Home turf, strong times

The Coupeville Middle School cross country team sent 21 runners to the line Thursday, as the Wolves hosted a six-team meet at Fort Casey State Park under sunny skies.

The Lakewood boys and South Whidbey girls claimed team titles, with CMS earning fourth and third, respectively.

Isaac Girma and Corinne Hudders, both 8th graders from King’s, finished atop the individual races, while Coupeville’s Mikayla Wagner and Isaiah Allen notched top 10 performances.

Overall, 138 runners enjoyed the scenic views of Central Whidbey during Coupeville’s only home meet of the season.

CHS cross country runners came out to help their younger counterparts, operating as race marshals and cleanup crew.

“They were such a big help,” said CMS coach Amber Wyman.

“It was a beautiful, sunny Whidbey day!” she added. “We received many compliments on the race and were told multiple times that this was a favorite for many.”

From the weather to the views, the race went off without a hitch.

Fast times and PR’s for many of the Wolves helped put a cherry on the top.

“The Coupeville athletes pushed themselves with several achieving their personal goals,” Wyman said.

“I could go on and on; these athletes impress me each week!”

The Wolves next chance to shine arrives Saturday, when they head off to Shoreline for the King’s Roller Coaster Run.

The weather was nice, the results nicer.

Coupeville Middle School track and field athletes took advantage of sunny skies and warm temps Wednesday, capturing 16 wins and 84 PR’s at the last home meet of the season.

The Wolves, who head to Sultan May 18, before competing in the Cascade League Championships the following week, faced off with next-door neighbor South Whidbey during Wednesday’s rumble.

The CMS boys won the 6th/7th grade battle, while the Falcons were victorious in 6th/7th girls, and both 8th grade battles.

Wolf 6th grader Tamsin Ward, continuing a torrid start to her school career, led the way with wins in the 100, shot put, and high jump.

That gives her eight victories across her first three middle school meets.

CMS 7th graders Nick Laska (Shot Put, Discus), Beckett Green (100, 200), and Shiloh Sandlin (800, Long Jump) were double winners, while Kayla Crane (800) was the lone Wolf 8th grader to nab a title.

Other Coupeville winners included 7th graders Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), Mikayla Wagner (1600), Arianna Cunningham (Discus), and Nathan Niewald (400), as well as two relay squads.

The girls 4 x 200 unit was comprised of 6th graders Hyley Farrell, Sage Stavros, Kennedy O’Neill, and Elizabeth Marshall, with the boys 4 x 1 crew featuring Laska, Niewald, Roger Merino-Martinez, and Green.

The strong performances from everyone on the roster left coaches Jon Gabelein and Amber Wyman pleased.

“The athletes seemed to prefer the warm and dry environment today after surviving last week’s cold and wet adventure,” Gabelein said.

“The improvements shown allowed a lot of them to walk away feeling proud of new PR’s instead of just sunburn.”

Wyman, who also “appreciated the warm dry weather!” praised her young athletes as well.

“Every week these athletes impress me with their hard work and dedication,” she said. “Today was no different!

“We had a few push through injuries to not let their team down,” Wyman added. “And so many that pushed themselves outside their comfort zone to try something new.

I’m so proud of this team!”

Dull weather, bright results

Tamsin Ward is not messing around.

The Coupeville Middle School 6th grader won three events Thursday in her home track and field debut, giving her five victories across her first two meets.

Ward romped to wins in the 100, shot put, and long jump, setting PR’s in the latter two of those events.

Facing off with South Whidbey and Lakewood, the Wolves won 10 events and set 86 PR’s on a cold, wet “spring” afternoon.

Joining Ward on the victory stand was fellow 6th grader Hyley Farrell, who won the 200 and led off a victorious 4 x 200 relay unit.

That team also included 6th graders Kennedy O’Neill, Elizabeth Marshall, and Sage Stavros.

CMS 7th graders Lillian Ketterling (Discus), Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), Roger Merino-Martinez (Long Jump), and Nick Laska (Discus) came out on top as well, with Kayla Crane (1600) the lone Wolf 8th grader to win an event.

Coupeville’s 6th/7th grade girls won the team title, joining Lakewood (6th/7th boys) and South Whidbey (8th girls, 8th boys) as front-runners.

Pulling off a successful home meet, especially on a dank day, took the work of many, with high school coaches and athletes helping their middle school counterparts.

CHS alum Jaylen Nitta, who has worked with both the middle and high school teams, stepped in to be the starter, and kept everything moving smoothly.

The young Wolves return to action next Wednesday, May 10, when they host South Whidbey for the final home meet of the season.

CHS track adds home meet, Senior Night

The Coupeville High School track and field team is doing things a little differently this year.

With 26 seniors on the roster and a hole in the schedule, Wolf coaches have scrambled to add a home meet Wednesday, April 19.

The Coupeville Classic Invitational, set to kickoff at 3:00 PM, allows CHS to have a real Senior Night ceremony, which often doesn’t happen in the world of track.

It also keeps the Wolves active, as they were looking at a two-week gap between off-Island meets.
