Sometimes it’s just about survival.

Facing off with University Prep, arguably the premier boys tennis program in Washington state, Coupeville absorbed a beatin’ Friday afternoon.

The Wolves shuffled their lineup a bit to mix things up, but were still mauled 5-0 by the Pumas, who have won more state titles than there are stars in the sky.

As they navigate the choppy waters of the private school-dominated Emerald City League, the CHS netters are still staying afloat, with a solid 4-4 record on the season.

Coupeville gets right back at it next week, with a road trip Wednesday to face Bush, and then a rematch at home Friday against Overlake.

Cranking out the hits at Friday night’s game against Vashon.

It don’t mean a thing without that zing.

CHS music teacher Jamar Jenkins and the Wolf band bring an extra dimension to football games, making their section of the new grandstand rock from warm-ups to exit song.

There are 25 music lovers listed on the fall roster, though not all are actively playing during games, as a few band members double as football players or cheerleaders.

New year, new boss!!

This one has been a long time coming.

Ken Stange kicked off his 14th season as Coupeville High School boys tennis coach Wednesday, and then his players stormed the courts in Langley and accomplished something none of his previous teams had.

They beat South Whidbey.

For 14 seasons, whether they were league foes or non-conference rivals, the Falcon boy netters have owned the Wolves.

The CHS girls have beaten South Whidbey under Stange, but their male counterparts couldn’t say the same.

There have been close matches and blowouts, but never once had Coupeville come out on top. Until the magic happened on a sunny early September afternoon.

Sparked by a gutsy comeback win by senior Jakobi Baumann, the Wolves jumped back on the bus with a 3-2 win in a match that doubled as the season and league opener.

Out of six schools in the new North Sound Conference, only Coupeville and South Whidbey play boys tennis, so they’re competing in the ultra-elite Emerald City League this year.

While both might have issues dealing with the private school powerhouses awaiting them, like two-time defending state champ University Prep, for the moment, the Wolves sit atop the league standings.

To get there, CHS got big-time performances from singles aces Baumann and Drake Borden, and first-time doubles duo James Wood and Mason Grove.

“Jakobi was amazing today,” Stange said. “After losing a 5-2 lead in the first set, he persevered, outlasting Levi (Buck) in the second, and playing some of the most consistent tennis in the third.

“Mason and James winning in James’ first match was special and Drake drubbed his opponent.”

Sweet sounds of success for Wolf duo!!

   Jakobi Baumann matched her finish, winning as both an individual and as part of a duo.

Both Wolves advance to the state competition in late April.

The music is in them.

Coupeville High School seniors Allison Wenzel and Jakobi Baumann combined for three wins Saturday at a San Juan Music Educators Association competition in Bellingham, punching their tickets for state.

Wenzel, who was playing the day before her birthday, captured first in French Horn while playing the first movement of “Horn Concerto No. 2 for Horn and Orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.”

Baumann matched her, winning a title in Trombone while laying down the sweet sounds of the first movement of “Concertino by Ferdinand David.”

The duo also teamed up to triumph in Brass Ensemble, besting 18 other rivals.

Wenzel and Baumann tickled the ears of the judges with the first movement of “The First Sonata for Horn and Trombone by Jean Antoine Blanc.”

Both Wolves are standout students who also find time to compete in multiple sports.

Baumann is a top tennis player and distance runner for the CHS track team, while Wenzel is one season away from finishing off a perfect 12-for-12 run as a high school athlete.

She has competed in volleyball, basketball and track all four years.

The state music competition is Apr. 27-28 at Central Washington University.

Our science whiz kids are better than your science whiz kids.

Showcasing their brain power, Science Olympiad giants Jaschon Baumann and Harris Sinclair rolled to a win in “Game On” Saturday at the Curtis Invitational in University Place.

That event “determines a team’s ability to design and build an original computer game incorporating the theme and game type provided to them by the supervisor using the program ‘Scratch’.”

Powered by the title, Coupeville High School placed eighth in the team competition, a jump up from 13th at its last event, and a strong showing as one of the smallest schools in attendance.

Hovercraft (8th) — Keilwitz and Robinson

Experimental Design (9th) — Nelson, Hassapis and Drake Borden

Coupeville’s next competition will be Regionals Feb. 24 at the University of Washington.
