They played from dawn to dusk.

Or at least it probably felt that way, as the Coupeville High School girls tennis team wrapped the regular season Thursday with a match-and-a-half in Granite Falls.

First, the two teams finished up a varsity match suspended by rain in mid-April, before playing a complete varsity and JV rumble.

Granite eked out the slimmest of wins in both varsity bouts, claiming 3-2 victories to sweep the doubleheader.

The losses drop Coupeville to 2-6 in North Sound Conference play, 2-7 overall.

The Wolves finish in fourth-place in the team standings, trailing King’s (7-1), South Whidbey (7-1), and Granite (4-4), but staying ahead of Friday Harbor (0-8).

Now, the focus turns to the postseason, and a return trip to Granite May 7-8 for the district tourney.

Each league school will send two singles players and two doubles teams to the modified double-elimination event.

Genna Wright and Jillian Mayne are locked in for singles, while the doubles duo of Tia Wurzrainer and Avalon Renninger enter the tourney as the #2 seed, behind just South Whidbey’s Allison Papritz and Mary Zisette.

The Falcon duo finished 2nd at state a season ago, falling in the title match.

Coupeville’s second doubles team will be decided Friday, when Emily Fiedler and Eryn Wood face off with Jaimee Masters and Abby Mulholland in a challenge match on the CHS courts.

The Cowboys got a bit of revenge.

A year ago, almost to the day, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team nipped Chimacum 4-3 in the regular season finale, clinching a fourth-straight 1A Olympic League title.

Jump forward to Wednesday, and this time it was the Cowboys who prevailed 4-3, albeit it in a clash with a lot smaller stakes.

With Coupeville now in the North Sound Conference, the trip to Chimacum was the one, and only, non-conference match on the schedule this season.

Now 2-5, the Wolves travel to Granite Falls Thursday, where they’ll play a match-and-a-half against the Tigers.

The two teams need to finish a match postponed by rain, before playing their season finale.

After that, both schools will join South Whidbey, Friday Harbor, and King’s at the district tourney May 7-8.

Complete Wednesday results:

Eryn Wood patiently awaits a chance to annihilate the tennis ball.

Tia Wurzrainer stretches out for a shot.

Bruna Moratori fires up a serve.

Her name is Avalon Renninger, and beatin’ the crud out of the tennis ball is her game.

Playing far from her native Brazil, Moratori found a second family in Coupeville.

One final time.

The Coupeville High School net crew played its final home match Tuesday, so ever-busy photo bug John Fisken shot through town for a few minutes to snap photos, before hurtling off to Oak Harbor for multiple other shoots.

The pics seen above capture a mix of on and off court action, including the Senior Night celebration for Bruna Moratori.

Two titles won, two to go.

The battle for regular-season North Sound Conference pennants came to an end in baseball and boys soccer this past week, with Cedar Park Christian and South Whidbey triumphing, respectively.

That leaves girls tennis and softball still in the middle of heated battles, as the teams involved have a chunk of the regular season left to play.

The week ahead (Apr. 29-May 4) is a busy one for Coupeville High School, with a heady mix of regular and postseason play on tap.

Three of five Wolf programs are all about the playoffs as we head for the start of May.

Soccer hosts Cedar Park Christian Monday in a loser-out district game. Win and the Wolves play again May 1 and 4, both on the road, as they try to qualify for bi-districts.

Track heads to Granite Falls May 2 for the league championships. After that comes districts, bi-districts, and state in the weeks ahead.

Baseball gets to rest a bit, then heads to Sehome High School May 4 for the start of the bi-district tourney. The Wolves play twice Saturday, and need at least one win to keep their season alive.

Meanwhile, softball and girls tennis still have a chunk of the regular season to finish.

The netters are set to play four matches next week, starting with the home finale Apr. 30 against Friday Harbor.

After a road trip to Chimacum for a non-conference match-up May 1, the Wolves have a doubleheader May 2 at Granite.

Or, more like a match-and-a-half, as they need to finish an earlier tussle halted by rain, then play the regularly-scheduled finale.

Softball faces its biggest week yet, with four games in five days, and a title on the line.

Monday, the Wolves travel to Bothell to face Cedar Park Christian, then it’s home to rumble with Granite May 1 and for a Senior Night double-header May 3 with Sultan.

Coupeville has one more regular-season game the following week, a short trip to Langley to play South Whidbey, but league title hopes will be decided this coming week.

The Wolves sit right behind Granite in the standings, and absolutely have to topple the Tigers, or pray for a ginormous miracle from other teams, if they want to hang a banner for a second-straight season.

As we await the nail-biting, legacy-defining week on its way, a look at league standings through Apr. 28:

North Sound Conference softball:

School League Overall
Granite Falls 7-1 10-5
Coupeville 5-2 8-6

Emily Fiedler and her doubles partner, Eryn Wood, teamed up to notch their first win of the season Friday afternoon. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

It was a very good day.

Less than 24 hours after being swept by South Whidbey, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team rebounded with a vengeance Friday afternoon.

With eight different Wolves winning for the first time this season, CHS swept host Friday Harbor 5-0 in varsity play, then fought to a 3-3 tie in JV action.

The varsity win lifts Coupeville to 1-4 on the season, and it bodes well for the Wolves starting a winning streak.

Friday Harbor travels to Whidbey Apr. 30 for a rematch, and, unless something radically changes, back-to-back team wins seems pretty likely.

Varsity singles players Genna Wright and Jillian Mayne, and first-year doubles duo Eryn Wood and Emily Fielder all tasted victory for the first time, as did JV doubles players Cassidy Holmes, Cecelia Camarena, Bruna Moratori, and Lola Jimenez.
