The breeze just made them run faster.

Staying one step ahead of the cool air coming off the water at Fort Casey State Park Thursday, Coupeville Middle School cross country runners held up well in their lone home meet of the season.

The Wolves welcomed six other Cascade League schools to Whidbey, then presented them with an enticing 1.7-mile course.

South Whidbey claimed the girls’ team title, while King’s captured the boys’ crown. Coupeville finished third in both competitions.

Aleya Lewis of Lakewood and Ash Kline of South Whidbey earned individual honors, with the Wolves placing Henry Purdue and Cyrus Sparacio in the top 10.

CMS coach Amber Wyman sent 26 runners to the line Thursday and came away impressed with her young athletes.

“It was a beautiful day, and the runners really pushed hard!” she said.

“We had some tough competition, but I am so proud of all of my runners for how hard they work at practice and all the effort they give.

“It is really paying off!”

The Wolves get right back at it this Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to University Place to take part in the 28th annual John Payne Cross Country Invitational.

These are the days Elizabeth Bitting loves.

The Coupeville High School cross country coach was front and center at Fort Casey State Park Wednesday, as the Wolves hosted their lone home meet of the season.

And Bitting was stoked.

“It was a beautiful day!” she said. “So many spectators, so many cow bells ringing, a lot of hoarse voices, PR’s galore!”

Craig Pedlar, who coached CHS cross country in the ’70s, was the official starter, and seemingly the whole community came out in force to support the harriers.

“We had so many wonderful volunteers!” Bitting said.

“Thank you to all who came out on this glorious day and cheered on ALL THE runners! I LOVE THAT!”

Parents, school admins and teachers, middle school runners and the CHS cheerleaders were on hand to help keep things hopping.

“Today was seriously our biggest turnout yet!” Bitting said. “We had some big names out there! So many family members and friends.

“We definitely were feeling the love today!”

On the 5000-meter course, the Wolves won the girls’ team title, with their 42 points edging out Friday Harbor (46) and Mount Vernon Christian (47).

The CHS boys (32) claimed second, trailing just perpetual state power MVC (23), with Hurricanes Evangeline Fikkert and Isaac Betz earning individual crowns.

Coupeville placed four boys and three girls in the top 10, with junior Aleera Kent and sophomore Kenneth Jacobsen leading the way with fourth-place finishes.

The Wolves get back at it a week from today, Oct. 9, when they travel to Friday Harbor for another league meet.

The juniors had a bang-up day on Senior Night.

The Class of 2025 accounted for seven wins Wednesday, as the Wolf track and field stars defended their home turf at the Coupeville Classic Invite.

Overall, CHS won 13 events, including sweeping both boys relay races.

The combination of individual success and strong depth carried the Wolves to convincing team title wins, as well.

The CHS girls racked up 184 points, while their male counterparts amassed 166.5, putting both squads well ahead of runner-up East Jefferson in both battles.

Lynden, Clallam Bay, Crescent, and Friday Harbor rounded out the field Wednesday, with the Wolves piling up 63 PRs.

“The number of high fives we were giving today, they racked up some PRs,” said Wolf coach Bob Martin. “They were kicking ass today!”

Juniors Lyla Stuurmans (400, 800, Long Jump) and Katie Marti (Shot Put, Javelin) led the way as multiple event winners, while senior Nick Guay captured the high jump title and ran a leg on both triumphant relay units.

Other Wolf individual winners included Reese Wilkinson (Discus), Carly Burt (Pole Vault), Mikey Robinett (100 Hurdles), Carson Field (800), and Zac Tackett (Discus).

“It was an AMAZING DAY!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“So proud of all our athletes! Those wins and PRs were BEAUTIFUL!!! ALL so very well deserved!!”

The sun was out, seniors were honored, quality chili was eaten, top times were recorded, and, in a significant side moment, local bus drivers helped keep things hopping.

East Jefferson, which is a unified program that Port Townsend and Chimacum created after Coupeville left the Olympic League, had ferry reservation issues which left their bus on the mainland.

Their athletes could have been stranded at the Coupeville dock — miles from town — but Island Transit agreed to swoop in and pick them up and transport them to the CHS oval in time for the meet.

