In a year of upheaval, one tradition remains untouched.

The Coupeville High School Class of 2021 took to the streets of Cow Town Thursday for the annual Senior parade.

Wanderin’ photo whiz kid John Fisken was on hand to snap images as the Wolves moved one step closer to graduation.

Can’t tell the graduates without a scorecard.

So here you go, ready to be laminated — the Coupeville High School Class of 2021.

Every name matters, but one stands above them all for me.

Aria Bowen is the final reminder of my 12-year run behind the counter at Videoville from 1994-2006.

The same counter where a lil’ Aria took naps in her carrier while I jabbered about movies, her older sister Mekare built modern art sculptures back at the block table, and their mom, Dea, served up Miriam’s Espresso drinks.

So she gets three photos and a lot of the rest of you grads-to-be maybe don’t get one in this story.

You’ll survive, and still graduate.

Then you can go build a time machine, travel back to when Videoville rented 500 VHS tapes on a Friday night in Cow Town, and plop your own baby tush on our counter.

And, having bent time and space, you can act all surprised when, magically, it’s suddenly you getting three photos in a 2021 graduation story.

Simple really.

CHS graduation goes outdoors

The way it always should have been.

If there’s one positive from the current pandemic, it’s this — Coupeville High School is adapting by moving its graduation outdoors.

Instead of jamming people into a sweltering gym in early summer, the ceremony for the Class of 2021 will take place at the stadium over at Mickey Clark Field.

And if you don’t know, the stadium and field sit behind Coupeville Elementary School at 6 S. Main Street.

CHS students returning to in-person education

Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King

Things are chugging along on schedule.

Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King announced Wednesday that the district plans to bring back its high school students to a hybrid in-person learning model beginning Monday, March 15.

That decision covers grade 9-12 and will give all Coupeville students a chance to resume some form of education back inside school buildings.

CHS students follow on the heels of kindergarteners and special needs students, who returned in mid-January.

The Coupeville Elementary School followed in February, and middle school students begin March 8.

Parents are allowed to choose that their students remain in online schooling this school year, however, and it’s been reported that 30% of CMS students will go that route.

Under the hybrid plan, which was approved 4-1 by the Coupeville School Board, middle and high school students, who share a campus, will have distance learning from 8-10:30 AM.

Two days a week, half of each school’s student body will attend the school from 11:30-2, where they will remain in the same classroom with the same teacher.

Decisions to resume in-person schooling have come after frequent consultation with the Island County Public Health Department.

As students return, work continues, King said in his statement.

The district is waiting for guidance from state officials before planning the 2021 CHS graduation.

A reunion, and a farewell

Kept apart for months, back together for a moment (or two).

With the world in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, the Coupeville High School Class of 2020 missed out on spending time together this spring.

But the Wolf grads came back together one final time Monday night, courtesy of the Blue Fox Drive-In.

While that event was just for seniors and their parents, now everyone can see the videos they watched together in their reunion and farewell.
