Mattea Miller (John Fisken photo)

Mattea Miller: Serene Superstar. (John Fisken photo)

Mattea Miller is serenity and strength intertwined in one remarkable young woman.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has been one of the best athletes we’ve been blessed to have in our town for the past four years.

Pick a sport, any sport, and Mattea can make a sizable impact, from soccer to basketball to track and field, and everything in between.

She is a hustler, a hard worker, a tenacious, never-say-die coach’s dream.

A deeply-committed, tremendously-supportive, rock-solid anchor for any squad, an ideal teammate.

Of both those things, there is no doubt.

But Mattea has always been about far more than just sports, and to talk about her as only an athlete would do her a great disservice.

Good athletes come and go, and we appreciate what they accomplish.

But, every so often, there is a true rarity such as Miss Miller, someone who in their own quiet way soars far above the crowd.

I can honestly say, in four years of high school sports, and middle school before that, I have never heard a single disparaging word said about her.

Which is rare in the hot house world of constantly roiling teen drama that is prep sports, where even the most likable person usually manages to tick off someone from time to time.

Idiots like myself, well, we’re just lucky not to have fans throw wadded-up hot dog wrappers at us some days…

Not Mattea, who always seems genuinely kind and caring to all around her (or hides her true serial killer nature really, really, extremely well.)

My impression of her has always been that this is a young woman who seems to always look for the good in others and is repaid in kind.

Or, at least I hope she is repaid.

I hope those around her realize what a wonderful human being she seems to be every day, and show her some appreciation.

Mattea is a superb athlete, talent mixed with drive, but she is a far better person, a brilliant, compassionate, strong young woman with a soaring soul, and that is so much more important.

On her cake day, the last one of her high school days, I hope she is surrounded by family and friends, and I hope she realizes how much her town and her fans think of her.

It has been an honor to write about you, Mattea, and I have no doubt there will be many more stories to tell as you head out to captivate the outside world.

Whatever you do, wherever you go after high school, there’s a whole new group of people about to discover what Coupeville already knows — you are the very definition of awesome.

Birthdays, as far as the eye can see.

There’s so many possible candles on so many possible cakes today, the entirety of Whidbey Island could be a fire hazard.

The never-ending alerts on Facebook (I got it the first seven times your algorithms harassed me, Zuckerberg!) for Sept. 25 stretch out across 237 pages.

Or at least it feels that way.

Anyway, we’re here to narrow it down to the triplets, three current Wolf stars who all hit their cake day today.

Without further ado, we want to send birthday wishes out to Ethan Spark, Emma Smith and Mikayla Elfrank, who between them have a presence on what could be eight (or more) CHS sports squads.

First up (by random coin flip) is Spark, a high-octane, high-scoring soccer (and sometimes basketball and tennis) ace who inherited his dynamic kicking leg from older sister Jenn.

The rest of his talent and charisma? On loan from God.

Spark can crack a soccer ball half the length of a field, bend it like Beckham and drop it into the goal as sweetly as anyone in the biz.

With the graduation of school career scoring leader Abraham Leyva, Spark will be the leading returning goal scorer this spring, having scorched the nets for eight goals last season.

That being said, my favorite moment of his came when he was playing hoops a year or two back and wrecked a Port Townsend player so completely, the RedHawk wiped out the entire Wolf bench.

Spark, who was on a tear in the game — which Coupeville won — spun viciously to the hoop for a key basket, losing his defender in the process.

Unable to slow his roll, the RedHawk went face-first, at full speed, into the Wolf water-dispensing machine, carrying it into the stands with him as chairs (and players) went flying like bowling pins.

By the time the hapless hoopster had come to a halt, most of the CHS bench was destroyed, paper cups were blowing in the breeze, and water covered half the gym.

Spark?

He knocked down the shot, then stood off to the side, eyeing the carnage with a small smile. Like a boss.

Our second birthday buddy, Smith, often wrecks people as well, but she does it by elevating to the gym ceiling and lashing spikes that cause volleyball foes to run away screaming.

A power hitter who always makes her feats of spiker destruction look elegant, Emma is also a track star on the rise, throwing the shot put and discus for the Wolves.

One of the best in the game at delivering pre-game photo ops to wandering paparazzi, Smith, who comes from a long line of Wolf greats (including grandpa Steve and aunt Joli, to name but two) was born to be a star, and she embraces her heritage.

Whether dropping on-court dance moves with her pack (volleyball and real-life buddies Maddy Hilkey and Ashley Menges) or gracing the school’s honor roll on a regular basis, Emma is as impressive as they come.

Giving her a run for her money is Elfrank, who has been a Wolf for the shortest time of the birthday trio, but has already made a huge impact.

South Whidbey’s loss has been Coupeville’s gain, as we inherited a three-sport supernova who combines boundless talent with impeccable class.

Mikayla made her debut in red and black as a softball player last spring, and has now taken her spot on the volleyball court as a junior.

Still to come — a stint as a basketball player, which bodes extremely well for a Wolf program seeking its third-straight league title.