“Island Transit went above and beyond!” Bitting said.

As did Wolf moms, especially Courtney Pilgrim.

“She steps up, when everyone else steps back,” Martin said.

“She and the parents provide quite the spread for our coaches and volunteers. Five hours of go, they need to be refueled.”

Welcoming six other schools to Cow Town Wednesday, the Coupeville High School track and field team put on a show, picking up eight wins and 55 PR’s.

That carried the Wolves to a pair of team titles, as well, with the boys rolling and the girls pulling out a thriller.

Coupeville’s male athletes finished with 144.6 points, well ahead of runner-up Mount Vernon Christian, which tallied 117.5.

La Conner (115.2) closed out the top three, with Orcas Island, Friday Harbor, Lopez Island, and Concrete rounding out the remainder of the team title chase.

On the girls’ side of things, individual wins from Reese Wilkinson (Discus), Lyla Stuurmans (1600), and Carly Burt (Pole Vault) propelled the Wolves to a 137-135 win over MVC.

La Conner tallied 127 points, with Lopez, Friday Harbor, and Orcas well back.

Reese Wilkinson lets it rip in the discus, an event she won.

Coupeville senior Nick Guay paced the boys’ squad, winning the high jump and running a leg on triumphant 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay units.

Other winners included Carson Field (3200) and Cael Wilson (Pole Vault).

Preston Epp joined Guay in running on both victorious relay teams, with Hank Milnes, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Wilson, and Marquette Cunningham each appearing once.

While the Wolves excelled in the spotlight, CHS coach Bob Martin also paid tribute to the many people who stepped up to help the school pull off a successful home meet.

“The day was not solely about the athletes competing on the track today,” he said. “It was equally about the volunteers from our community and the competing teams who came together; we were impressed!”

Keeping an eagle eye on things.

Martin also praised athletes and coaches from Coupeville’s rival schools.

“The day presented its fair share of challenges,” he said.

“Despite encountering some delays due to technical issues with our camera system, we were impressed by the patience and support demonstrated by the teams in attendance.”

Coupeville’s younger athletes will get back at it this Saturday, Mar. 23, when they compete at the Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

The full Wolf roster returns to action Mar. 28 with a Northwest 2B/1B League meet in Mount Vernon.

The rain stayed away, but the top times flowed down.

Putting three runners in the top seven Wednesday, the Coupeville High School boys’ cross country team defended its home turf at Fort Casey State Park, winning a six-team home meet.

Meanwhile, the Wolf girls, paced by another stellar performance from Noelle Western, pushed Mount Vernon Christian hard, with only nine points separating the two teams in the final tally.

Led by individual champ Evangeline Fikkert, the Hurricane girls finished with 23 points to Coupeville’s 32.

Noelle Western cruises to a 5th place finish.

On the boy’s side of things, the Wolves edged MVC 39-55, though the ‘Canes did have an individual winner in Isaac Betz.

Friday Harbor (73), Orcas Island (86), and Evangel Classical (98) rounded out the team standings.

Lummi Nation also sent runners but didn’t have a full squad.

All the Wolves come off the starting line at the same time.

Wednesday’s meet, the lone home event for Coupeville, played out on a redesigned course covering 5,000 meters.

With retired CHS track coach Randy King on hand to be the official race starter, things kicked off with a big rush, as the girls and boys competed at the same time.

With the weather cooperating, and Coupeville Middle School coach Amber Wyman stepping up to take the reins as race director, it made for a pleasant day all around.

“Great afternoon!!!,” said CHS harrier coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“So many compliments on the beautiful course, wonderful volunteers, shout out to the middle schoolers who stepped up and helped out. Can’t wait for them to run this course next season.”

Volunteers like Sherry Bonacci were invaluable to bringing off a successful meet.

With coaching duties calling to her, Bitting needed someone to run the race, and Wyman knocked it out of the park.

“This was very hard for me to do — give control of my baby to somebody else,” Bitting said with a laugh.

“But Amber is AMAZING and did GREAT!”

Coupeville returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 30, when it travels to the Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville for the 16th annual Twilight XC Invitational.
