season Tuesday at South Whidbey.

Win that one, and the Wolves clinch at least a share of the league title, then get some time to rest as their district tourney doesn’t go down until May 16 and 18.

As we juggle regular season and playoff activity, and try to figure out how the softball league title battle will be decided (more on that in a separate story later today), a look at league standings through May 5:
