Maggie Crimmins

Maggie Crimmins, owner of a truly beautiful soul. (John Fisken photos)

There is a special light which shines out of some people.

Maggie Crimmins is one of those people.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who hits the big 1-6 today, is an athlete, yes, and a veteran of many sports — basketball, track, volleyball, tennis.

But if we took all the athletic stuff away and just looked at Maggie the person, she would still tower over the world.

Since her early days, she has possessed a sweetness of nature, a warm personality and a genuine kindness to her soul, that few others have.

It helps that she comes from good stock — parents Jon and Jodi are the gold standard — and her large, extended family (including highly-entertaining, underwear Twinkie-eating older brother Aiden) doesn’t have a rotten apple in the bunch.

I’ve known Maggie since back in the olden days, when both her mom and aunt Shawn worked at Videoville and Miriam’s Espresso, and she has never changed.

At least not at her core.

I get the whole point about how she’s aging. I understand how a calendar works…

But, at her core, Maggie is the same now at 16 as when she was three.

And I’m pretty sure she’ll still be as kind and caring and brilliant as she moves through more birthdays.

Some people have to work at being good people. Others just have a beautiful soul from day one, and Miss Crimmins is one of the latter.

As she celebrates her cake day today, on the last day of Spring Break, we want to wish her (and her family) all the best.

Happy birthday, Maggie! May it shine as brightly as you do every day.

Awwwwwwww...

Awwwwwwww…

Today, if you haven’t heard, is national Sylvia Hurlburt day.

The Coupeville High School senior, a whirlwind of positivity and wonderment (and athletic skill and sunny snarkiness, too!), is celebrating her cake day, having hit the big 1-8 on her journey towards graduation.

As she celebrates her latest milestone, we present a few hundred photos to mark the occasion.

OK, 23 photos, if you’re counting, but that’s still the most I’ve run for anyone’s birthday. So, that’s something.

I also got one of Sylvia’s closest friends, fellow CHS cheer captain Jovanah Foote, to say a few words about Miss Hurlburt.

So, let’s turn the stage over to her.

Sylvia is one of my oldest friends and she is spectacular.

She cheers, she dances, and she’s a crazy athlete.

She is a bundle of joy and love mixed with a little sass and I absolutely love it.

I’ve known her since I was very little and it’s insane that we’re both already 18 and graduating.

I have so many great memories with her, starting from preschool all the way up to our final year of high school, and I absolutely cherish all of them.

Cheering with her all these years has been so fun and great!

I have enjoyed being by her side, her partner in crime.

I can’t wait for many more memories in our lives because we will forever be best friends.

I love you and I hope your 18th birthday is insanely FABULOUS!

Friends forever.

Katherine Morales is a bright, shining light in Coupeville.

The Wolf freshman, who celebrates a birthday today, was a vital part of the CHS cheer squad this year, and her sunny personality has won her fans near and far.

As she enjoys her cake day, we have two guest columnists, fellow Wolf athletes Kalia Littlejohn and Tomi Herrera, who swung by to weigh in on their friend.

First up is Kalia:

Katherine and I became friends in the fifth grade when Katherine, Tomi, and I all started to hang out after school at my mom’s office across the road from the elementary school.

Then our friendship grew through middle school and now high school.

She’s one of my best friends, she’s very reliable and fun to be around.

Katherine is always up to have a good time.

She makes everyone around her smile.

And then we have Tomi:

Katherine is a nice and caring person; she loves adventure and having fun; she’s always up for new things; she’s a great friend; she finds the best in everything and everyone; she’s a really funny person and always makes you laugh.

She’s always there for you no matter what and is the best partner in crime you could ask for.

She’ll always be there no matter what; she’s a free spirit who loves doing her own thing but takes other people into consideration all the time.

She’s good at whatever she tries to do and sets a goal for herself.

She’s brave and enthusiastic.

Happy birthday, Miss Morales. From all of us.

Sarah Wright (John Fisken photo)

Sarah Wright has had hair-raising athletic success as just a freshman. (John Fisken photos)

sarah

A vital part of the Wolves on and off the court.

The birthday girl and the prairie.

The birthday girl and her prairie.

Sarah Wright has been a star since day one.

No, not day one of her freshman year at Coupeville High School.

Day one, as in Apr. 5, 2001, the day Miss Wright popped into the world.

I wasn’t there, but I’m pretty sure she came out already talking, clapping and bellowing “Let’s get this goin’, ladies!!”

Sarah is a natural leader, not just because she can kick your butt at most of her sports, but because she has an air about her.

A mix of confidence, steel-jawed courage and love and respect for her teammates, I have yet to see her take the field (or the court) with anything less than a look that says “We are gonna kick some fanny today!!”

As personable, friendly and entertaining as anyone currently repping the red and black in Cow Town, Sarah is a three-sport standout.

Volleyball, basketball (where she made her varsity debut in a state playoff game and promptly ripped down a rebound 1.3 seconds into her floor time) and, now, her calling card to glory — softball.

The Wolf diamond women are off to a 6-1 start, the best the program has achieved in a decade, and much of the credit goes to Wright.

Her ferocious hitting, where she has laid claim to the cleanup spot once owned by highly-decorated slugger Hailey Hammer, is a key.

So is her base-running, where she shows off her smarts, and her work behind the plate.

As the new Wolf catcher, everything flows through her, and a river of confidence flows out from her to all her teammates.

Down by five runs on the road at Concrete with six outs standing between the Wolves and defeat?

Wright would not let her team fall, storming up and down the dugout, telling her fellow players this, right now, was when they would rally.

And, of course, they did, roaring back to not only tie, but win by five, leaving a giddy Wright reason to grab any teammate she could get her hands on and deliver a huge hug.

It’s that mix of natural athletic ability — she is one more link in a large, extended family of highly-accomplished athletes — leadership and ability to inspire those around her that mark Sarah as one of the most promising young Wolves.

By the time graduation rolls around in 2019, she will likely have a pile of awards and letters at her feet, and I fully expect by the time she is done at CHS her face will grace the gym hallway as an Athlete of the Year.

Of course, whichever way her sports career goes, one thing will always be true — Sarah is a truly wonderful person first and foremost.

To know her is to think the world of her, cause frankly, if you don’t like her, there’s probably something deeply wrong with you.

As she celebrates her cake day today, the sunny face of a new generation of Wolf student/athletes, all of her fans (and there’s a lot of them) want to wish her a happy birthday.

Keep being you, Sarah! Cause it’s working out pretty dang well.

Teo Keilwitz (John Fisken photo)

Teo

Keilwitz saw some varsity action on both sides of the ball during his rookie season.

He’s a star on the rise.

Having made the jump to high school sports this year, Wolf freshman Teo Keilwitz is already starting to make a name for himself.

After playing football in the fall, where he saw some varsity action on both sides of the ball and was a leader for the JV, he’s currently running the pitch with the CHS booters.

A midfielder for the Wolves, he’ll see action today on his birthday when Coupeville hosts Forks in non-conference games (12:30 varsity/2:30 JV).

Of course, Keilwitz is not just an athlete, also bringing big brain power to his role on the school’s always-electrifying Science Olympiad team as well.

A strong mix of book smarts and athletic skills, he seems to have an especially bright future ahead of him.

As he continues to become a vital part of Wolf Nation, we want to take a quick moment to say happy birthday to Teo.

May your day, and the years to come, both at CHS and beyond, be blessed, Mr. Keilwitz.