Elfrank has raw talent for days, which makes her capable of gunning down runners with laser throws from the hole at short or tattooing folks with high-flying spikes.

But what makes her the complete deal is the joy she takes in competing, the way she meshes with her teammates, and the class she shows off the field of battle.

This trio, all of whom have several more seasons to ply their trade for CHS, are winners, both in the games they play as Wolves and in the game of life.

Sept. 25 produced a bevy of talented student/athletes, and our town hit the jackpot with these three.

So happy birthday, Ethan, Emma and Mikayla, and thank you.

Birthday girl BayLee Dunsmore (left), seen here at a basketball game with Madison Aylesworth. (John Fisken photo)

BayLee Dunsmore is the real star.

She is the true power behind the throne, an indispensable manager who keeps several Coupeville High School athletic teams on course, and seems to do it all quite effortlessly.

Whether it’s football or basketball season, Dunsmore is the go-to person for anything and everything you need, whether as a player, coach or blogger.

Especially as a blogger.

I don’t know how many times she has gone above and beyond her normal duties to track down basketball score-books, snap pics and send them my way when the Wolves are deep on the road.

She is my lifeline, ignoring her own needs to text from buses bouncing through a dark night just so I can have all my info fresh and hot.

Like I said, BayLee is indispensable.

She’s also an extremely bright young woman, an honor roll regular, a hard worker and one of the nicest people you could possible imagine.

While the athletes tend to get a lot of the spotlight, nothing works properly without unsung stars like Dunsmore.

As she celebrates her cake day today, we just want to take a moment to say thank you (for everything you do and for being generally awesome in the first place) and wish BayLee the best of birthdays.

May your special day rock as much as you do, Miss Dunsmore.

Stacie

Farm Dog

Farm Dog being Farm Dog.

Today is a terrible day and a beautiful day, entwined together.

It is both the day Stacie Farmer entered the world and the day her body could no longer keep her here.

A life spirit like no other, a young woman who generated nothing but good will wherever she went, from her days at Coupeville High School and far beyond, Farm Dog will always be with us.

She was born Sept. 15, 1986, Brian and Cathi Farmer’s third child, joining David and Lisa.

Stacie passed from the physical world six years ago, on her birthday, unable to recover from injuries suffered when she was hit by a car while on a bicycle.

In the 24 years between those two birthdays, she was a genuine rarity, a young woman who crossed all lines and boundaries and found friends in every nook and cranny.

Whether she was patrolling the softball field for the Wolves, hanging out with her pack at Miriam’s Espresso and Videoville, or carving out new paths in far-flung locales after graduation, there was always an adventure to be embraced.

As the years pass, it is vitally important we all, here in Coupeville and in the many other communities she spent time in, never forget her soaring spirit.

The way she welcomed life in every day.

In simple gestures and big moments alike, she left a little bit of Farm Dog in the soul of everyone she met along her journey.

In her latter years, she was fond of the saying “bhavuta sabba mangalam,” which translates to “may all beings be happy.”

Whether you knew her intimately or were never blessed with a chance to meet her, open your heart and listen to Stacie’s words.

Embrace them, act on them.

That way Farm Dog lives forever, a part of all of us.

Birthday duo Maya and Sean Toomey-Stout. (John Fisken photos)

Birthday duo Maya and Sean Toomey-Stout. (John Fisken photos)

They are the titanic twosome, the dazzling duo, the Wonder Twins, The Gazelle and The Torpedo.

When Maya and Sean Toomey-Stout popped into the world 15 years ago today, they heralded a new age in Wolf sports, even if no one realized it at the time.

It’s all paying off now, here in the present, as the Coupeville High School freshmen continue to impact virtually every sports team in town, something they first started doing back in their middle school days.

Where to begin with this duo, who are following in the electric, well-dressed footsteps of older brother Cameron?

Whatever we say, we need to do it quickly, as Maya and Sean are all about the speed.

Hence the nicknames (whether they want them or not).

Maya (aka The Gazelle) stealing second base on a softball diamond is a no-brainer, as she accelerates so quickly she’s generally wiping infield dirt off her pants before the rival catcher even comes up out of her crouch.

Sean (aka The Torpedo) flies down the football field like a mad man unleashed when playing on special teams, exploding into the returner’s chest a nanosecond after they’ve hauled in the kick.

Where some runners always look they’re straining, the Toomey-Stout twins generally look like they’re gliding, slicing by Flash-style while everyone else is caught in a vat of molasses.

And it’s not just speed for them.

Pick a sport and they are naturals, whether it be volleyball, basketball, softball, football, track or anything else you might be interested in having your rear tattooed in today.

Of course, sports are but a small (but important) part of their family’s lives.

Moms Lisa Toomey and Beth Stout have raised three hyper-intelligent, extremely friendly children who bring hard work, dedication and humility to everything they do.

They are the poster children for a family doing things the right way, and it’s a treat to have the Toomey-Stout clan reside in our town.

So happy birthday, twins, and get ready, because I’m going to spend the next four years gushing about you to the world.
