The multi-talented Lauren Grove

The multi-talented Lauren Grove

She is kinda like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Put Lauren Grove in a Wolf uniform — be it volleyball, basketball or track — and the CHS sophomore has a motor that rarely, if ever, stops running.

She swarms on defense, she attacks on offense, she sacrifices her body for the good of her team and is always among the first to fly into a huddle, encouraging and congratulating those around her.

Lauren leads by example on the playing surface, and that example is one of a sometimes wild woman. In the best way possible.

Yet get her off the court, where she is quick to slap on the jammies, jump in the stands and dote upon her younger siblings and she presents another face — that of the sweet-natured, deeply-caring big sis.

And it is that mix that makes her one of the most vibrant young sports stars in Cow Town.

A genuinely friendly, smart, outgoing young woman, Lauren shines in the heat of athletic play and away from it.

She may not be the tallest or the fastest (though she is pretty quick) but she takes a backseat to no one when it comes to heart and hustle.

As she celebrates her big day, our best wishes to one of our best.

You make more than just your mom proud every time you shine, Lauren.

Makin' it rain.

Makin’ it rain.

Quiet class.

That’s the first two words that come to mind when you talk about Matt Shank.

The Coupeville High School senior, who hits a birthday today, came to Cow Town before the start of his junior year and made an immediate impact.

Not by screaming and hollering and making a commotion, but by going out and busting his rear in every sport he has played, whether it be football, basketball or track and field.

The six-foot-three tower of power has been a positive influence, a strong contributor and a first class guy every step of the way.

When he and his family were on their way from Juab, Utah — his dad, Dr. Jim Shank, had been hired as the new Superintendent for Coupeville Schools — I talked by email to Matt’s former basketball coach.

“You are getting a great family in your town,” Jake Downard said then. “Matt is a great kid, sad to see him go.

“He is a big kid with lots of potential. He was a good defender and rebounder and was well liked by his teammates and by his peers at the school.”

In our brief talk, it was obvious Downward thought a lot of Shank as a player, but much more as a person.

And, in his time in the red and black, he has more than lived up to his former coach’s feelings.

The hiring of Dr. Shank was a masterstroke for Coupeville.

A man who exudes the same quiet class as his many children (others still at home include sophomore Brian and 8th grader Ashlie), he has been the best hire this school district has made in decades.

Under his leadership, you can feel the positivity grow each day.

It will always be a battle to get everything done and make everyone happy, especially when numbers are down, but the universal feeling I get from every teacher and coach who speak about Dr. Shank is how appreciative they are of his level of commitment.

Watching him from a distance, in the way he interacts with each and every person who approaches him with the same welcoming, calm style, I have been greatly impressed.

And that carries down to his children.

Which is not to say Matt is a saint. Who knows? Maybe he’s a holy terror at home.

What I have to go on is what I see and hear and that all says one, never-tarnished truth: what you see with the Shanks is what you get.

I see the way Matt conducts himself, in wins or losses, and I see consistency.

I see the way Matt interacts with his teammates, friends and fans, and I see consistency.

I see a classy guy who is a talented athlete, but will leave behind a mark on Coupeville for much more than merely scoring a few baskets or blocking a field goal (which was still pretty awesome).

Happy birthday, Mr. Shank. You deserve any and all applause.

Abraham Leyva (John Fisken photos)

Runnin' and gunnin'.

Runnin’ and gunnin’.

I have been ferociously sick for several days, so this is gonna be quick.

You caught me out of bed for a sec, and I just noticed one of Coupeville High School’s most dynamic young stars has a birthday today.

Abraham Leyva torched the net during last year’s boys’ soccer season, teaming with running mate Zane Bundy to give the Wolves one of the more dangerous goal-scoring combos in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

Now, as the duo prepare for the move into a new challenge — the 1A Olympic League — I’m thinking things like league titles and MVP awards.

To which I say, make it so.

And then I say, I’m going back to bed.

But first, a very big HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mr. Leyva! May all your goals come true in this next year.

Cheridan Eck

Cheridan Eck

Cheer for Cheridan, cause she’d cheer for you.

Today marks the birthday of one of the peppiest people on the face of the Earth, CHS cheer coach Cheridan Eck.

A former Seattle Sonics dancer who has brought her love of dance to the high school athletic scene, she is one of the brightest, most personable people you’ll ever meet.

Whether working with her high school girls or teaching cheer to future generations of Wolves when the elementary school kids get their taste of pom poms and routines each season, she is the Energizer Rabbit come to life.

And, even when you think she’s standing still for a moment, she’s not.

During performances she silently mimics every move and cheer, pulling them off (of course) flawlessly.

After 20 years of the original Energizer Rabbit, legendary CHS cheer coach Sylvia Arnold, anyone following in her footsteps would have a tough job.

From all signs, it appears Cheridan is pulling it off the same way she does everything — with grace, good cheer, boundless energy and a willingness to outwork and out-hustle at all times.

Coupeville is lucky to have her, our very own bright shining star lighting up the universe around her every step of the way.

Happy birthday, Cheridan.

Happy birthday, Bessie!!

Happy birthday, Bessie!!

Bessie Walstad was the gold standard.

From the first moments of her freshman year to the last days of her senior seasons, she was as fine of an athlete, and a person, as Coupeville High School has been graced to have in recent memory.

A star, and better yet, a true leader who reached out to all of her teammates, top to bottom, Bessie’s impact went far beyond mere stats.

Though she had those, too.

As she anchored Wolf volleyball, basketball and softball teams, Bessie was almost always at the top of what ever chart you wanted to keep.

She has a chunk of trophies, letters, awards and All-Conference honors and deserves them.

Competing for Coupeville at somewhat of a tough time, as the Wolves tried to survive against rivals with much bigger student bodies and scholarship-bestowing private schools in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference, Walstad never backed down.

She came out swinging, always, and played hard from the opening tip to the final strike.

And she did it always with a huge smile on her face. She wasn’t playing because she had to, but because she wanted to.

Bessie, who celebrates her 20th birthday today, is now at George Fox University, on to new adventures and new successes.

But what she did for four years in the red and black can not be minimized.

She is that shining example that young athletes coming up should look to emulate.

Walstad never skipped a season, never skipped a sport. She played to win, every time, but handled wins and losses with the same grace. She was a leader, a true teammate.

Bessie took her four years at CHS and got as much out of them as she possibly could. She will be able to look back at her high school athletic days and have few, if any regrets.

I have covered sports on Whidbey Island for 24 years and she would be on the short list of the best student/athletes I have ever covered. For her athletic accomplishments, yes, but also for the person she was, and is.

Happy birthday, Bessie, and thank you.
