The Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball squads are the last teams still playing hoops in town, and they hit the midway point of their season Thursday.

As the Wolves faced off with visiting Sequim, travelin’ photo man John Fisken surprised everyone by popping into the gym to document the goings on.

The most successful Wolf girls' hoops squad in a decade.

The most successful Wolf girls’ hoops squad in a decade.

They were a surprise team.

Having lost six key players to graduation, no one quite knew what to expect from this year’s CHS girls’ hoops squad.

But they jelled, and they jelled quickly, the younger players embracing their roles, while senior Makana Stone nailed down what will undoubtedly be her second straight 1A Olympic League MVP award.

The Wolf varsity has yet to lose in league play, now a flawless 18-0 over two seasons, and this year’s team, which went 16-6 overall, advanced to state.

A loss to Cashmere Saturday knocked them out, but it was the furthest the Coupeville girls had gone in a decade.

As they played their final game of the season, wanderin’ photo man John Fisken fired off the cameras and collected some more pics of the most photo-friendly team in the land.

Kailey

This is the look of a young woman delivering one of the most intense performances I have seen in 25 years of high school games. Kailey Kellner, you were a beast, and it was beautiful.

"Dang, Kellner,

Ema Smith: “Someone call the medics, cause my baby girl just straight-up killed some folks!!”

"No, ma'am!!"

“No, ma’am!!” Makana Stone does NOT lose opening tips. Ever.

Winner! Winner! Dairy Queen dinner!!

Winner! Winner! Dairy Queen dinner!!

They played their best in the spotlight.

Facing off with Seattle Christian Friday in Sumner, with a trip to the regional round of state on the line, the Wolf girls were at the peak of their powers.

They played as a team, they attacked relentlessly and, when the buzzer sounded on their 49-33 win, they celebrated in style.

Taking a detour from the state wrestling tourney, travelin’ photo man John Fisken popped in and grabbed some great pics as it all unfolded.

The photos above are courtesy him.

Lhamon

Catherine Lhamon spins into action.

Morgan Pease

Morgan Pease (left), who was a savage on defense, ripping down rebounds and rejecting shots, goes to the floor to deny Chimacum.

Morgan Pease is gonna hurt folks.

And I mean that in the best way possible.

The Coupeville Middle School 7th grader was maybe the brightest star Thursday, as the Wolves opened their new season.

Ripping down rebounds, slamming Chimacum shots into the stands, Pease revived memories of CHS defensive legend Lexie Black, who still holds state tournament records a decade after graduation.

Take Pease, toss in quicksilver, sweet-shooting Chelsea Prescott, relentless ball-hawk Avalon Renninger and feisty floor leaders like Scout Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout and the future is a bright one for Wolf girls basketball.

On hand to catch opening night action was travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Now back from pulling extensive duty at the state wrestling tourney in Tacoma, he delivers the photos above.

Ty Eck (left)

Risen Johnson

One last rebound for Risen Johnson, who has provided non-stop thrills for Wolf fans the last two seasons.

The road came to an end Thursday for eight Wolves.

A playoff loss to visiting Bellevue Christian sent a senior-heavy Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad to the exit.

But not before they provided travelin’ photo man John Fisken one more chance to capture some snappy pics of them in action.

The photos above, a mix of on and off court action, are courtesy him.
